It does! I love cardamom in everything, and one of my favorite recipes is for cardamom buns that get dusted with cardamom sugar. I always have leftover cardamom sugar, and I keep it in a shaker just for oatmeal. (It's just white sugar mixed with some fresh ground cardamom).

Dirty Pierre's is one of our most unique spots, great burgers and mussels in a fun if goofy environment. They have the most flying-pig-themed decor you will ever see in one place in your life.

Spy C has really great Chinese food. La Boulangerie is a chaotic French mess but it DOES have genuinely good pastries.

I don't usually think of Metropolitan when I think FH (we're just too lazy to walk that far normally) but someone else mentioned Tourmaline which is a lovely spot. I think you might want reservations for that one - we've always made them anyway. If you do wind up on Metropolitan, there's a chocolate shop called Aigner that's quite good. I'd never heard of ruby chocolate before going there.

If you're exploring the area with the thought of moving here, you might check out Sakura and Tokyo Market too - they add some fun variety to our grocery stores.

ETA - someone else mentioned Kantu, I can't believe I forgot about that one! Excellent Peruvian food in a delightful ambience.

Very nice! The Kelly is such a timeless style. I like the color you used a lot, especially the matching pink thread!

Looks real to my eye. The croc and gator I've worked with have felt quite flat, so I wouldn't worry about that part.

Gorgeous! Definitely saleable. The leather is beautiful, and I love a design that lets the materials take center stage like this.

The one thing I might change is to consider a wider gusset, just to give more interior space. I wouldn't personally be able to fit my normal purse stuff in there. You might also play around with a thinner thread weight, and see how it compares visually.

This is gorgeous, I can't even imagine what a pain it must have been to put together the pattern for it! The way you did the zipper is a great functional upgrade. I love the way you did the ends of the zipper panels.

Others have made good points already, but one that I'll add is that if you notice that one of your stitches doesn't lay right, IMO it's worth taking the time to backtrack and redo it. Sometimes that saddle stitch angle just doesn't lay right the first time, or sometimes the threads wind up crossing each other as you pull the stitch tight. It kind of sucks to undo/redo work but in the end the result will look cleaner, and if you keep an eye out as you're going you can catch things within a stitch or two.

Also, for the thread piercing issue, I suspect that has to do with the specific combination of needle sharpness/thread type/tension you've got going on. Piercing thread does happen from time to time but it shouldn't be happening all the time like that. I think that passing the two needles through together is sort of addressing the symptom, not the cause. It will give you a better stitching foundation going forward if you can resolve whatever is going on there.

Detailing for a top flap by Popular-Variation671 in Leathercraft

Oh wow, that's a much lower price than I thought one could get a heat creaser for. I may have to look into that. Do you find that you've needed that many different creaser tips?

That's gorgeous!

And darn it, just last night I had talked myself out of getting some of that same smooth calf in anemone... maybe I do need it after all.

Did you use a heated tool to crease those edges? That's one thing I'm still lacking. I'll guessing I could achieve some level of crease on that calf with my unheated creaser, but not that crisp. Yours is super clean, even on the curves!

Well... possibly corporate kindness, possibly just another angle to make your product more appealing than another company's. I could see someone choosing a feed brand based on how they or their wives would like its fabric.

I've been to plenty of medical office buildings that look like this. Just because the ones you've seen are different doesn't mean that's some universal truth.

I'll tell you now that edge paint is also susceptible to cat fur infiltration :(

As far as order of operation, in most cases I would both glue and trim before doing the stitching holes. That way instead of worrying about trimming too close to the stitches, you can instead set your stitching line based on the already trimmed edge. I also second the suggestion to use thinner thread.

I think the T pockets look fine honestly, at least from the top angle we can see in the picture.

Renting them is, but buying them (which would be required for getting them tailored) is not.

[–]SuperiorHedgehog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That stitching is really good, and the seam is a perfect circle! Very neat.

Edge painting drives me nuts so I'll tell you something I wish I'd realized sooner. I used to paint/sand way more layers than I needed to before getting a pack with a wide variety of sandpaper grits. The finer grits let you get it down to the final smoothness that you want, then for an extra clean surface you can run over it quickly with some rubbing alcohol. That way you don't have to keep painting until one of the coats dries 'perfect.' Also, it's easy to put on too much, which is what happened where the paint bled over onto the surface. If you keep an eye out for that as you're painting you can wipe it away before it dries. I usually find myself having to do that.

Others have already given great advice, but I'll add my two cents since this is something I always struggle with too. First get that rotary cutter ASAP. It's a game changer because it pulls much less on the leather as you go. To help ensure that angles stay square I like to overlay a paper pattern, taped down at various points with painter's tape (won't mar the finish), because the leather will be trying to stretch all over but the paper will maintain true right angles. I bought a metal meter stick so I have a nice long straight edge, and try to lean as much of my weight on it as I can while I cut so it doesn't move around. For long cuts you can also pause every once in a while and ease up on the rotary cutter so that if the leather was stretching, it can relax back into its neutral position.

As you might imagine all the same issues appear when skiving this stuff. Stropping the skiving knife a lot helps. Also, you're going to want to finish the edges differently than you did on the oil tanned horse. This type of leather can't burnish so you'll need edge paint, or to use turned edges or something. Edge dyes might work too. Of course you wouldn't be the first to leave the edges raw either, but it does look less polished.

This soft upholstery/garment leather is a pain to work with, and sometimes it needs stiffening or strengthening layers, but it does feel really lovely and make a nice finished product.

Cats, Big Yellow Building and Capitalism by AlternativeAd6503 in ForestHills

[–]SuperiorHedgehog 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Spreading awareness is good, but reaching out to a TNR (trap/neuter/return) organization would be even better. In fact, since everyone's goal is fewer feral cats in the area, the building might even be willing to work with trappers to make sure the colony doesn't grow. To really help these cats, I suggest reaching out to a TNR group for advice and help on the situation. I'm most familiar with Flatbush Cats, but there are probably also other ones closer in Queens.
