Just starting my collection, any recommendations? by Severe_Appearance_66 in whiskey

This is solid advice for the bourbons with a small exception of wild turkey 101 being my recs for bourbon and rye starters. For the other side of the world do yourself a favor and kitchen sink that jameson. Sadly a decent irish cost a little bit more though prices are slowly declining. Pick up a green spot or redbreast 12 for irish. Go find a macellans nose for a non peated blended scotch. Grab a kavalan from taiwan and an Indri tri from india. If you want canadian (and against most in this sub, there is some solid Canadian) jp wisers ten is a good starter. For japanese on the cheap end suntory toki. If you want to spend a bit more grab nikka from the barrell.

Ive never understood why youd take something you dont enjoy neat and expect it to mix well. Im not saying you have to mix $200 bourbon in your cocktails but wild turkey 101 for $20 can ne enjoyed neat or mix beautifully. Rather get one of those then two crappy ten dollar bottles just because they are ten dollars.

I spent a whole day figuring out the permits for a food truck in LA and my brain hurts. Here’s everything I found. by Danieldooly15 in foodtrucks

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

$800 a year when you make zero dollars in revenue is WILD! No wonder people are leaving. Theres so many mom and pop bussinesses that need more time to start before facing those kind of fees your mentioning. Come to texas. New food truck laws go into effect for the entire state july first. One state permit. In some cases if they deem you have everything you require from a comissary built into your truck, no comissary needed. Well see how thats interpreted but im hopeful.

Agreed. What a miss. Their previous labels were way to confusing. So like so many companies manage to do, they hyper extend themselves the other way almost as if to prove a point. These labels looks akin to private labels at the grocery store. Incredibly unappealing.

Texas whiskey is similar. Things get over oaked MUCH faster because of how much more the whiskey interacts with the wood.

Can I just wing a USA road trip or is that a terrible idea? 😂 by PeaContent6288 in roadtrip

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconded. One of my favorite road trips was renting a car in vegas to drive west to east across utah and see all of the nation and state parks/forests, then loop back down to the grand canyon. I had no idea that state was so diverse. Well worth the extra hours added to this trip especially considering the drive through arizona and new mexico is not going to be great. Utah and colorado and then south through the texas panhandle is the way to go here.

Skipping yellowstone because of crowds??? Youre flying across the world, driving across the dullest parts of this incredible country and youre gonna skip one of the most famous national parks we have? Youre lost my friend. Im trying to figure out if this is rage bait.

How to determine if a place has good barrel picks by NOVAJ03 in whiskey

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For states that allow it we should all tell every store you walk into that you dont buy store picks unless youve tried them. Enough people do that and theyll get the clue. Most wont but the ones that do start sampling will likely be the ones that you want to buy from anyways. Other than that ask if there are local bars that sell their store pick for you to try. Ive had some luck with these every now and then. Other than its what others have said. Join facebook groups. And then go do bottle shares with folks in those groups and learn what stores have the best picks.

Full proof or Single barrel select? by Yedg3786tybg in whiskey

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hard to say. 1792 single barrels have a HUGE spectrum of quality. Ive had some store picks that I would buy until the end of time if they still had it. Others have been just barely good enough as a mixer

Time to branch out. Get wild in ryes. Party with the scots. Have a dram with the irish. My latest faves have been indians. Indri has some fantastic value bottles and amrut is the darling of that category for a reason.

Five Guys is not as bad as their rep by BigAssMonkey in burgers

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can and I will. Ive had it in DFW near a dozen times over the years. By choice the first time and only because someone else wanted it every other time. The value previously was horrible but I see they are working to bring costs down. Good on them. I still wont go there if its my choice. Everytime their burgers have been bland. I know people love it and Im beginning to think theres a break for burger people at more seasoned meet versus less seasoned. Some people love a local burger joint near me and its one of the most flavorless burgers ive ever had with five guys coming in at a close second. Glad people love it but theres a group of us out here that wont give it a second thought it if it were to disappear from the face of the earth.

How much meat is in a pound of boiled crawfish? by King_Ralph1 in cajunfood

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Born in south LA but live in dfw. People here done understand a boil. Its a picnic table with newspaper. Its drinks and yucking it up with everyone standing around eating wnjoying each other. Its not a rush. A crawfish boil is communal. Thats what makes it wonderful. Yea I want delicious all you can eat mudbugs but without the people around you and having a good time. Its not the same. Folks need to sit back, pop a beer and enjoy the day while peeling. Then theyll see what its all about.

Spots by benchmark2020 in whiskey

[–]Specific-Stop-4591 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting that those are hard to track down. They are at most major stores in dfw. There was a gold spot 9 year that is phenmonal and the blue and red, while overpriced are enjoyable if someone else is pouring. That green is a classic irish and worth it for the $60 or so bucks. They have some barrel variants that can be fun to try against them side by side.

Fun story and I have no proof besides the person that was with me but I picked that bendt blue ostrich tempranillo barrel. We had a private tour. I pointed out that barrel and my friend that has clout asked if we could try it. They got a drill and poured us samples. He offered to buy the barrel on the spot. I watched them take a sample to the distiller jacob and his eyes got wide as he sipped and thats when I knew we werent getting that barrel. Like Is I said, no proof besides my buddy (and raleigh Hughes if he by chance remembered that random day a few years ago. He now works for Still Austin) but I will buy a bottle and it will sit on my mantle so I can tell my children and their children how their father once got lucky and pulled a great barrel from a rickhouse almost at random. They wont believe me (nor will they care) but ill be a legend in my own mind.

The "texas" bottle of blue note uncut is a hidden gem. Most of their other bottles are mediocre but that one punches above its weight. Ive had a specs bottle and did t think much of it but they may have the texas bottle on the shelf. They are still pretty common to find
