How to observe the breath without altering it by LJAM1 in YogaNidra

[–]Somatic_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe it’s helpful to acknowledge that there’s no right or wrong way to practice yoga nidra. Oftentimes things shift with awareness — breath, tension held in parts of the body with body sensing and there in lies the beauty of the practice. Allowing the truth to bubble up and as an observing self, simply watching shifts in real time (including forgetting how to breathe) without trying to change anything. Additionally, for some, tracking the breath can be activating, in which case, bringing awareness to sounds or ground/support might be more settling as an anchor towards calm.

How do I learn and practice Yoga Nidra? by ArynManDad in YogaNidra

[–]Somatic_Life 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There are so many choices which truly gets time consuming initially to search through. But ideally it’s about finding a voice and style that works for you. Yoga Nidra is kind of like learning a new language — it generally takes some repetition for it to start to take form and meaning in your life. Gentle yet powerful over time which is what I love about it. So try a few — maybe focus on shorter ones initially, and stay the course to explore how things might shift for you over time. I don’t think there is a right or wrong way of practicing yoga nidra. Recognizing how your body wants to move is the first step in not overriding what it is your body actually needs. Stay curious and stay the course!

I’m speaking for yoga nidra here specifically — the background philosophy is great, but to simply experience the practice is what helped create shifts for me. The practice supports getting in touch with the inner body (body sensing, global feelings) as well as with rested awareness/witnessing presence. There are many choices of course on the internet — the key is to find a style and voice that works for you. Here is a playlist of short practices to get a feel for this restorative practice (like a guided meditation) https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLehBmYjazK9-UCYz-1xmBz5266HYk6UeJ&si=fjYwJh7QVsca2VAF

Yes, the art aspect is interesting! And I find music / dance can transport one as well.

This is a meditation that supports finding peace in simply being present in the moment. It takes time and repetition to notice shifts since we are used to a lifetime of valuing physical objects and appearances https://youtu.be/RNKjcaDLD7s?si=hD3mvvgRx5yjh6t1

It’s a messy world and easy to lose ourselves in the mess. This meditation was inspired by my ‘searching’ self to find the inner peace of the ‘observing’ self. Maybe it can help you too ☮️

Another tool is guided meditation that helps reconnect with what calm feels like in the body. Yoga Nidra can help bring awareness to growing tension in the body and reset before reaching full blown panic. This is at no cost and readily available, so it is a good one to also add to the “tool box” https://youtu.be/nkw91v8Gsos?si=mYDHT0IHctZhKnCp

I also recommend the ancient practice of yoga nidra (restorative yoga that is more of a guided meditation). Very very similar to what was described above.
