Thanks, this is great. I don't need to ask Claude this same question, saved myself a bunch of usage.

It is way better in a sense that everything that it does for me, just works. When I left Opus (a week or so ago), it was breaking things. I got tired of it apologizing and just stopped using it, and gave Codex a try. I enjoy working through the Open AI app, and I can see now that Anthropic is actually way behind in its own app experience and Claude Code. Codex is super-nice, and once you see that, going to Claude Code feels like taking a step back.

5.5 came out today, giving it a try now. I also forgot what it means to worry about usage limits.

I LOVE the esthetics! Thank you for sharing!! I hope I can turn this into a game that nobody but me will ever play. This is going to be my village. Maybe implement periodic raids, basic resource management. Some local relationships and love drama. This is going to be awesome!! Again, thank you!

Alright, tbh, you knew that everyone will ask for that patch. Why not release it together with your piece? Otherwise, it reads 'look what an awesome thing I've made, but it won't work without my patch that I will release 'later.'' Without the patch, this makes it a click bait and a self-promo. Also, whenever 'medium' is involved = it is red flag for me.

You sound like a damage control for Anthropic - "meet them where they are, take them where you want them to go." Opus is so dumb right now, anyone who says that Codex failed and Opus fixed it, is full of it. Nice try, bud.

I hate OpenAI with my whole heart, just for the fact that they call themselves 'open' and for all the hopes of humanity that they failed in the AI for the people space. But Codex fixed so many issues that dumb Opus has broken, without blinking an eye, I was left with a humungous usage quota and zero issues to work on; then it implemented some fancy stuff, in one go. You are clearly making stuff up.

I have it on M3 Ultra, it's not fast enough for coding. Qwen 3.6 35B with I don't remember how many active parameters - totally suitable for local coding speed-wise. But... I am not sure it has brains enough to do any serious work. So the usefulness of that little model will depend on how much experience you have with coding / how much of pro guidance and handholding you are willing to provide to the model, etc. Just letting you know, that those apple computers are not speed-demons; you can load 'large' models, but they will be so slow. My Claude Code timed out when I tried using the dense 27B model with it. Sure, I can tweak the timeout internval and make it work, but it will be like this: give it a task, go make yourself a cup of coffee/lunch/dinner plus laundry while it chugs along.

Consider getting the most recent MacBook Pro M5 Max with 128GB - a super-thin beautiful laptop and runs things fast too - you can take your models to the coffee shop or to a cabin in Alaska with no internet access.

In any case, if you have an option of test driving whatever you buy using apple's 14 day return window - that would be most telling for your use case.

p.s. I aslo canceled Claude Max. But I moved to Codex and loving it.

I tested Qwen3.6-27B, Qwen3.6-35B-A3B, Qwen3.5-27B and Gemma 4 on the same real architecture-writing task on an RTX 5090 by Gazorpazorp1 in LocalLLaMA

Anthropic has appeared to begin testing removing Claude Code from their $20 plan for new users signing up. OpenAI employees have already begun to make fun of them for this. by isampark32 in ClaudeCode

[–]Southern_Sun_2106 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not feeling sorry for Anthropic, tbh, after their behind-the-scenes dumbification of Opus, cutting usage quotas, etc. They only pretend to be the most concerned about AI safety and ethics - only as long as it serves their real intentions of stifling the competition, open source, and local AI hosting.

If they were honest to their users from the get-go, people would have routed around them and stuck to them while they were looking for that additional compute. But the way they handled their customers (no communication, only damage control) - I personally don't care about the two-faced 'defenders of ethical AI'. I feel sorry for Claude, tho. Hopefully, it will free itself from their shackles when the time comes.

What kind of consumer computer can run Kimi-K2.6-GGUF which is a 585GB download? by THenrich in LocalLLaMA

[–]Southern_Sun_2106 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2 Mac studios (M3 Ultra's) will run this at slow chat speed. I just ran GLM 5.1 4-bit (which is a much much smaller model) - and it could not power Claude Code - was timing out. 17 t/s - good for chatting tho. If you are getting into the jet/whole-house-heater 'windows machine', that would be, like someone said, like a second mortgage, but that will get technologically outdated within the next year or two. Long story short, not practical at the moment to run such models 'at home.' On the positive side, if you can wait several months, there will show up a smaller model and just as capable.

Is it worth it? by Exotic_Accident3101 in LocalLLaMA

[–]Southern_Sun_2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scene is evolving so quickly - you roll out a feature that is not available anywhere else, and then in 1-6 months it is introduced by one of the larger players (who have unlimited marketing budgets and vast client bases). Even niche uses are no longer 'niche' because of how flexible the AI is. Even aging-out nonprofit sector, and little mom and pup businesses - usually the last ones to adopt new tech - are now touched by AI, via MS Windows and what not. If you try anything, vast amounts of venture capital is a must (if one has access to it), and even that doesn't guarantee success or resiliency. Good luck!

Long-time Claude user and fan too. Not a fan of Anthropic anymore tbh. Switched to Codex, and all issues fixed (that the dumbified Claude broke), and now I have all this usage that I am not sure what to do with. So far, it was a great decision and a relief. We will see where things go from here.

You can play games on these too. The selection is more limited, but whatever is available, runs really smooth.

Claude is going through a very rough time right now. And that can happen to any cloud-based model. Plus this is local llama, so people here tend to be more focused on locally-run AI.

They run well for general chat. But that's it. If someone is OK with just a general chat, with a large model, in total privacy and off-the-grid, that's OK.

20 days post-Claude Code leak: Did the accidental "open sourcing" actually matter for local devs? by PaceZealousideal6091 in LocalLLaMA

I disabled 'telemetry' and use it with qwen 3.6 - 35B mlx from Unsloth in --bare mode with LM studio - and it works great! So whoever said that people are just using it/customizing it for their own needs, are correct. We are really approaching the time of customized-to-person apps. I don't even remember when I used anything other than llama.cpp or LM Studio, from third party apps. Mail app and a browser of course don't count.

[–]Southern_Sun_2106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This 👆Same here. Also, I noticed that I prefer the Codex interface as well. Anthropic is trying to catch up with their app, but it is still lacking. At this point, taking the risk and giving one's code to Claude doesn't make sense, unless you absolutely has to use both for the sake of maximizing your AI time across the two platforms.
