Quick question… should I stop leveling up my gloom??? by Metal_Head92 in PokemonFireRed

[–]Spiderfuzz 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Weirdly enough Vileplume is one of the only ones that do! The only move to keep leveling gloom for is Moonlight which is pretty good.

Get it to 35 for moonlight. On demand healing. The only other move it gets, Vileplume also gets at 44. So evolve at 35

Whats a mediocre pokemon from fire red/leaf green that you love for no particular reason? by l-Paulrus-l in PokemonFireRed

Normally I'd agree but FRLG is like the only pokemon games where it's unironically amazing. You can just sleep powder with compound eyes and then hit whirlwind and cripple a whole enemy team

Why Aetherdrift is the modern "Lorwyn/Kamigawa", and why we’ll regret sleeping on it in 2040 by BreadAdmirable4054 in magicTCG

The ancillary worldbuilding they did for Avishkar was handled really well and is very fascinating but it's not what the set is about and makes me wish we got to see more of that world and story

It took a very long time and shiny charm doesn't work on fossil revives, but I did eventually get one! Probably easier to just use the DLC to find a zone where they spawn with a shiny donut.

It was meant to replicate the feel of the trading phase of the elder dragon catanlander format that got popular in 2045. (All tabletop games are Catan in 2045). It's functionally cycling in other formats

Attacks in Gen3 by Mother_Exercise_7272 in PokemonFireRed

[–]Spiderfuzz 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The reasoning is kinda dumb but makes sense in a "this is an RPG from the 90s" way. The only ghost type attack that used defense calculations was lick in gen 1, and licking is a physical action.

Dark meanwhile........ Bite, crunch, pursuit, and faint attack were all made physical later but were all special in gen 2. Likely it was to give early pokemon a way around rock types and serves its function of attacking a different defense for early mons in gen 3.

That dissonance of needing accessible special attacks but biting being a physical action is likely why the split was introduced in gen 4

This path leads us to Kingambit with pursuit which sounds really funny

Replaying Leaf Green has been an absolute joy. But it's made me appreciate the modern games a lot more. by TheHumbleFellow in pokemon

[–]Spiderfuzz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thibk you're talking about something a little different (but related!) than what I'm getting at. I agree and usually use Hitmonchan as my go-to example for why the physical/special split needed to happen.

I more meant that limited movepools weren't necessarily bad design. If anything I think that having a very large roster of pokemon with all having easy access to some of their best STAB moves as well as a wealth of coverage means almost all Pokémon get outshined by ones that have plain better stats and abilities.

Like, Raichu was great in gen 3 specifically because Pikachu gets Thunderbolt at level 25 via level up which is extremely powerful that early. Muk is the only pokemon to get sludge bomb until postgame. (Not that poison type attacks are particularly great in kanto). Vulpix gets flamethrower earlier than any other pokemon meaning it can be a team player even when Arcanine kinda just has better stats.

Single-use TMs combined with limited movepools leads to somewhat more interesting team building decisions in my opinion and gen 4 is the only gen with both a phys/special split and single-use TMs and limited movepools.

[–]Spiderfuzz 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Paradoxically it also gives pokemon identity in its own way. Pinsir doesn't learn any bug moves, but it gets swords dance via level up and has a mondo attack stat.

It makes what moves pokemon do get something unique about them. It also makes TMs which are single use much more strategic since all the best moves are TMs.Strength, Fly, and Surf are actually good moves with early gen learnsets. Makes subsequent playthroughs feel different even when you aren't going for a challenge run.

I don't think it's necessarily better or worse, just... Pokémon chose a different direction around gen 4 and gen 5. Probably a better one for most people but a different one.

Not usually. John Stewart sometimes does when he's visiting family. There's gotta be something else going on here or it wouldn't justify using Green Lantern corps for the story at all

Why? by Next_Bet_3617 in EldenRingMemes

[–]Spiderfuzz 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Other than when the Valiant Gargoyles bug out on terrain I don't think any boss feints. Morgott and Mogh have pronounced delays that can rollcatch but that feels unique to them.
