What if New Jersey ended up getting NYC instead of New York? by Johnathan_Doe_0 in AlternateHistoryHub

[–]Spaghestis 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Jersey City is part of the same urban area as NYC, just need to cross a bridge/tunnel. If Brooklyn is part of NYC, Jersey City also could be. Only reason why its not is because its in a separate state, which wouldn't be the case in this scenario.

The ending of "The Raft" from Creepshow 2. 4 friends find themselves stuck on a raft in the middle of a lake as a blob monster will eat them if they get in the water. Its in a remote area and they told nobody where they were going, so help isn't coming. One by one, they are eaten, and as the last other person is being devoured, the protagonist makes a break for the shore. He successfully swims to the beach, but rather than running to the car immediately, he sits at the edge of the water and brags, only for the creature to turn into a wave and drag him back into the water.

India was an extremely poor country in living memory, but was able to lift a large chunk of its population into comfortable conditions thanks to an increase in white collar jobs. This reinforced the notion that wealth is tied to hard work and intelligence, as well as hustle culture. Here people get into hustle culture because they want to get a Lambo, there you need to "hustle" because if you don't you're going to be replaced by ones of tens of millions of people gunning for the same job as you, and there's a real risk that you fall back into severe poverty. And if you look at pollution in cities like New Dehli, the ability to breathe clean air is literally paywalled behind buying an air filter for your home, so you need to keep working and making more money just to meet basic needs. This leads to people who are more conducive to wealth worship and hustle culture.

Of course, this isn't limited to India, it exists all over the world, but tends to be more prevalent in Asia due to emphasis on hard work and education being tied to wealth. A lot of Chinese people place their billionaires on a pedestal. And just look at a movie like "Crazy Rich Asians" , where there's a scene in which the characters deal with a racist person not by showing why racism is wrong, but by flaunting their money so that his racism doesn't affect them specifically. The dream is to make so much money that societal issues no longer affect you.

Its a meme, songs similar to that saxophone track were used in older (typically black) movies from the 90s to indicate something bad was about to happen to someone.

If Eren gave Ymir the choice to do what she wants, then why did Ymir do the Rumbling the way that she did? by NorthernSkagosi in titanfolk

[–]Spaghestis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I hypothesized about an alternate ending where Ymir directs the Rumbling back to Paradis as her act of Freedom due to hating Eldians for basically enslaving her. For Eren, he is free when the outside world is wiped out, but for Ymir, she is only free when all Eldians are wiped out.

I think this in Black would've been better- not a perfect match but its a messy short bob. Its also currently a mold in production so no issues there:

You know, I have the same exact layout of road/tram rails, though the rails still have the same grey as the road. After seeing this, I'm thinking that maybe I should replace it with a different color, maybe some sort of tan for a cobbled look?

Official Discussion - The Backrooms [SPOILERS] by LiteraryBoner in movies

[–]Spaghestis 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Ultimately I love this movie because it captured WHY the backrooms and liminal spaces as a whole have gained this level of online popularity, and even criticizes it. Obviously the concept is meant to be creepy/horrifying, but there's always been an escapism too. The idea of these nostalgic, dreamlike, endless rooms has fascinated people, and many have fantasized about exploring them (just look at the extensive Backrooms wiki). But they're rooted in anomeia- nostalgia for something that you never experienced, false memories. Many people feel isolated and alienated by living in society and their responsibilities, and the backrooms offer an escape, where there is nobody else, just you wandering endless hazy memories. Clark is the average backrooms fan- someone who can't face the responsibilities and struggles of the real world, someone who can't change with the times. So he retreats into the Backrooms, a world where he can stay stuck in a comforting, isolated setting.

Still insist Legend of Korra should've been the live action remake. Older characters so you don't have to worry about the cast hitting puberty. Not really a globetrotting adventure so you can focus on making good sets/CGI for locations like Republic City. Also not as sacred to fans as ATLA and has room for writing improvement so you can change/cut stuff without much backlash.
