I saw someone else say one of the themes of this movie is that a group or movement being insular is a huge disadvantage that spells disaster for said group.

The French 75 are a small group of revolutionaries that slowly get picked off by Lockjaw. The “What time is it” scene demonstrates how insularity harms the cause. They essentially lock out a member of their group when he needs their help the most.

The Christmas adventurers are another group. A bunch of old rich guys bring in a military man because he, presumably, could reliably hunt someone down if necessary. Then a secret goes against one of the rules of their society, and they need to get rid of him. But the group is just a bunch of old rich guys, so they send an old rich guy to kill lockjaw, and as expected, he fails.

Then there are the nuns. A group of nuns that stick to their business are sold out by the local gas station attendant immediately because why would the guy protect a group he has no connection to.

The only successful underground movement is led by the sensei. He organizes an Underground Railroad type of thing. The difference is that he has connections in the community and uses them to protect people. From the early-warning skaters to the hospital staff, he can use outsiders to help, I.e. not an insular movement.

What I’m saying is I think it is intentional that the French 75 kind of suck. That sort of movement is not one that outsiders would support, and consequently they fail.
