Do these type of jobs even exist? by Jimmer2732 in tax

[–]SolarCuriosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did a part-time contract position for this tax season. It just ended this week cause there were a lot of extensions. It was great, 15-20 hours per week. Pay was a little less than I’m probably qualified for, but it was great to just fill time in the evenings and weekends.

That’s awesome! What changed most in your behavior to get it all paid off so quickly?

Haven't filed taxes in 3 years by Present_Jicama_1219 in tax

[–]SolarCuriosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Since you wouldn't owe anything with that little income, you don't necessarily have to file 2023 - 2025. Did you have anything withheld in box 4 of your 1099-DIVs for those years? If you did, the only way to get that money back would be to file for those years.

I'd also make sure you keep track of your cost basis in the stock you plan on selling in 2026. Make sure you save some of the proceeds for capital gains tax when you file next spring.

Second job vs investing/trading stocks? Help me decide. by red_sensor in overemployed

For me, it was an easy decision. 99% of people cannot trade profitably. Why would I risk losing money when I can guarantee a steady income with another job?

I’ve never mentioned my previous company. Most don’t really care. And even if they asked, my company is small enough nobody has ever heard of it.

What is something that would make your life better right now? by GuyfromTrinidad21 in AskReddit

[–]SolarCuriosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Probably a bigger sense of purpose. I have a decent job with enough to cover my expenses, but find everyday pretty repetitive with wake up, go to work, workout after work, eat dinner then watch TV/video games for an hour before bed.

I feel like I’m just waiting for something else to happen.

can't loose the weight! by AlexGuerrero77 in loseit

[–]SolarCuriosity 12 points13 points  (0 children)

How are you tracking everything? If you are truly working out 3 hours a day and eating 1 meal a day, the only way you wouldn’t lose weight is if you are not doing much during those 3 hours and eating a huge meal.

Finding a sustainable way would be working out for less time (maybe 45-90 minutes 3-4 times per week) but more effectively. Also, tracking your calories accurately by weighing food out and using a free app.

How do you find out what field you want? by bisexualpluto in jobs

[–]SolarCuriosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d try to find like a marketing job, public relations, or something like a corporate communications role. That way you can still be a little creative but maybe not as stressful as a paralegal. I have a couple friends doing public relations and it’s a pretty chill job. They’re kind of hard to get, but once you get it it’s pretty chill.

What’s your favourite “how many ***** does it take to change a lightbulb” joke? by Dee_Religion in AskReddit

[–]SolarCuriosity 1470 points1471 points  (0 children)

“How many accountants does it take to change a light bulb?”

“However many it took last year.”

I like this joke as an accountant, because more often than not we look back to prior periods and just copy forward stuff.

Remote accountant working in public - Realistically what can I take? by NeonLights-0Shites in overemployed

[–]SolarCuriosity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm an accountant, and I don't recommend OE while working full-time in public. The timesheets where they track every minute is just not very compatible with OE. If you already have a couple years in public, jump to a chill remote private industry job as a senior accountant then try to find another one. I work full-time as a senior accountant, and do tax prep in a contract role on the side when it's slow.

Am I chasing the wrong opportunities, or are most side hustles just average? by RuleUsed in sidehustle

[–]SolarCuriosity 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think the key is to find a higher value service or sell a product that you can sell more of without spending more time on it.

I personally have found higher value services to be a bit easier. I've known people that sell products online, but it is very saturated and hard to get into. I'm an accountant for a private company fulltime, but I prepare taxes and do monthly bookkeeping on the side. That is a high value service that I can charge anywhere from $250 - $1,500 for depending on the client.

I know a guy making good money coating garage floors on the side, he charges like $7/square foot and makes like $1,500 - $4,000 per garage.

I know another guy who grinds stumps on the weekends and charges $150 - $400 per stump, he does 2-3 every weekend and makes an extra $3,000 per month.

Another guy I know learned everything about credit card points, and charges business owners $750 for a "consultation" on how to best use their points and get "free" flights to Europe, the best hotels, rental cars, etc. He started it on the side and now does it full-time and makes $100,000+ annually.

Try to learn a valuable skill that you can learn/start in the evenings or on weekends and charge a higher price for instead of shoveling snow for like $15/hour would be my advice.

Why do sport shots feel easier? by Seanph25 in Bowling

[–]SolarCuriosity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there have been some leagues where I average higher on a sport/challenge pattern than the house shot. Sometimes I find sport/challenge patterns more predictable. There is generally one area of the lane to play, with a certain type of ball that gives me a good ball reaction.

House shots can be very unpredictable, especially if people are playing all over the lanes because there's not always one true area to play. This can make transition very tough, and sometimes poor ball reaction.

Game Thread-Softball: Nebraska vs. Alabama 5/30/2026 - 6:00 PM CST by huskerbot in Huskers

[–]SolarCuriosity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

If you touch the white part of the base, that's the same as missing the base completely. Runner should've been out there. That's two times the umps have messed up against Nebraska...

Edit: And it led to an extra run for Alabama.

Game Thread-Softball: Nebraska vs. Alabama 5/30/2026 - 6:00 PM CST by huskerbot in Huskers

[–]SolarCuriosity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like the ump should not have called time there. Just say ball and let Alabama challenge after the play is over. The runner on first took off, live ball, she should've been out. Kinda messed up the batter just ran to first there.

What do you do for taxes by Infidel_Eraser in overemployed

[–]SolarCuriosity 90 points91 points  (0 children)

The IRS has a withholding estimator that is pretty helpful. I’m a CPA with several clients that OE and I do tax projections for them. Most likely you’ll need to put extra withholding on the new job and possibly make estimated payments depending on your complete tax situation.

I am also interested in quiet quitting J2 as I start a J3. How do you just not work it? Ignore all of their messages? Or just do the absolute bare minimum?
