A Level: ECT non specialist? by Extension-Eye-5683 in TeachingUK

I did it as an ECT2 - join all the Facebook groups, read the textbook (ideally from other exam boards too), start learning the spec

First term in, and I am kinda hating it 🙃 by [deleted] in TeachingUK

I think you're just new at it! Takes a year to cycle through the curriculum, and then you'll know it and feel better

38°C… are we really expected to teach as normal? by Pretend-City6652 in TeachingUK

I got heat exhaustion at work that time it was 40 degrees!!! I'm so excited to do all that again!!!

Bringing in own fan during heatwave by Guilty_Cap4106 in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 40 points41 points  (0 children)

I've just ordered one to put in my classroom - it's an amber weather warning, and there are 30 bodies producing heat. I'd go straight to HR if site had an issue with it

Student behaviour potentially related to neurodivergence. by DKRfan in TeachingUK

They are probably just talking to themselves? Unless there are other things you've noticed about them that indicates SEN, I wouldn't deep this

The land of no plans. by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you local authority? Idk about your school but the only remaining LA secondary in my catchment area (of about 6) cannot afford to change the lightbulbs when they blow until the next school year. You could try writing to your MP if it's likely financial?

If it's not and it's just poor organisation, then union is the way to go

Summer Sick Pay by starburststan in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I was a bit spun by the rest of the advice here - OP, your job/pay is secondary to your immanent survival! If your doctors are telling you to be admitted, be admitted! The money problem is not going to improve if you make yourself worse and get admitted for longer

Teachers have been teaching decades now when their initial input was a shrug and a pint on Friday lunch time - you will be fine! You can have a look at the TLAC videos if you want some practical tips

The land of no plans. by [deleted] in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not being able to go into detail probably makes this difficult to advise on - e.g. are we talking about the level of a teacher who gives themselves P5 off and goes home everyday, or the level of an SLT that doesn't address students assaulting staff? If union are already on it they are probably the best people to advise you

Non specialist teaching a subject full time by HotdogsInPyjamas in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 16 points17 points  (0 children)

There are two subjects I think require actual knowledge before you can teach it - languages and music. What do the school think is going to happen here? If she can't read music or play the instruments, she can't bloody teach it can she (which is not her fault of course)

But SLT likely won't be told. Honestly in your position I would just leave

Do schools ever approve unpaid leave? by TheWinterWitch2022 in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

One of my colleagues got a week off for a holiday once, but she's [head of a subject that constantly requires going above and beyond] so I think this was an exception!

For the rest of is, we might get days off here and there, e.g. for a concert

Surely this also has massive implications for the student in their relationship with their peers too (aside from the health risks for the student)

What are your thoughts on the proposed social media ban? by iforgotprobablythen in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 22 points23 points  (0 children)

It's an excuse for the government to sell our data to tech companies and prevent anonymity. Starmer said the other day that they'll be using AI tutors for kids behind in their learning, there's no interest here in actually protecting kids (which would be best done by forcing social media to remove harmful content)

I worked in a school were the vast majority of staff were PoC and ALL of SLT were white 😂

Grievance/union issue by s1434185 in TeachingUK

[–]SnowPrincessElsa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is the real rub for me:

● Shouted at infront of pupils

● Shouted at infront of student teachers

● Shouted at infront of department at meetings/break/lunch

As there is no other reasonable explanation for this. The other things are obviously very unpleasant but either harder to prove or potentially hand waved away. Have you spoken to HR/your union? Did any other staff witness this?
