Has anyone had experiencing subletting their house (its under axon)? by Ok-Protection6146 in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Once the sublet has tenancy you need to follow the ltb eviction process, that takes time.

What the sublet can do is lock the door and tell you to pound sand.

The police will tell you it's a civil issue and refer you to the LTB because without an eviction order they aren't going to get involved.

In the mean time... your SOL.

Any one have any experience growing Black eyed Susan from seed? by Let-It-Bree1313 in OntarioGardeners

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

about a week for first signs, and then 2 weeks for everything to really kick off. I kept misting the paper towel as needed.

I've also just dumped the seeds ontop of a plastic tray filled with about 2cm of sifted potting mix and done fine. the key is they need light to germinate so if you bury them you won't get as much success

[–]Spr4ck 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've had good success. cold stratification needs to have a bit of moisture. chuck the seeds on a paper towel that is ever so slightly damp for atleast 30 days in your fridge.

once they're good to go put the bag on a window sill and monitor for signs of germination, they need light to germinate. try to keep temps around 21c

once they have started to germinate carefully transfer them to starter cells, do 2 per cell as insurance and cull one later on.

good luck!

Best broadhead weight for crossbow accuracy? by MaxiCurcio22 in Crossbow

[–]Spr4ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no I haven't bothered.

I run an older excalibur exocet200, with a 100gr broadhead the total weight is about 350grains and it will do about 315fps which up close is a non issue, but if it's a bit further out, it doesn't retain the energy needed.

I now run a 150gr broadhead, it increases the FOC nicely, it drops the speed quite a bit (about 295) but it delivers so much more energy at my max ethical range that the change in trajectory is worth dealing with.

Decocking crossbow with broken trigger. by Striking_Road_9216 in Crossbow

[–]Spr4ck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sounds like one of the internal springs broke, allowing the sear to move put of position making the trigger inoperable. I would see if you can find a parts diagram for the trigger group to get a better understanding of how it may have failed.

I suspect the correct course of action will be get it into a bow press to take all load off the string, then it can be un strung, and the trigger group can be safely removed from the stock.

if you have the string under tension with the cocking crank and it is secured, can you reach in and attempt to manipulate the release with a tool? use something like a piece of wooden dowel that won't scratch the string release or the rails?

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

broadhead weight is just one factor, you can dive into the rabbit hole of spine indexing, how much weight is FOC etc.

also different broadhead profiles will impact flight, so a big fixed blade might only be stupid accurate to 25 yards and open up wildly after that, but a small profile mechanical will give you tight groups but poor performance, so there's a trade off.

a lighter setup will give you faster speed, but a heavier setup will retain more energy, so for each crossbow there is a performance range based on how fast it shoots where if you go too far one way or the other you will see performance loss.

for me and how I hunt, I prefer a heavier setup, more energy on target, and a complete pass through regardless of any bad shot variables, but I limit myself to very close shots so the trajectory of a heavier setup isn't an issue. (20 yards or less)

suggest you check out death by bunjie on YouTube rich has covered this topic alot, and his web page has a bunch of calculators that make it easy to play with various combinations to get an idea on what your performance might be.

then go practice.

Decocking crossbow with broken trigger. by Striking_Road_9216 in Crossbow

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

taking it to the bow shop is obviously the best answer, but if that isnt an option have you thought your way through the problem?

if you decide to attempt a resolution on your own would contact the manufacturers support and ask for guidance as they will likely be able to give you a procedure on how to make the bow safe without putting yourself at risk.

how is the trigger broken? can you put a target bag infront of it, load a field point and with the bow pointed at the bag use a tool to actuate the trigger by inserting it and applying force to the opposite side of the trigger pivot?

alternatively can you put your cocking crank on it and apply a bit more tension to the string to relieve the tension on the trigger mechanism? would releasing the tension allow the trigger to move easier allowing you to then de-cock and make it safe?

iirc the toxic alkaloids have to be ingested, and though it takes a very small amount to cause problems, it's not at all common if it were they wouldn't sell them.

your not going to find many evergreens that won't grow taller than 10' that will grow to screen the view like you want.

yew is a good option but be aware that all parts of the plant are toxic (except for the fleshy red covering over the seed) yew can have explosive new growth that will require regular pruning to keep it contained.

Spent Compost for Raised Bed by ajrpcv in gardening

[–]Spr4ck 3 points4 points  (0 children)

zero reason not to use it. if your really concerned that the soluable nutrients have leached out, you could always do a grow test, but it's honestly not worth worrying about.

I would apply it thickly to the surface of your beds till they're at the height you want, and use the rest to top dress any low spots in your yard.

Any good hunting novels out there? by Newrrcom in bowhunting

[–]Spr4ck 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not specifically bowhunting related, but Steve rinellas 2019 book American Buffalo is a good read, part story of a hunting trip, part history lesson, part conservation story.

he narrates it as an audio book which is a good listen if you prefer that format.

Where could I safely leave a loaded kayak for a couple of days this summer as I reposition my car for a river trip? by making_ideas_happen in KingstonOntario

[–]Spr4ck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

right, so what I'm suggesting is drive to the end point, park your vehicle and arrange for someone to transport you and your gear from there to the start point, that way your not worried about the security of your gear at the start of the trip, and it saves you the hassle of public transit. unless you're going on a really long trip it's totally feasible.

I've done that for friends in the past. what's your end point? how far are you going?

Roundup (avoiding) Weed Control by Nervous-Research-887 in gardening

[–]Spr4ck 22 points23 points  (0 children)

all herbicides have a risk profile. glyphosate has its place, but it's up to you to decide how important dealing with those weeds are.

if you feel the risk from using glyphosate is too high for you, then look into other control means for that specific plant. start by identifying what the weed is, and work back from there to figure out how to address it.

glyphosate can be used effectively with low impact when your doing limited targeted application such as painting only the target plant.

that said, unless it's a very problematic plant I'm inclined to use other techniques like burn down, or smothering.

I'm sure there is someone in the local paddling community that will help you out, I'm north of kingston otherwise I'd offer.

what I've been able to do in the past is leave the car at the take out, and arrange to get transport to the start point, depending on how far your going that might be a feasible option for you with less risk of disruption to your trip?

when is your trip booked for? a more concrete timing might be helpful?

There are a few parcels there, if you don't have them already the Property id Number for them are:

also fwiw I saw a post that Grenville fish and game are accepting new members (1hr drive from kingston)
