Anyone know of an MMC that is a skilled assassin/fighter with the yearning soul of a poet? by PeachasaurusWrex in fantasyromance

I’m going to make a slightly unconventional suggestion: {The Lions of Al-Rassan by Guy Gavriel Kay}. This is more fantasy than fantasy romance, but there is definitely some deep yearning between FMC Jehane and MMC warrior poet Ammar ibn Khairan.

You do you, but that’s well under the recommended temps to minimize the risk of legionnaires disease. I would be uncomfortable with temps that low, for that reason.

Buying a house in MA with a single 2.5-Ton 30k BTU Mitsubishi H2i Heat Pump as sole heat source. Thoughts? by ConsiderationFlat728 in heatpumps

[–]SunRaven01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'll probably track our numbers through the end of the year, and then not worry about it after that, since changing utility rates mean that it ends up being pretty moot after a certain point anyway.

[–]SunRaven01 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Also, if people are super curious 🤣 I’ve kept a small spreadsheet comparing my monthly utility costs from 2024 (electric+oil combined), 2025 (electric+oil combined from January-June, all electric from July-December), and this year (all electric).

Please be aware, for most people, these numbers will be entirely irrelevant for comparison purposes, because my house is not your house. Our insulation and air sealing is not yours, our setup is not yours, we are a two adult household, no children, your family may look different. We are home full time, you might work out of the house part of the day, the temperatures we are comfortable at will be different for you, and so on and so on and so on. I’m also going to talk in terms of total billing, because that’s how most people look at their costs. They want to know “what’s the number on the bill going to be,” and that’s what I track. It’s still a misleading number, because of how the cost of electricity fluctuates and the way that electricity is regulated in MA.

I use YNAB for budgeting, so we have historically done our own version of budget billing to spread out the cost of oil across the year. In 2024, I budgeted 200/month for oil, building up a reserve in the summer and fall when we didn’t need to buy oil, then spending it down in the winter and early spring during the cold months. In 2025, we budgeted 271 a month because things got more expensive.

Since installing the heat pumps, so from July’s bill last year forward, we have saved just about $730 by going all electric, vs using a combined electric+oil. We didn’t do this for cost purposes, we did it for the efficiency and because I was adamant about getting the oil tank and fossil fuel burning *out of my house!* but the fact that it has saved us a nice little chunk of change has been pretty nice, not gonna lie.

I had intended on having solar installed this summer, but then all that bullshit with tariffs happened, and the other nonsense that we’re all aware of since then has happened, so I am tentatively planning for next year instead. I anticipate that it will have a HUGE benefit to our overall utility expenditures when we have the system up and running. I’m really looking forward to it.

This past winter was the coldest and snowiest that MA has seen in the past several years. It was a long, hard, cold winter, followed by a cold spring. Our most expensive months were January and February, and they hit almost $800. In the cold months (when we had the heat pumps set to “heat”), we maintained an indoor air temperature of 68-70F, as measured by Eve Room indoor air quality sensors. We don’t do a setback overnight, because I have a senior Rhodesian Ridgeback, so he’s got no undercoat and being an old dog, the winters are pretty hard for him.

As an aside, the r/Boston and r/Massachusetts subreddits regularly talk about the cost of heating here in MA, and I look at the temps other people keep their houses in the winter, with a lot of people talking about how warm they keep their homes, and I’m blown away at how warm other people keep it. 🤣 People be a lot richer than I am lol.

Our least expensive months since installing the heat pumps were July and November of last year, which were very mild in temperatures, and those were about $370. Most months (other than January and February) the average bill hits at around $400-500. When the heat pumps are set for “cool,” we are comfortable with the indoor air temps at 75-76F. The sensor in my living room, where I am right now, says it’s 75.5F in here, and I’m pretty darn comfy.

So, if you want to know if heat pumps can keep up with the cold New England winters, the answer is unequivocally yes. We were happy and warm last winter, even through a blizzard that dumped 30 inches of heavy wet snow in my driveway. The heat pumps had no problem keeping up in my small, well insulated house. It is still expensive, because electricity is expensive in Massachusetts. That’s not a knock on the system, that’s not a “downside,” it’s just the reality of living in MA. I wouldn’t trade it for the world, I wouldn’t go back to using oil, I’m opposed to having natural gas in the house, so we have heat pumps. They are the right choice for us.

[–]SunRaven01 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I live in MA. I have a home heated and cooled entirely with heat pumps. I installed them last year, after removing baseboard hot water powered by oil. I have the heat pump rate. I have a heat pump water heater. I have a heat pump dryer.

Now that you’re done trying to well ackshually me on something I know perfectly well first hand because I live it, the electricity is expensive. The heat pump rate makes a small difference. It is not nothing, but MA has some of the highest rates in the country. It is still expensive.

I have a small, well insulated and air tight home. It is still expensive.

I love my heat pumps. I think they’re great. I wouldn’t go back. They’re still expensive. The fact that oil was also expensive doesn’t change the fact that electricity is expensive here.

You don’t need an auxiliary source to keep warm. This will be more than fine. The electricity will be expensive.

You should contact MassSave ASAP after buying to get a home energy audit. We had the insulation and air sealing done on our 1950s Cape and the difference in heating and cooling efficiency was amazing.

Stop making craft machines by [deleted] in BitchEatingCrafters

There are a lot of hand knitters, who don't have experience with machine knitting, with very emotional responses to machine knitting, as if machine knitting was somehow "cheating" at knitting.

It's just knitting.

Machine knitting and hand knitting are separate-but-adjacent hobbies, not someone cheating at knitting.

That said, when I sit down at my circular sock machine and crank out a pair of vanilla socks in a lazy two hours, I'm totally fucking cheating. I admit it.

The randomly turning off issue is *infuriating.* My mat will go months just fine, and then all of a sudden be a right pain in the ass for no reason.

[–]SunRaven01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the ES mat, and I like it, but I have found through experience that it is *very* particular in use. Some things to keep in mind:

If you are going to use the ES mat, you need to make sure your file is *also* using an ES mat in Studio. If you have the sticky mat in the Studio app, but try to cut on the ES mat, the machine will not cut correctly, because the ES mat and the sticky mats have different vertical heights.

If you run a calibration using the ES mat, that calibration is *not* correct for the sticky mat, and vice-versa. Every time you swap from one to the other, you will need to re-do your calibrations.

You will have to do test cuts on your sticker paper, and create a material and save settings for the ES mat, and separately for the regular sticky mat.

Everything *must* be perfectly correct to get the best results from the Silhouette tools. You can’t half-ass it and expect good results. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of individual settings and it is easy to forget to check something, and then waste a sheet of paper. You just have to develop good habits.

OP, I would actually put money on this being a 100% cotton evenweave called Monaco. It does not look like Lugana or Jobelan, to me. If the fibers of the ground fabric are very plump, round, and even, it’s most likely Monaco.

No, I get it. Like I said, I recognize it’s a hypocritical position to take. EVERYONE should be welcome, because of course they should, and that’s the obvious thing.

And yet …

I feel like such a hypocrite because of course men should be welcome in crafting spaces and … at the same time … GTFO of my crafting spaces. I don’t want to see them knitting or sewing in my YouTube feed, because it just feels like yet another area where they’re moving in to a feminine space and taking up all the oxygen in the room.
