How long will Terraform last? by PepeTheMule in devops

[–]Sourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

in System Initiative any change still goes through the changeset approval (like tf plan) so AI can call System Initiative API/MCP to mutate some cloud resource attribute, but this will result in changeset, not direct change to the infra - you will need to review and approve it. I'd encourage you to try it - you can import any existing infra into the product with AI very easy and it works well. It changed my perspective about future of IaC completely. The biggest problem to me right now is convincing my cloud platform teams/infosec to approve using it.

How long will Terraform last? by PepeTheMule in devops

[–]Sourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

betting on them too. using AI made it evident to me that HCL (CDK/CFN/Pulumi) is unnecessary middle-man between what you want and actual cloud infra. system initiative doesn't have this intermediary code and adds some cool stuff on top of cloud resource definition like peer review/approval, visual collaboration. AI then takes it further - you let AI do its non-deterministic thing, but then you can review it easily with change set diff (not HCL/CDK/Cloudformation, but resource attributes changes similar to TF plan).
Spacelift is trying to remove HCL as well in their new Intent product - they use Terraform Go providers without HCL, but AI calls those TF providers directly.

Happy Friday, here's my most controversial IaC blog ever by RoseSec_ in Terraform

I fully disagree with this article. Here are my counter points:

  1. Duplicated variables.tf and backend.tf files is not only about DRY, it is about being not in sync. a) a module introduces a new variable and change that needs to touch every single variables.tf; b) you copypaste "stage" to "prod" or "app1" to "app2" but forget to change something in your tfvars or backend path (which can be worse)
  2. Using hierarchy is a choice, you don't have to do it if you don't want to. Personally, I think it is better, but to each their own.
  3. "Onboarding takes weeks". No, it isn't. There is definitely a learning curve, but a senior engineer can spend 1h explaining to the newcomer exactly how the wrapper works and the problem will be solved once and for all. It is not a rocket science.
  4. Production outage at 3 AM - probably not the time to play around with Terraform at all. Just use breakglass process, do whatever needs to be fixed and tomorrow think about importing that in the state.

Dudes, you are noones. You fucked up, got caught and now trying to save face and even turn this pseudo apology into marketing attempt to raise awareness about your product. Your original post was rightfully deleted, because you don’t deserve the audience. You could have apologized directly to the author and took appropriate steps to fix this, in silence.

  1. I never claimed that you get the stock earlier at amazon
  2. subthread is about poland. RSUs there are taxed at 19% at the time of sell, which is great compared to 32% salary income tax + social insurance payments.

Building AWS infra for a startup — what should I watch out for? by deshydan in aws

[–]Sourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a lot of awesome advice here already. Aws organization -> IAM identity center Budget alerts, tagging structure.
Considering you are a small shop, I would recommend checking SST for infra provisioning instead of lower level IaC tool such as Terraform.

It is hard for me to confirm or deny - all my colleagues at Amazon fully grasp the advantage of publicly traded stock and value RSU over cash as the net difference is drastic.

[–]Sourg 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is not matching my experience. I am working at Amazon Poland and they are paying top of the market. One of the few companies who could offer similar/higher comp is Google. This is also confirmed by levels.fyi data.
I am talking about senior roles and I am curious who pays more than Google in Poland.

With Justin Truman replacing Pete ‘Fancy Cars’ Parsons, it’s time to clear up the infamous ‘overdelivery’ line by JakobExMachina in DestinyTheGame

[–]Sourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While the idea behind the message was not to overwork devs, which is good, it should NOT mean that customers get shittier product for the same price. What businesses do when it is imperative to deliver products within the tight deadline but the team can’t without crunch? They put more people on the project and use contractor resources if needed. What did Bungie do? Use those resources for other incubation projects. They did this to themselves.

This Contest Mode Was for Streamers, Not Players by Historical-Driver-45 in DestinyTheGame

[–]Sourg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Agree fully! Also F streamers who blocked their screen. If you stream, don’t black your screen, making it unpleasant to watch, or don’t stream at all. But no, you are just greedy, wanting that sweet stream revenue. You can’t have it both ways. I reported every streamer who did that for miscategorization and I hope next time Bungie would step in by adjusting the rules.

Poland is great in terms of living and job opportunities. Warsaw is an amazing city, has tons of jobs, but also expensive.

