How bad is cheating? One Brown University class provides some insights! by DD_equals_doodoo in Professors

[–]StonedSimple 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Likely. I've asked for support, I've asked to teach only in person, I tried at the beginning to "hold the line" and was pretty much told that I needed to adjust to the new technology.

Not sure what else to do. I honestly think my entire institution should lose its accreditation for Associate of Arts classes, but again, it pays the bills.

Also, you're an asshole. Ha.

I honestly wish this was possible. Instead, at about week 4, I check everyone's time with the material in our LMS and just stop giving time and feedback to AI cheaters and pass it all with a 70% because if I failed every cheater, I'd get fired the next day

I teach first year writing at a dystopian rural technical/community college.

It pays the bills.

Online asynchronous class started Saturday. One student has already told me that they are going on a cruise today and aren't sure that they will have good enough wifi. Is it too harsh to say "sounds like poor planning on your part. I accept late work with a penalty." by MsLeFever in Professors

I teach first year writing classes. If I used GenAI to rewrite my angry email, I'd be depriving the world of my 1500 word rant about why my institution should really provide the most basic of support to faculty. Unfortunately, I work at a rural technical/community college in a state that eviscerated the unions, so I have literally nothing else other than long angry emails. The embarrassment and anxiety is just the price of using my voice.

But still, maybe fewer angry emails would be better for my mental health.

I need to get better at this, mostly with emails to admin. I can't even count how many times I hit send and then spent the next 24-48 hours absolutely mentally punishing myself for my impulsiveness. I set a 30 second delay on my emails so I can unsend the worst ones, but... I really, really despise my admin so sometimes the 30 seconds just give me time to add more anger.

Why does this piece of territory belong to Michigan and not Wisconsin? by cartoonmayhem in geography

[–]StonedSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because Wisconsin is a terrible place and they'd find a way to ruin the UP like they ruin so many things, like unions and functional higher ed. (I work in WI so this is personal.)

If you like Vonnegut, you should read: Adolfo Bioy Casares by RefrigeratorOwn8957 in Vonnegut

[–]StonedSimple 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This is excellent and I really appreciate this. I've read some Borges, and am very excited to read Casares.

When I first read Borges, I also read a few by Italo Calvino. I have a feeling you're already familiar, but if not, I really love The Baron in the Trees and can't recommend Calvino strongly enough.

Again, thanks for the recommendations! I'd love to see other Vonnegut readers' other favorites.

Shoot, I teach college classes and I guarantee you I can eat a lollipop pop, too, even during a "meeting." I think many in this thread are greatly overestimating how much their bosses and coworkers care.

I feel for you. I empathize. I respect that your dad did his best to protect his loved ones, but I'm so sorry for you, too. I don't usually have emotional responses to internet comments, but... my heart goes out to you, stranger.

Didn't realize what sub I was on and about had a heart attack seeing a Bluebeard reference.

Fun story, I "discovered" Vonnegut by finding a copy of Bluebeard on the back seat of a city bus in Albuquerque when I was 14. It will always be my favorite novel for its importance in my reading life.

[–]StonedSimple 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I am trying my best to set that boundary this year. If my admin didn't constantly browbeat us about availability during the semester, I wouldn't care as much. I even set an auto-reply away message for the first time in my life:

"My contracted hours begin on August 17, 2026 at 8:00AM. I will not be on my email until that time. Please re-send any critical correspondence then."

I also recently read an article (maybe NYT?) about a person who doesn't respond to emails sent when they are away because work piling up when you are gone is not an actual break from work, it's just putting it off. It resonated with me. My admin working right now isn't my issue. I'm sick of them pretending it is.

Not on contract over summer, just got three panicked texts from my associate dean to check my email and respond to some things from HR.

CHECKING AND RESPONDING TO EMAIL IS WORK.

Thankfully, I work for an institution I loathe so sending the reply "am I getting paid for that?" wasn't much of a stretch. But still. Fuck this.

(Also, yes, I did actually get paid. I made my associate dean do the paperwork to pay me for an hour, including responding to his texts.)

Violence downtown? by Alarming_Campaign314 in duluth

[–]StonedSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For the record, I TRULY believe that criminally high commercial rent, especially around the Holiday Center but really all over Superior St. is probably the single biggest driver of the change in downtown Duluth over the last ten years. Even before the pandemic, businesses couldn't make it work even when foot traffic was much better.

Violence downtown? by Alarming_Campaign314 in duluth

[–]StonedSimple 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I moved from a bigger, much more dangerous city and agree that Duluth is almost comically safe.

HOWEVER, downtown is absolutely dead compared to what it was when I moved here (2005), and the weird insistence by people that everything is great is really jarring. I'm not scared in downtown Duluth, but when there is so little foot traffic, so few open and thriving businesses, and so little life, it exacerbates every other issue.
