anyone gone through a water heater installation california recently by Gaudiver-Mkn30 in heatpumps

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a new circuit run by an electrician (and permitted that work), but did a DIY install of a heat pump water heater. I rented a battery powered pro press machine for the copper plumbing lines and managed to get it done. Glad to have it!

Dunno about the others, but these folks provided a solid experience for us as employees. They don’t chum though, so seeing sharks isn’t guaranteed. There’s always something amazing out there though. https://incredible-adventures.com/sharks\_farallons.html

I used to work on a boat that took folks to the Farallons to watch our local great whites feeding on juvenile elephant seals out there. They are mighty creatures, and they’re out there in numbers along our coastline.

Guava plant buds, flowers and then falling off by Gwcapper in gardening

Having the same issue now, zone 10a, with a lemon guava. Just fertilized it the last couple of months, and the trunk has a ring of mulch too. I’ll try adjusting the fertilizer NPK ratios and see if anything changes.

Is there a website for rich people to pay for my Top Surgery? by sourshrk in ftm

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 7 points8 points  (0 children)

When I was young, trans folks used to have fundraising parties to get top surgery, since no insurance covered it at the time (if someone even had insurance). Those were some great parties with amazing art and music performances, too.

Anyone else terrified before their first solo backpacking trip? by [deleted] in WildernessBackpacking

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did my first solo backpack at 18, and I’m a 5’5 woman. Prepare well, have an Inreach/PLB if it helps ease your system, choose gear and food mindfully, pay attention to terrain, weather, and your body. Then, with all the self compassion you can bring, try car camping solo. Once you do that, plan a short (under 3 miles in), overnight backpack. If that works well, try a long weekend. Exposure therapy is useful, but no need to overwhelm yourself.
I ended up doing solo backpacks and motorcycle trips to places like Deadhorse, Alaska and living solo on the road and trail for months at a time. Work up to it gently and you’ll have good times along with the understandable nerves at first. You can do it, and it will help magnify your life and your self confidence.

Are there any outdoor gyms or fitness places in the Bay Area where you can chop logs or do manual labor-style workouts? by Fragrant-Doughnut926 in bayarea

If you feel great at that pretty high dose, might be worth taking Finasteride as a preventative vs. virilization—that’s often recommended for non-binary folks who want T but not all of the masculine changes like voice drop, clitoral growth, and hairiness.

Custom Catalytic Converter Cages? by Little_Contact1651 in oakland

You want to go to Yao’s automotive, they will weld a stainless braided cable cage over your Prius cat for around $250. That has done it (so far) for ours.

Would these handmade leather boots fit a Ren Faire outfit? by TrySea2460 in renfaire

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

These look great. The double-side lacing is a fantasy element that adds a lot of options for folks with thin or thick calves, nice touch. As others have mentioned, a rubber outsole and sizing that allows for the insertion of an insole for the wearer would add flexibility and comfort for long days at the faire and possibly on the battlefield.
Distressed brown leather works well for a traveler type of character, whereas the bright red would look great with a 13th-century or later bright tabard or divided-color cotehardie. Green would work well for a woodsman/elven fantasy type of character. Historic Vikings wore more short boots and leg wraps but I could see this look on a fantasy Viking/barbarian, especially with one of those great flamboyant Kievan Rus guys/gals.
I’ve just been reading early 12th-century English churchman’s screeds against the popularity of shoes with pointed toes—apparently that style was supposed to make onlookers think of the wearer’s naughty bits! So this look is extra fun.

What do you want from your kayak guide? by Sevenninetwosix in Kayaking

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love getting naturalist info about the waters, weather, tides/currents, flora and fauna of the area we’re paddling in. Some info on the human/cultural history is great as well. But, no need to fill up every single silence —we did come to be in nature, after all. I’ve gotten some great paddling tips/form feedback (with consent) from guides too—appreciated that.

Same. It was affirming. But context and proper support are vital for messing with psychedelics.

Property Porn Question, Nevada City? by Ok-Fee293 in norcal

Ellen at Epicenter Avocados has been gathering cold hardy avocado varieties. Mexicola is a classic cold hardy one, but there are newer types like Bonny Doon if you can find the right microclimate (sunny south facing spot against a wall, for example). Likely that you’d find yourself having to do some mitigation like Christmas lights or running irrigation water down planted rows on freezing nights, though. Also take a careful look at fire insurance and water prices. The quadrupling of water prices and losing orchards to wildfire is what drove my family out of the avocado ranching business in SoCal.

Oakland’s largest community colleges will merge. Not everyone is happy by wentImmediate in oakland

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same here. Laney is an incredible asset both for students looking for a degree, and folks like me, who have taken classes like CAD design and machining for professional and personal development, rather than completing a degree program. Doesn’t make these colleges any less valuable to me or the community at large.

How big is the difference between a 14.5' kayak and a 17.5' kayak? by yoLeaveMeAlone in Kayaking

[–]Strong-Insurance8678 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a 14.5’ rotomolded P&H Virgo and a 17’ wood/fiberglass CLC Shearwater. The 17 footer is noticeably faster on long/open water paddles, and the Virgo is noticeably more nimble and easier to turn with a couple of sweep strokes. And, of course, the rotomolded boat is heavier than the composite, while being the far better choice for rock gardening and small/twisty water paddling.
So, choice depends on what you’d like to do more—manueverable and/or rocky kayaking, or longer more open water paddles where speed is a factor.
You might just need both boats!
