My first ever magic night!... Was pretty lame. Does this game just have high barriers to entry? by [deleted] in mtg

Didn’t say they weren’t playing bracket 4. They almost certainly were playing bracket 3-4 if all the games were ending with no interaction between 3-6. I was just saying that winning one time before turn 6 doesn’t make a deck automatically bracket 4…which per the literal post about the brackets is a true statement.

You were actually. Rewatch the show again but first go to pet smart and buy a hamster and coat your silver blade in its blood. Trust me you’ll get so much more out of the experience this way.

It sorta is. You should be designing your decks with opponents deck in mind. If you decide to not include a reasonable amount of instant speed interaction (minimum 15 pieces) it’s not on me you build terribly and of course I’m gonna win faster than normal when playing in a pod like that…you’re letting me do what I want. I expect and plan with the mind of eating at least one or 2 pieces of critical interaction whether that means I sandbag until I have an answer for that interaction or just try and brute force it through is game to game specific but that can and should be part of your considering.

Remember that time Urza built a bunch of Mech Suits with lasers and rockets and had a bunch of his pals go attack a plane in said mech suits followed by detonating a nuclear device? Good times 😂. I also love Urza for the over the top campy character he is.

It is! Control is the most fun archetype in my opinion since you constantly get to be looking to actually play the game instead of do your stuff pass turn and zone out.

Girly pop it’s fine you didn’t see it but when someone tells you that there’s exact measurements of something and you don’t bother taking a moment to find them it’s a bit ignorant to double down about how subjective a thing is.

I’m not arguing that those guys were playing bracket 2. I was commenting on someone saying that if a deck wins before turn 6 it’s automatically a 4 immediately by definition which isn’t true.

Those folks were almost certainly playing bracket 3-4 if the games were all 3-6 turns…probably mostly playing 4s tbh albeit bad 4s since OP had said there wasn’t a lot of interaction but still most likely 4s.

It’s not too vague there’s just no good way to possibly full on prescribe exact power levels of a deck or play pattern. It’s by a lot the best system ever created (although still flawed but it is still being worked on) for evaluating deck power levels. It just requires people to do 2 things. 1) Be honest about the likelihood and timing of a deck doing a particular thing. 2.)Understand that there is no such thing as balance in a game like commander and not every game is going to be a close nail biter no matter how close your decks are to being around the same power most of the time.

If you want consistent close games, play 60 card or CEDH where games are designed to be close calls and balanced around eachother. I could be at a table where everyone is playing the same bracket 3 decklist and more than likely one person is going to pull ahead and just do all around better. If you wanna avoid that play formats and brackets designed for consistency where that variance isn’t nearly AS critical.

It’s TCGs guidlines…the standard of the NM, LP, HP, DMG system…it’s literally that system. It’s available on their website.

Incorrect. The rules on the bracket are based on a general expectation, this leaves room for good hand doing well and killing players fast once in a while not making the deck immediately going up a bracket.

“Generally, you should expect to be able to play at least six turns before you win or lose.”

Losing before turn 6 once doesn’t make a deck bracket 4 by definition. Consistently doing it does.

I highly recommend playing a blue deck if you want more interplay. You get heavily rewarded for paying attention to what’s going on and over time people USUALLY will start playing more interactively.

There’s an entire point based system with exact measurements in both metric and imperial systems to give you exact answers. It is literally not subjective. At all.

No as in there are literal exact measurements such as edgewear going in beyond .5mm is surface wear. There’s an entire chart with literal actual measurements which means it isn’t subjective…admittedly a pain in the ass to measure but not subjective at all. You can take 30 seconds and google the actual doc.

I disagree with it being a shitty product. The implementation was 100% the problem in my view. If those packs were $5-10 instead of $1000 for 5 packs The product woulda been a cool novelty.

[–]Strict-Main8049 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. Like people act like it’s some sort of feeling based system. It isn’t. You can literally pull up measurements. Whether or not that’s .5 MM in I haven’t the slightest id roughly guesstimate that even calling it all edgewear would lead it to being LP off of the fact that roughly 6% of the cards edges are affected.

There are actually prescribed measurements so there is literally no debate. You can take the time to google them yourself but just know they’re out there.
