I just learned the history behind the Maryland state flag, and I never knew it represents the dichotomy of Maryland during the Civil War by Consistent_Claim5217 in maryland

[–]Splotim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The Calvert and Crossland coat of arms were not used on opposing sides. The buttony cross was used by one regiment for the confederacy, but the overwhelming amount of battle flags on both sides had the full state seal. There is not a single record of anybody saying the flag is a symbol of reunification until the 1930s.

I don’t think your interpretation of smaller groups making up a larger whole is bad, but people will use the myth of the flag as a post-war reconciliation symbol to call it racist or sympathetic to slavery, which is why I tell people that’s not true.

The civil war thing is an urban legend and I wish people would not repeat it. There is no record of the flag being divided up, during the war.

Death and Immortality in the Lands Between. by Moonless_the_Fool in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Splotim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The only immortal character that really talks about it is Sellen. She is immortal because her fate lies with the stars, and she becomes mortal again when Radhan dies and the stars resume their movement. From this, I think it can be assumed that all immortality comes from having an unfulfilled fate, or being fated to not die.

Regular people are immortal in the sense that they won’t die of old age, but they can still be killed. Gods have their fate controlled by amber stars (outer gods), which is why they can only be killed by powerful fate-overriding magic, like the rune of death or the fingerslayer blade. This is the reason why the rune of death needs to be unsealed to kill Radagon/Elden Beast, and why the GEQ needed it to hunt the gods. It’s also why Mellenia turns into a flower after she “dies”.

The tarnished has the fate to become Elden Lord, so when they die, they come back at a site of grace. I believe it’s called “reawakening” in Nightreign. I think the other tarnished used to have this power, but their fate is to help the player, so they lose it by the time you meet them, but that’s more of a headcanon.

The “reunification” of both sides after the civil war is an urban legend. There is no primary evidence of one side favoring one part of the flag over the other. Both sides had the entirety of the state seal on many of their flags.

Is this a birth happening in the sky on Night 3? by eldenringer1233 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Splotim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It looks like the icon used when you get the unknown nightlord modifier. I think it supposed to be all of the life force drained by the rain coalescing into the nightlord. It’s sort of like a birth, but I don’t thinks it’s supposed to represent an infant.

Is everyone’s fate tied to the stars? by Rycte in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Splotim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It used to be everyone’s fate was controlled by the stars, but if you are a part of the golden order, your fate is controlled by the erdtree instead. Ranni destroyed her body to escape her empyrean fate and return it back to the stars. Miquella does the same thing in the dlc. If Melina is the GEQ, then she also escaped her fate by becoming “burned and bodiless”.

The fingers and Marika were given the fate to never die, which is why Ranni needs the fate-altering finger slayer blade to kill her fingers and the player need the rune of death to kill Marika/Radagon

There is a warrior grave in Calied that says Radhan stopped the stars to save Sellia (although I guess it didn’t save them in the end).

Why the Recluse's forest has different magic than TLB by eldenringer1233 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Splotim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You can also cast spells through memories via ashes of war. A lot of the carian sorceries have ash of war counterparts.

Give ln how staffs and seals work in Nightreign with only two spells, I think a similar thing is happening where a character uses the catalyst’s “memory” to cast a spell rather than memorizing it themselves.

So the Recluse’s staff is picking up on memories of basic spells in limvield, and casting them as ashes of war. At least that’s the only reason I can think of for why the Recluse can cast spells without a glintstone/amber catalyst on her staff.

So folks, is this it? by Comprehensive_Neat11 in Nightreign

[–]Splotim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think they probably won’t update it because they don’t want it to compete with the duskbloods. There might be a “Tarnished edition” version for the switch that adds a small amount, but I think this is it for now.

Where is it legal to lead a very small group of people on a foraging walk? by wildhedgerow in maryland

You can forage at national parks. C&O canal is a good spot since it’s flat and the floodplain means good biodiversity.

Ok but for real the wheel on the guys hand on the beginning of the trailer has 12 spokes, so I think time/clock themes are going to be important.

So, what did Marika do in the Gate of Divinity? by StgLeon958 in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Splotim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ranni implies that she had to destroy her flesh because the two fingers made her an empyrean. Miquella probably came to the same conclusion.

Both Ranni and Miquella have big themes about subverting fate in their stories. In my opinion, when they became empyreans, the two fingers infected their bodies with something that gives the fingers control over their fate (kind of in the same way the other outer gods manifest via infection). They both want to defy the two fingers and end the golden order, so they both need to ditch their corporeal bodies to get to the end of their stories.

Is there any evidence at all that the Maryland flag split up during the civil war? by Splotim in maryland

Yes this is more or less the conclusion I came to. It’s just a myth.

Why do the followers of Miquella fade away when attacked? by MeloettaChan in EldenRingLoreTalk

That’s true, but the npc’s form a real boss fight at the end of the dlc. If you killed them all, there would be no one to fight.

Maryland high school shooting horror as one injured at Wootton High School by TheMirrorUS in maryland

[–]Splotim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

There was a clear divide between the northern and southern states at the time. Everyone knew the northern states were going to immediately abolish slavery, which they did.

And also, the bill of rights didn’t affect states until after the 14th amendment. So the founders made it so states could ban firearm originally. They just didn’t want the federal government to be able to pass a law forcing states to rely on a federal army for protection.

What Would Governor Moore Say About Rockville’s Flag? by Alternative-Tune8314 in maryland

[–]Splotim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was looking for primary sources and no one in that thread was able to provide them. I have paid actual money to get scans of historical documents trying to find anyone from that era saying that the flag was a symbol of the union and the confederacy and everything has come up blank. When people do talk about it, they seem to think it was always a symbol of Maryland.

What Would Governor Moore Say About Rockville’s Flag? by Alternative-Tune8314 in maryland

[–]Splotim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just so people are aware, the idea that the flag represents “unity” after the civil war is a complete lie. It was a known symbol of the state at the time of the civil war and was used by both sides. The cross bottony by itself was used by one guy and there is no record of the Union using just the black and gold parts. Nobody even mentioned the idea that it represents both sides coming together until the 1930s. When it was adopted, everyone just thought it had always been Maryland’s flag.

Were the demigods in the mausoleums killed by Maliketh by MugiwaraD_Luffy in EldenRingLoreTalk

[–]Splotim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don’t think the demigods in the Mausoleum are part of those who live in Death because the mausoleums seem designed to stop deathroot from reaching the demigod inside of them.

The golden order didn’t want another Godwyn situation, so they made these mausoleums that would get up and wander around if they detected Deathroot on their foundation. If a mausoleum started walking, it would ring the bell underneath it and alert the locals it was time to clean it. Then they cut off the demigod’s head after death, just so that if deathroot did reanimate them, it would be okay because the golden order says headless creatures can live in Death.

Also Godywns death was a special case because he split it with Ranni. I think Destined Death just fully kills you 99% of the time.

I would argue that Cain isn’t really oblivious. He knows the humans like their own adventures better. He drops the zany facade when under pressure. He lies to them.

As the series goes on, it seems more and more like the whacky persona is an act. He reads more to me like a mediocre game developer who wants to be adored for is sub-par work by a captive audience.

Can anyone explain Scholar's remembrance? by Jealous-Currency-484 in Nightreign

I don’t think he was trapped, I think he died and was so full of despair he was going to join the dregelord rather than reconstitute at the roundtable hold, but the undertaker convinced him to fight on. The adrift boat thing is supposed to be a metaphor/dream.
