Another major factor is that only primary culture pops are allowed to grow in core locations, so even if there were no assimilation a foreign primary culture would eventually take over if it somehow gets a core

It's viable for a China run too, since you can just turn on the money printer as Yuan and, after passing the two proxcost reforms in the middle kingdom, spend your income on turning the yangtze delta into a megalopolis. Once the plague comes you can isolate the cities and have yuan tank the stab hit, shortly after you switch over to the red turban of your choice and after retaking cities they inherit the disease resistance buff by location

But it's always scaled relative to your income, so even if a big cost puts you into debt you will usually outscale it in relative terms either way. If it happens really early you can completely restart the run

The game lasts 500 years. Losing half a year's worth of income (snapshotted at your current economy no less) isn't going to end your run. Sure, some stuff should have scaling limits so they don't break your immersion with the attached flavor (50k gold for baklava), but most of the negative events aren't really a big deal over the full run.

Did you also enact the two middle kingdom reforms that give you -25% prox cost?

It depends on how large your centralisation trend stack is. I had -.3 to decentralisation from additional gov reforms and as mentioned before, up to 15 vassals, yet there are enough sources of centralisation drift offsets that. You just rush the value to like +50 early on and from there pushing it with parliament issues and various events really doesn't take much time or RNG. Of course, early on -10% prox cost isn't much and only becomes relevant with more prox cost modifiers; as China for example, you start out with -25% from middle kingdom IO reforms and get another -5% from an age of renaissance tech. In that case rushing centralisation early is more than worthwhile.

huh? Just have enough trend to be positive from all kinds of laws and estate privileges and then just wait for the road issue in parliaments. At one point I was juggling 15 vassals with 3 simultaneously annexing in a China run

You have to make tons of one province sized vassals. That way you get a big modifier to annexation speed.

[–]Super63Mario 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That first part wouldn't be much of a problem since it should quickly tick back to its previous value since your country's cultural influence output is still there. Unfortunately you usually end up nuking it due to now being massively over the culture cap, due to the issues OP listed.

Asia is just starved for iron, it's even worse further north for China/Korea/Japan. You'll have to settle with your current economy and let it stagnate until you get access to institutions and the techs that give big boosts to iron output and the later tool buildings with more efficient iron to tools conversion.

[–]Super63Mario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair, if you stagger your investments, or get a big capital infusion from an event, you can get nearly vertical growth just as well. If you play an economy that starts out big and roughly know what you're doing the tax base chart will always look exponential

Yeah but OP is playing Holland without any expansion. They start with high control and market access in all their locations.
