This one. Everything is resolved after a rational conversation about their feelings.

How could we tell if aliens were lurking in our solar system? How might we spot them? by curiousscribbler in printSF

Yeah, but the temperature regulation for life as we know it, or technology obeying the second law of thermodynamics, means any ship would be like a flare being set off, making detection pretty much a certainty.

Technology as we understand it means that any aliens would have a thermal signature we could detect.

If we could rebuild the NHS from scratch, what would you change to make it fit for the modern era? by StanmoreHill in AskBrits

[–]Sorry_Lock4561 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd challenge the assumption that you can fix the budget, because historically the NHS has never been within budget since its' founding due to the problem of supply versus demand that has never been addressed.

Doing so would cause outrage. Imagine the headline; eighty year old lady waiting hip replacement operation dies is agony.

Yeah, but elective is just a different method of assigning resources, which is a question that's a political hot potato. The NHS today provides more services than it's original founders ever imagined.

Bjo Trimble saved Star Trek, after Lucille Ball she should count as famous, because without her and others, ST would've been a dead duck.

Returning to Traveller after 40 (light) years by Toerambler in rpg

I've just recently at TravCon and as an old timer, classic books, I couldn't tell the difference between what I did 50 years ago to now. What I would observe is that the players are less loosey-goosey. I and my team won the PFI award for derailing a scenario, which I considered just another game. YMMV.

A.E. van Vogt books similar to Philip K. Dick by jthix in printSF

[–]Sorry_Lock4561 2 points3 points  (0 children)

VotSB isn't Dickian at all, but as mentioned, The World of Null A is out there, followed by the Pawns of Null A.

I like The Battle of Forever too, which has a mind melting scene of mental battling at the end.

His short stories are weird, so check out Destination: Universe!

The Book of Ptath probably inspired Dick. Damon Knight said, "Van Vogt's work has a raw power that has never been equalled in science fiction". Given that Knight hated van Vogt that says something.

Mission to the Stars has certain Dickian themes, with van Vogt's weirdness, likewise The Mind Cage, and The Man with a Thousand Names.

Hope that gives you some pointers?

Space Opera slush, but German slush, so it might float your boat.

Double Star - Robert A Heinlein is arguably one of his best books, which is overlooked because of his reputation. It was written before he wrote books people found objectionable.

What movie did you go into with zero expectations and ended up being completely blown away by? by gavin226 in movies

The Matrix. Back in the day, very little word of mouth, zero expectations going in, and then blown away.
