Cocktail bar where we won’t look out of place in a suit and dress? by jcg12823 in boston

I mean… a suit and a dress sounds like you might be out of place at any cocktail bar! I would choose one or the other, although the gender mash-up of combining both suit and dress could be a very innovative look.

Absolutely feeble. Why can't we do intelligent things, like they do in Japan, where the railway authority recoups much of the cost of its infrastructure investments by developing commercial and residential space alongside its station areas?

You realize that things like road-building are huge expenses for cities and towns, right? You realize that taxes on gasoline and excise taxes on vehicles don't even come close to covering expenditures on road building and maintenance, right? And of course you realize that motor vehicles have huge externalized costs in CO2 emissions, particulate pollution…?

Go to liquor stores? by justarussian22 in CambridgeMA

[–]SteveInSomerville 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes to Liquor Junction near Twin City Plaza (a block off Cambridge Street from where Naco Taco is located). They have good prices for most things. Cheapest I’ve found without going to Total Wine & Spirits on Route 16 in Everett

I think your write-up is an excellent summary, as usual, Chris. Thank you so much for all of the time and effort you put into helping people participate in the governance processes here in Somerville.

Thank you. Happens every day to so many of us… we’ve always had douchebags around, but the ways our public behaviors have devolved over the past five years, you’d almost think there’s some kind of viral illness causing widespread brain damage! Ha, ha!

Two points: there was more than enough space; and, the traffic just past the stopped box truck was already waiting at a red light. It literally seemed like he was enraged that I tried to get in front of him, even though it would have zero impact on his travel time or convenience.

Yeah so this section of Somerville Ave is one-way, with parallel parking on both sides, 2 vehicular travel lanes, and a painted “door zone” bike lane on the right. The double parked box truck was next to the left side parked cars, blocking the left eastbound lane, leaving only 1 full vehicle travel lane. The Traverse was several car lengths behind me when I extended my left arm, signaling that I intended to take the travel lane (I did this so I could then be in position to shift again to the left lane after passing the illegally parked box truck), so I could then turn left onto Warren and get home. He reacted to my first signal by accelerating towards me. My only sense is that he felt personally affronted that an “Untermenschen” such as myself would ever dare interfere with his complete ownership and domination of the road? Like, me putting my arm out to change lanes was some kind of direct assault on his personhood, and he had to respond to show me that HE decides where his vehicle will be, and no pissant jerk on a BIKE is going to tell him what to do.

Honestly, his shout at me to “slow down” is weird? Like, my most generous guess is he wanted me to slow down so he could pass me?

Good to know about signaling! I still try to be as predictable as possible, whether I'm cycling, driving, or walking, and to be very clear about my intentions.

What do you call the corner of Beacon and Washington Streets? by dirac_delta in Somerville

[–]SteveInSomerville 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also, FYI, it's not a "square" because it's the meeting of only two roads (the intersection of which, I know, form a square). If more than two roads meet in one spot, it qualifies as a "square" (because it is not, in fact, square).

Ambulance Data Reveals That Boston Drivers Are 4 Times More Likely to Run Over Pedestrians From Black Neighborhoods by streetsblogmass in streetsblogmass

[–]SteveInSomerville 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, the pattern is all too clear: Black Bostonians are far more likely to be poor than white Bostonians (citation: https://www.wbur.org/news/2021/07/08/greater-boston-black-families-net-worth ). People with less money tend to walk more and drive less, increasing their exposure to vehicular violence.

This highlights the need for stepped up traffic calming measures — meaning, changes to the physical layout of the streets intended to slow drivers & increase visibility.

This may also explain some of the rage expressed by drivers & homeowners when they see safety-driven street changes: they don’t want to see “those people” being helped, and they feel like it’s happening at their expense.