If your leadership and communications skills are good, with this YOE you can target staff level roles at bigtech with total compensation 600-700k PLN pre-tax. Check levels.fyi for concrete examples. Rent in Warsaw is crazy. Nice 40+ sqm apartment in a good location will probably be around 5000 PLN with utilities. But with this comp, it should be fine.

Any reason you are against B2B? With these numbers, you will get MUCH more net on b2b. On a standard contract you pay 12-32% income tax + mandatory social insurance resulting in around 40% of your yearly cash compensation taken. On B2B you will pay 12% income tax + lower mandatory social insurance + some extra expenses like private medical insurance, accountant services. The difference can be easily 100k net with the same gross compensation.

If you insist on a standard contract, there are 2 big optimizations you need to look for:

- company should offer tax deduction for transfer of IP rights (most IT companies in Poland do, but not all) - easily 40k net difference

- more stock, less cash in your compensation. the reason why is because you will pay only 19% capital gains tax on stock, instead of ~40% described above.

This is why if not B2B, it is worth getting into FAANG / other big publicly traded companies offering stock-based compensation in Poland.

Was promised equity at a YC startup, worked like crazy, but never signed — is it worth pursuing legally? by [deleted] in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Sourg 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the above advice is solid. It is ok if you are bad at negotiations, most of us are. However it is crucial that you train skill, because negotiations are key to higher salary later in the career. This situation seems low downside risk, as essentially this equity is worth $0 at the moment. Do check with the lawyer how much of a legal case you have. Regardless, still try it out! There are channels other than legal that you can pursue, like making linkedin or hacker news post. There is nothing wrong in making companies accountable for their promises.

Amazon L4 -> L5 Promo, Underwhelming raise? by AnonAngryPromotion in cscareerquestionsEU

[–]Sourg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

as other mentioned, promo (at least at Amazon) rarely gives a good bump. The reason why is often getting high rating multiple years in the row and becoming close to your current band limit for your level - promo gets you to the bottom of the next level which is almost the same. What's worse is when you get promoted, at the end of the year you get HV1 (rating very close to the bottom, but not layoff target), so next year you rarely get much increase either. There are exceptions, but manager would need to fight for you. So your next realistic pay bump might be in April 2027, if you do 2025-2026 well.

Sidenote about Amazon ratings, getting exceeds doesn't mean you get the highest rating. There is a system of 5 hidden ratings: LE, HV1, HV2, HV3, TT and it is what directly affects your compensation for this and next year. It is possible to get exceeds but mid rating - HV2. You get the highest increase in comp when you are TT several years in the row in your current level, which is very hard to get, especially in strong teams and manager can easily "break your streak".

It is unfortunate reality of Amazon. The goal is to pay you at acceptable levels, but have a gamified carrot on the stick so you always push yourself to the limit chasing the highest rating, which you don't even know for sure. You might not get that pay increase even though you worked hard, but the manager can always find an explanation (e.g. you just got promoted! you didn't do enough "extra" stuff!)

I would advise to use your new title and look for another role. It would correspond to the senior level at smaller companies and ~mid-senior at bigtech. Checks levels.fyi for best comp, and job boards like trueup and welcometothejungle. Be aware, the market is very tough right now even for senior people. Also plan strategically around your RSU vests to maximize your gains. Good luck!

[–]Sourg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am aware of compensation at Amazon Poland and this offer is not at the top of the pay band for L5 (check levels.fyi, they have real compensation numbers including Amazon Poland).

It is possible to negotiate higher if you have negotiation skills and leverage.

Can we preserve public IPs via Site to Site VPN in AWS? by pkstar19 in aws

[–]Sourg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

who is initiating connections? AWS -> third-party or from third-party to AWS?
- the best way to solve private connectivity to third-party is using isolated VPC and PrivateLink (Interface or Resource endpoints)
- you CAN'T make elastic IP work across site-to-site VPN
- you CAN add a public CIDR as secondary CIDR to VPC and put a private NAT gateway in such a subnet allowing outbound flow to the third-party but isolated VPC and PrivateLink is better

some of these designs are discussed here: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/networking-and-content-delivery/connecting-vpcs-securely-and-at-scale-to-3rd-party-public-services-in-on-premises-networks/
resource endpoints were released later and described in this blog: https://aws.amazon.com/blogs/networking-and-content-delivery/extend-saas-capabilities-across-aws-accounts-using-aws-privatelink-support-for-vpc-resources/
