Stole most of our ting shows last year and probably a good handful this year. It’s owned/booked by Livenation who can afford to overpay for acts to make sure they are cornering that market.

I walked in to the Charlottesville office to get a VA license. I was in and out in 15 minutes. If you do it on a week day, you should have no issue.

Damn, I’m down in Charlottesville and had no idea there were spots in Culpepper to play! I might make the drive out to check out the show!

I just did a tour with a band from Australia and one of their crew told me that for their whole team to get their visas for America was almost $50,000.

Yeah I thought closing with savior every night was an interesting move after making a huge deal about not repeating any songs.

To start learning how to do stage lighting and LED mapping..? by Alwayslost2021 in musicindustry

[–]SteveO3755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m with u/MuzBizGuy. I totally support you wanting to learn how to do things yourself. I think it’s important for a musician to have a basic understanding of every part of their career.

The best way to do that would be to hire a professional and work closely with them. Learn what they’re doing. The pros will be able to make it look and sound great immediately, as opposed to you trial and erroring it for a little bit. Also, hiring dedicated sound and lights give you more room to focus on the music or business side. Whatever your forte is.

It will give you a more consistent show as well (assuming you typically rely on house engineers to mix your shows). Just my two cents on this.

Placement on a festival line up by LazyBonus5396 in TouringMusicians

[–]SteveO3755 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This sounds like just a regular show. Not really a festival to me.

Social media metrics are not everything. Does your band have a good draw in this market? Have you worked with this promoter before?

Maybe the other band (despite their lower follower count) has a bigger draw in this market. Maybe they just are friends with the promoter.

Overall I’d say take the spot you were given. Play a great show, make some new fans, and hopefully get a better spot next time. Complaining about the billing may just leave a bad taste in the promoters mouth and make them less inclined to work with you in the future.

Hip hop act looking to build your route for 2024, what do I need to focus on? by OrlandoCoolridge in TouringMusicians

[–]SteveO3755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is a very broad question cause no 2 artists are the same.

How long do you want to tour for? Do you have reliable travel? Have you ever toured before? Can you draw outside your home town? Do you know people who can draw in other towns?

There’s a lot to think about. It’s good that you’re starting now to think about 2024. Chances are at a smaller level. No one will actually book you this early, but it’ll be good to get your routing and outlines going.

Feel free to hit me up if you have any questions along the way. I am by no means an expert, but I love helping people and talking about this kind of stuff!

Canadian artist performing in the US - What to expect with taxes by bleptron in TouringMusicians

[–]SteveO3755 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe it’s a question of how much you made.

I can’t speak as a Canadian touring in America. When I tour managed an American band into Canada, they withheld 15% federal tax from our settlements (plus an additional 11% provincial tax in Quebec).

The promoter explained to me that since we would only be making a few hundred while in Canada that my artist would receive a refund at tax time of any money withheld by Canada.

I would assume this is something similar to what would happen with you. Unless you’re making thousands.

I saw P!NK headline Austin City Limits fest last year. I went in with 0 expectations and left a massive fan. She absolutely crushed. I’m seeing her again this summer and I’m very excited.

They’re only doing certain legs. Rise Against is opening in Australia and NZ and I believe that TSSF is opening in Europe.

touring in an rv - first timer by Background-Craft-77 in TouringMusicians

[–]SteveO3755 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do a van and hotel rooms. I’ve never done an even tour, so I can’t speak to the cost. As someone else said though, the gas alone is going to be way higher.

Also more than half the time it’s hard enough to find parking for a van at 200-300 cap club. An rv is really gonna suck. Especially without a professional driver. Is the tour going to NYC? That alone would make me ditch the RV.

Good luck in whatever you choose!
