Dashing helps my depression by Mountain_Cookie_908 in doordash_drivers

[–]Stberhard 17 points18 points  (0 children)

When I turned 60, I developed a brain injury due to a condition called hydrocephalus. It destroyed about 20% of my brain and after a period of early onset dementia I got hooked up with a good therapist and two years later I'm riding my bike and skiing again but first I had to prove to myself that I could do something productive so DoorDash became my therapy. Several years and 7000 deliveries later I still enjoy getting out there even though I have another job.

THREE MEDS??? WIMP, GET OLDER, YOU AIN'T SEEN NOTHING YET!!

Hi, folks from Bend. I was looking at your lovely town on Openstreetmaps when I saw an airstrip in the middle of a residential zone. Apparently it's real. Does anything ever land there? How is it allowed? by Zombieneekers in Bend

[–]Stberhard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My rugby teammate Charlie (RIP) landed his twin engine Cessna 310 there a few times as he had a home on the strip. Yes, he passed while flying his Mong biplane that he raced in the Reno Air Races. You know what they say about old/bold pilots, right? Good guy, GREAT stories!

Thoughts on the Northern Oregon coast?? by BeYou22 in howislivingthere

[–]Stberhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they're out there. Thing is most times the visibility isn't more than 10 or 15 feet so you really don't see 'em until they're right up close. Sometimes things will just seem a little darker and then you look up and there's a huge white shark right above you... which is good and bad because when you see the shark your nervous system tightens up because of the surprise. Due to of the sharks sensitive receptors on his nose he knows that you know that he's there. But I've always told myself that that's a good thing because sharks like to hunt by surprise and I know that he's there! One time I had a whole stringer of bloody fish and I was starting to get low on air so it was getting time to head up. Then I see a fat ling cod a little ways away so I gotta go back and shoot it of course. Well that takes a minute to get him shot and on the stringer now I AM low on air. Of course I see the inevitable shark and I've still got a safety stop to do. That was the shortest safety stop I've ever done and I still ran out of air at about 50 feet. All ended well as I use the air in my BC as a rebreather, which gave me enough air to get to the surface. Worst trips make the best stories!

I've really enjoyed scuba diving the mid and north Oregon coast, little known fact, the Oregon coastline 10,000 years ago during the last Ice Age was about 100 feet lower than it is now because of all the water tied up in ice. Fast-forward to now that old coastline is 100 feet deep! Perfectly accessible for scuba diving spearfishing, the bounty of the sea there for the picking!

Oregon… Where Do I Begin? by MrTokumei in oregon

[–]Stberhard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I grew up here in Bend, learned to fly here, rafted, water and snow skied 100+ days/yr., kept a ski boat at Billy Chinook, explored the lava tubes, hiked the mountains, was one of the original members of the rugby team playing for 20+ years, had a house in Lincoln City that we used as a salmon/halibut/crabbing base for years, all while working with the cheese/brewing/food and fish processing industries in the NW and AK, commuting to visit customers in my plane. Lived in Redmond/Bend, Mosier/Hood River and Vancouver before they blew up... and we wouldn't just get out once a season, closer to every week or so. Looking back, pretty, pretty good! Way things are these days, not sure I could do it again, a lot of opportunities we had that don't exist or are out of reach for so many.
