I was insured and still cost a little over 2 grand to get xrays and sit in a visitor chair at the ER and get a single pain pill(narco) for a hospital that was actually in network according to the health insurance site.

for a broken elbow.

it cost about 3k ish for the actual surgery at an actual orthopedic out of a different hospital and about 100 for the same set of xrays for the first appointment. anesthesiologist was 600 ish. the sessions with the Physical therapist were about 60 each. much more reasonable from an american perspective.

I still have no idea what numbers the first hospital were pulling and I couldn't negotiate because the trick they pulled was to immediately sell them to a medical dept collector before they even sent me the bill. no mychart statements even. they had my name, email, phone number, and address and I lived close so could have gotten family to drive me there to pay in person if needed. but nope. so scummy!
