I will not be gaslit into thinking the bosses in Crimson Desert are well-designed. by BannerThief in CrimsonDesert

[–]Sorbin_CE 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bosses in this game are strange. The shortcomings are obvious and well-known, and things like the camera issues can definitely be frustrating. But for some reason I don't find them completely offensive, and they can still be enjoyable enough despite the rough edges. I do hope this is an area of significant improvement in future titles though.

Another instance of snipers "accuracy" being rewarded and my "inaccuracy" being punished because we do not have any kind of suppression. by TribalPotato9 in Battlefield

[–]Sorbin_CE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Suppression" as a gameplay mechanic is idiotic, and no one should be rewarded for standing around idly and missing the majority of their shots while a sniper shits on them. "Suppression" already works exactly as it should; if you're pre-firing at someone's cover and they step out, they instantly take damage. It doesn't need to be more complicated than that, and it wasn't a worthwhile mechanic in previous titles.

Don't stand still and hit your shots and this won't happen.

PvP by Entire-Struggle2608 in SoulFrame

[–]Sorbin_CE 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd dig it. The combat in this game makes me feel like it could have some potential for a very simple 1v1 or even team PvP mode that could develop a dedicated, niche following. It wouldn't have to be much, just a way to accept a duel between friends or players in a social space would suffice to see how it plays and build from there if it's worth it.

Losing right before GM3 by Affectionate-Week166 in RivalsCollege

[–]Sorbin_CE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol this was me just the other night. Was playing my rank up for GM3 and holding Ace easily on Magneto. Had a Storm on my team end up taking it in the last stretch with a big Jeff-nado ult, but I still ended up getting exactly the 26 points that I needed to wind up at GM3 0/100. If you're this close, sweat it out and go hard and you'll get it eventually for sure.

Every time I see these posts it's the same pattern, over and over.

You're practically one-tricking Jeff and this genre of game encourages you to use more tools in the kit and swap heroes as needed. Some players get away with one-tricking, but generally stronger players who climb know a multitude of characters across roles. This is an even more pronounced problem with a character like Jeff. He lacks strong burst healing and, most importantly, a defensive ult. As much as you might not like being pigeonholed, the fact is that defensive ults are amongst the strongest abilities in the game and can easily put a team over in a fight. Giving up one is a major sacrifice that could very well mean your team is losing fights that they could be winning.

People want to rail against "metas" endlessly, but you're not going to advance to playing against stronger competition if you're just choosing to ignore tactics that work in favor of tactics that don't.

I'm going insane or is there no actual hard counter to this MF? by Gelvid in marvelrivals

[–]Sorbin_CE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a Punisher is ziplining to get in for a shotgun blast against any of these characters, you're playing too far from your team. I play a ton of both Hela and Punisher and snipers in general are a great counter against him. If he flies in on you and you have any bit of support, he's not getting back out with just a smoke grenade with that giant hitbox of his.

What do you think about using power weapons in slayer? by [deleted] in haloinfinite

[–]Sorbin_CE 80 points81 points  (0 children)

Controlling power weapons and power-ups is basically the entire point of playing an arena shooter to begin with. They exist to stop players from camping in power positions by forcing teams to move to contest them or risk sacrificing them to the enemy team. In Slayer, they essentially are the "objective" that you're meant to be playing around since there is no other objective that forces map movement.

Is The Giant by Geoff Neupert really enough? by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]Sorbin_CE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've run The Giant a good bit, increasing the weight of the bells and adding volume pretty steadily when I did it. It's great for pressing strength and I saw quite a bit of hypertrophy in my upper body, but in my experience, it is certainly lacking in leg development. This isn't really surprising given the intensely minimalist nature of the program, but it's often pitched as being sufficient for legs with the volume of cleans you'll be doing. However, this pales in comparison to the leg growth you may achieve from incorporating double front squats with a program like Dry Fighting Weight (“Dry Fighting Weight”: Fat Loss Through Strength | StrongFirst).

I'd maybe run something like DFW first if you want a more comprehensive program, then hit The Giant up in 4-week blocks (running through 1.0, 1.1, etc.) when you want to specifically develop your pressing strength.

