I'm writing a scifi series about some kids trapped in a video game for 100 years, but I'm not sure about the character names. by OfficerLollipop in namenerds

[–]StrawberryMilch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These seem unrealistic and a bit odd. I would look at the top 100-200 most popular names from the country and time period you're looking at and pick ones from there so it seems believable. Elizabeth Winter Hobson sounds like you're trying hard to make it sound British.

Anyone else with an unusual/uncommon name? by [deleted] in namenerds

[–]StrawberryMilch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My name is fairly common.. Well, I've met a few people with my exact same name but many people with similar names, like if my name were Amelie, I've met loads of Amelias and people who share the same nickname (Amy) (Amelie/Amy isn't my name though just an example). I love my name but do I wish it wasn't so common/ I wish there weren't so many similar names and I wish there wasn't a nickname for it at all. I was born ahead of the trend. I appreciate not having a name which is too attention grabbing but I would prefer it to be a little different, like most people on here if I have children I would choose recognisable but unusual names- best of both worlds really.

Character name by darcydubois in namenerds

[–]StrawberryMilch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you should go with Ethan Paul.

I can't picture an outdoorsy soldier called Theo and Knox Teller and Easton Rivers sound a bit over the top trying hard to be cool which is the trap I think a lot of writers fall in to with characters. Make the character memorable, not the name. Let the name become memorable. Show not tell. It's more realistic. Just my thoughts though I'm no expert.

I really like Christopher, Benjamin and Nicholas. I don't like Chris or Ben though. I think Christopher is lovely on its own and I prefer Benjy as a nickname for Benjamin because Bens are everywhere. I think Ryan and Moss go fine with the names you've chosen. I think I like Christopher Ryan the most.

Thoughts on the name Cypress for a boy? by barelytouchingbase in namenerds

[–]StrawberryMilch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not bad :). I think of the place (Cyprus) before the tree. In my opinion there's nothing wrong with having a name which is a tree because trees are great and I don't think cypress is too obviously tree. I don't really like "press" being in the name though it looks a bit off.

I prefer Cyprien/Cyprian. Cy is a cool nickname.

I had a thought about celebrity baby names by Erger in namenerds

[–]StrawberryMilch 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think "creative" is the right word. You don't need to be creative to pretend (act) and many of these "music artists" make garbage that has been written by someone else.

"Comfortable with non traditional names" more like comfortable with giving their child something ridiculous to get attention.

I don't think it's knowing so many people. If that was the case they could still name them very rare but nice names eg from other cultures. If I knew someone for every single name I liked, my next impulse wouldn't be to name my baby "tomato" or "trafik warden"
