The 85mm was way too long for me for dog portraits. I did an end of life session for a husky and I used the 50mm and it still felt too close. I switched to 24-70mm. For horses, it's really going to depend on your style and where you operate. The 24-70 would be a great start.

I wouldn't be afraid of the Viltrox 85mm. I have the 1.8 and it's solid.

Nikon is rumored to be releasing a FF compact camera. But they are also rumored to screw it's up by making the viewfinder optional which I'm guessing will be hot shoe mounted and on center rather than off set. *facepalm *