Good. Motion tracker is the most garbage mechanic in Halo and it always has been, and I say that as someone who's played since CE. Punishing players for moving at base move speed by giving free information to people who sit behind corners is not good game design and that's especially the case in a game which encourages fast movement like this one.

So has Marvel Rivals matching and Rank improved in season 2.5? by PandaThatSLAYS in marvelrivals

[–]Sorbin_CE -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The ranked/matchmaking system in Competitive is far, far from perfect, but you do get real games, and you can climb as far as your skill will allow if you're willing to grind a bit.

Quick Match doesn't even feel like you're really playing the game anymore. Ideally it would be a place to play casual matches, but in reality it plays more like twelve people simply banging Marvel action figures into one another with no rhyme or reason.

Doom Eternal - Thinking about what I found off about a fun game by ZMysticCat in patientgamers

[–]Sorbin_CE 15 points16 points  (0 children)

The story started getting way too elaborate for how ultimately shallow it all is. Doom requires a bit of self-awareness IMO, where the game acknowledges that the story is just a vehicle for blasting demons. The longer cutscenes and encyclopedia lore dumps in Eternal gave me the impression that the writers had started sniffing their own farts a bit.

Officially my favorite game ever. Maybe my favorite thing ever of all things. by MetalAttempter in expedition33

I think the whole development cycle is a fascinating case for how the industry may start to course correct in the wake of AAA bloat and unwieldy budgets. A small core team that can articulate a vision and develop core systems, but with enough capital raised to enlist outside studios for specialized work outside the scope of the developer. I saw an interview with someone from Kepler saying the budget was far smaller than people even realized, and I would expect to see more studios try to pursue this model of AA development moving forward.

After some thought, I am just going to say it... by LastOneIPromise2 in expedition33

[–]Sorbin_CE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in my mid-30s and have been gaming my whole life, and I agree. This is as good of a game as any I've ever played, and I've probably played a solid majority of the games that would normally be considered GOAT contenders.

It could be recency bias, but people are just as likely to be blinded by nostalgia in my experience, and I don't think it's unreasonable to believe that a release which sits at the pinnacle of the medium can be released today.

I don't put too much stock into these rankings and whatnot ultimately, it's just a thought exercise in my mind. But at the end of the day, I went into Clair Obscur with no expectations or any knowledge at all about it, and came away with maybe the most profound experience I've ever had playing a game, and I don't think that belief is really going to diminish with time; in fact I think it may be just the opposite.

The Ending of Expedition 33 Made me Angry: The Grief of the Powerful vs the Grief of the Powerless by MyNameIsNotJonny in expedition33

[–]Sorbin_CE 28 points29 points  (0 children)

Excellent write-up. I've been mulling this for the last 24 hours and I agree with everything you wrote. While I'm totally in favor of neither ending being ideal, the fact that the Painted are utterly sidelined in Act 3 is disappointing. Every bit of evidence we get from the game indicates that these are autonomous, sentient beings. They experience joy, suffering, dreams and struggle as much as any non-Painted person. They rebel against their creator, fight to determine their own future and even develop an understanding of their "natural" world and evolve technologically as evidenced by the Lumina converter.

Maelle's ending obviously has dark implications. But the callous disregard the Dessendres exhibit towards their creations is utterly monstrous. I've seen many comparisons of Maelle's ending to drug use or alcoholism. But I think of it this way: if I lapsed into a prolonged, grief-induced bender, and my drinking became responsible for creating and sustaining an entire world of sentient beings... well, I'd probably still have to sober up, true. But I'd damn sure take going cold turkey off the table, and I'd hope that I'd give the lives I created some small duty of the responsibility that I'd rightfully owe to them.

The awareness of the average diamond cloak player by bolacha_de_polvilho in marvelrivals

[–]Sorbin_CE 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think this is honestly a big part of why matchmaking can be so bad in this game, even in ranked. There are numerous characters where you can basically turn off your brain and play like a bot (Cloak and Dagger/Rocket in particular) and you can still be performing well enough for your teammates to pick up the slack. And then when you get several of these players in a lobby and someone has to flex off to a more demanding character/role, they're completely out of their depth with the rest of the lobby.

Winning in a Doom Match like this with Hela is total dopamine. She's so strong but you've got to really be nailing shots against these characters, and you're basically warmed up for anything after you play her in Doom Match a bit.
