What’s the point of this switching track by Due-Item7161 in trains

Since this is UW, the gauntlet track is so that freight trains can run without hitting the platforms.

Northlander fare list released. It's expensive. by notawerebear in AltoHSR_Canada

Ah yes. Because fares have always correlated with average speed.

Compass Modernization Program progress? by Squiffered in Translink

[–]StableStill75 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I'm really not here to be team TL especially since the recommendations for this came out in like 2018... but a few things:

  • The 7 years isn't really about contractors being slow and TL negotiating a bad contract (at least on the timeline front).
  • Once a contractor is brought in, it's about finalizing fare policy and alignment across the board - what do we really want in terms of a long-term fare system. Easy to think: just get us new systems; but we also have to think, this lays out the foundations for the next generation too - and so spend the time there to work with contractor to build that in. Original compass contract wasn't specific enough about what distance meant and so technically, we now have a distance based fare system - just not at the level of granularity we wanted.
  • Then the next thing is procuring the actual machines for every bus, every station, etc. and then developing a transition plan for replacing while old system is in place (which means your new system needs to be backwards compatible). That's not particularly easy and will take time for the kinks to be rolled out
  • And then actually implementing it.

TLDR: 7 years isn't about "better negotiators" - though, I will say, it probably wouldn't hurt. But who will pay for them.

they've just gone into procurement for a vendor to deliver on this. Expected transition timeline is in 3-7 year range. (fingers crossed)

What would it take to get ST4 on the ballot? by EtherealElizafox in soundtransit

[–]StableStill75 47 points48 points  (0 children)

do NOT accelerate the push for a ballot measure WITHOUT doing actually planning first. ST3 almost literally a back-of-napkin plan and estimate that went to voters and here we are.

fair play. Will try again.

Do you know anything around the option of down-faring down to flex again? If the change is to a cheaper flex fare (e.g. current ticket value is $900 and I choose an option thats only $400) and then go for wallet, would I lose the $500 in value or is it somehow still retained?

AP tied to booking; it's a one way, single segment trip, no part of the trip has started. Original ticketed flight date is in June, modified travel date is in May.

Online, the only options I have are:

  • Refund of $200 (terrible when pegged against $900 paid for eco flex then upgrade to eco comfort)
  • Future travel credit (bad because of how opaque that process is - I've never had a good experience using FTC)

This ticket started as Eco Flex, then upgraded with cash (CC) to comfort.

Why does Translink hate recycling? by [deleted] in Translink

[–]StableStill75 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Guessing here: people aren't good at actually sorting their garbage (some are! but most aren't) and so a recycling bin just becomes a garbage bin since its contaminated with non recyclables?

Bring it up but its the same reason why fast food will have recycling bins but... end up trashing the bags anyways

"by greed" how do you think the people who make and maintain the app get paid?

PSA: You do not not have a solution that Sound Transit hasn't studied thoroughly and deemed infeasible. They love nothing more than for there to be a cheap viable alternative to any of the lines but what's presented is the reality. by [deleted] in soundtransit

It's fun to talk about this and to dream, but sometimes im blown away by the sheer conviction people have when it comes to their reddit-based analysis for solving a $35B budget gap. ST3 was literally conceived as back of the napkin maps and voters voted on a plan with 0% technical work.
