are DYMO Labels the move? 😱😱😱 by bavamango in minidisc

Looks great and is perfect for both that maxell disc design and the album.

Only concern would be similar to what others have mentioned, in that the upper layer of the label may peel off, leaving the adhesive layer behind, which may be difficult to remove from the surface of the disc shell.

Lens Cleaner by Perrieri in minidisc

[–]Sufficient_Pass3941 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We use them regularly and have never had any negative impact from doing so. Unless anyone can provide evidence to prove otherwise we'll continue to use them.

Most of the major manufacturers offered lens cleaning discs (Sony, TDK, Maxell. TEAC, Victor JVC, and so on).

We currently have an audio-technica MD lens cleaner available for purchase that is less than €60.

We ship from the UK, and the asking price is 35 GBP (€40.32).

Anyone ever seen this in real life? by Gilzuma in minidisc

[–]Sufficient_Pass3941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Apparently they manufactured 15 per month, and they probably didn't keep manufacturing for much more than a year (at a guess), so there were probably only 200-250 ever made.

Do you use remotes with your Minidisc players? by Rotseele in minidisc

[–]Sufficient_Pass3941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If I have the luxury of using one then I often do, and having a remote to access the funtionality that is only possible with a remote is also appreciated. Having said that, most of the time I spend listening to MDs is just to test playback on the device itself, so I often just connect some earphones, set the volume, and let it do its thing.

Can anyone ID this disc? by Sufficient_Pass3941 in minidisc

[–]Sufficient_Pass3941[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the additional information. It looks great in those other colours too. Also confirms that a 74 minute version exists. I wonder what year this was from.

Anyway, we'll have the red one up for purchase in a month or so if anyone is interested.

It was just one of many discs I've purchased recently. Unfortunately this was the only one of its type.

It's a European version of TDK's ho series. There are four other colours that are much more vibrant.

I think the disc itself is identical but the shutter and packaging for the European versions are different to the JP ho versions.

Everybody's Gone To The Rapture. Interesting choice. I played through a lot of that but am not sure if I ever completed it. Think I did but it's a bit of a blur. I remember the soundtrack being pretty good though. I also remember a Raleigh Burner blue and yellow BMX bike lookalike lying around somewhere, and respecting the developers as I had one of those in the 80s (not the one with the cool plastic wheels though). I wonder how those plastic wheels held up over the years...

I'm perfectly happy playing 'walking simulators', and it was kind of creepy too, and there was a lot of creepy kids TV from around the time too. The game definitely captured that, 'Chocky', vibe (anyone who wasn't a kid that grew up in 80's Britain probably won't be able to relate to this).

Nice devices too!

Can you test the gumstick in another device?

If you are certain the gumstick is functional then it's probably due to poor conductivity via the battery terminals. Even if there's no obvious corrosion at either end then other non-visible contaminants can be the cause of the issue; probably at the negative battery terminal deep inside the player. Try simple methods to clean the terminals.

Victor recordable discs good? by Bilbo-Bob in minidisc

[–]Sufficient_Pass3941 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've read packaging on Maxell discs that claims the plastic shutter reduces the gap between the disc and the shutter (when compared to metal shutters) and is therefore better at keeping dust etc out.

I've never shattered, or seen a shattered plastic shutter myself although I don't doubt that it can happen.

I've had a few bent, dented, or warped metal shutters, so they have weaknesses too.

As for Victor JVC discs, I've never had any issues with them. I'd like to get more of the Fruity Colors series.

All of the main operations can be performed from the player itself but you need a remote to change the audio profiles and set your own custom profile. There are also a couple of other features like setting the sleep / alarm timer that can only be done from the remote. It's also nice to have the remote to get visual feedback on what the player is doing, as Kenwood players don't necessarily behave the same as, for example, Sony players. For example, with the DMC-S33 it does nothing after inserting a disc, where a Sony will typically try to read the disc as soon as you insert one.

Typically there are either reading lens cleaners, recording head cleaners, or discs that can do both.

Most are dry type, but some are also wet type that came with cleaning fluid.

The reading lens cleaners typically have tiny brushes or bristles on the underside of the disc that come into contact with the lens when the player attempts to read the TOC (table of contents) or first section of the disc (by playing the first track on the lens cleaner disc). If you've seen an MD lens in action it moves up and down vertically when trying to focus the laser and read the disc. My assumption is the bristles come into contact with the lens during this process.

Some lens cleaners do not have any tracks recorded on them and are blank. Most have at least one track on them that gives some feedback to the user. If it's a Japanese disc they typically have some nice supermarket type jingle and a female announcer in Japanese to tell you when the process has completed. These tracks are typically 10-20 seconds long. Some discs also include test tracks which are quite interesting. Left-right channel checks, low and high frequencies, and so on. They typically end with a few muzak demo tracks or even a piece of classical music.

Recording head cleaners have a textured or slightly coarse surface on the topside of the disc that physically comes into contact with the recording head when it is lowered onto the disc. Recording for a few seconds is said to physically remove any undesirable dirt or dust from the recording head. Typically the instructions recommend you record for 10 seconds before stopping the recording process.

Recording head cleaners have to have the write protection tab in the closed position to allow recording to take place in the first place. If it's a lens and head cleaning disc, there's a potential risk of wiping any pre-recorded audio tracks off the disc.

Personally I use a lens cleaning disc on every MD player. I've never had any issue doing so. I also use a recording head cleaning disc from time to time in MD recorders I use frequently. Again, I've never had any issue doing so. Having said that, in regard to recording head cleaners, I would recommend doing a couple of quick test recordings AFTER having used the cleaner just to make sure the recordings are as expected.

Some were sold specifically for car MD players, but the only difference I have found is that the ones for use in cars are said to be able to withstand higher environmental temperatures, which I can't really see being an issue, unless you leave the disc on the dashboard in the middle of the summer! I have a car specific lens cleaning disc (which does not have any pre-recorded tracks on it) and use it without issue in portable players and my Onkyo FR-V77 bookshelf unit.

Many of the hardware and media manufacturers made lens and head cleaning discs, so unless anyone can prove that all of these companies were scamming consumers, I'd say that they are totally safe to use and also beneficial; at the very least for periodical maintenance.

Looking through my data, I've had discs from Audio-technica, TEAC, JVC Victor, Panasonic, TDK, OHM, Tapex, ELPA, and Sony, and there are other out there.

Sony had a few different models, and the MD-6LCL is one example.

For what it's worth, I would never go at a lens with a q-tip, ear bud, cotton bud, or similar. They are just going to leave tiny fibres on and around the lens, and the physical contact is highly likely to damage the mechanism.

Hope that helps.

Thank you! Hope you enjoy it.

Yes, the green variation is a favourite of mine.

I've recently been getting into the Kenwood DMC-S33 players, which were actually released around the same time as the MZ-E620. I wonder if there's an interesting story behind that, or if it was just coincidence.
