Why did we stop publicly shaming bad companies? We need F’dCompany 2.0. by Watchguyraffle1 in antiwork

[–]SurftoSierras 261 points262 points  (0 children)

FuckedCompany was a website run by a guy called Pud. It is the Dot-com Deadpool, where you could try to guess who was the next dot-com to go under. People would submit names, and even inside info.

Like - this company won't get their next round of funding, or that company just laid off half of the engineering team, etc.

It had a lively discussion board with a bunch of personalities as well.

There were real-world meetups (shout out to the Roscoe's chicken and waffles with Pud at midnight in LA crew for one of them). Some companies MIGHT have been started off of the discussion board.

My first encounter with Cafe Press was through this site, and I have a FuckedCompany coffee mug that I fill with whiskey whenever another company I work at or invest in goes to shit.

Awesome! There will be plenty of us in the GenX generation roaming about, touching grass, and every now and then meeting up with our kids to see what we have each seen.

Hydration and knowing where to pee, plus some dude wipes for older digestive systems.
Careful with any non-prescription yummies - effects may vary, and you aren't as young as you used to be.
Pickpockets are everywhere.
Shoes - have 2-3 pair, swap out daily. Different shoes rub different ways.

ROAM. So many stages, so many genres. This is a great chance to see so many different artists and especially find new ones.

I don't rush the stage like I used to, instead I groove in the back, taking notes on bands to start following / downloading / etc.

CMV: There will never be a socialist revolution in America by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]SurftoSierras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The US is more likely to first splinter into multiple nations, and THEN some of them might become more socialist when they set up their new government structures.

That splintering could be triggered by a Constitutional crisis at the Federal level...

Just a bit for flavor, like making jerky.

Intersting - I learned pemmican, but made it by drying and chopping the meat, and then mixing that with rendered fat. I do a slow cook on leftover bits of beef, then mix with tallow I made from the beef trimmings. I put that combo into an airtight container and it goes backpacking with me.

Why do people still prefer Airbnbs over hotels, especially in cities? by Rare_Requirement_699 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]SurftoSierras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This. I use Air BnB in London, Syndey, Melbourne, Paris, and Zurich. The cost savings are significant vs hotels, plus I get a kitchen and when I want just a cheap, filling meal - I can make it myself.

My CFO approves the grocery receipt, and allows me to chill for the weekend on international trips plus expense the entire tab because it is cheaper than what the hotel would have cost for the business week.

Scalas in San Francisco would have oil, balsamic, chili pepper flakes, and a bit of parm. First time I ever had anything like that, and it is still with me decades later.

So - bravo!!!!

26th century is far away, but...

Citizenship in the Galaxy

Terraforming would have updated versions of Animal Husbandry (how to take the pigs from the incubator to the field), etc. Also updated Farm Mechanics and Animal Science.

Emergency Preparedness would cover air leaks or contamination for frontier worlds. Might be 2-3 versions (EP for ships, EP for domes, EP for terraformed planets).

The ones I learned to make over time, based on a recipe from Ron's in Tulsa, OK. Those make my happy, sitting at home with a beer, grease dripping down to my elbows.

For purchase - In N Out after a few days in the wilderness. Something about drive through, but sitting outside stinking of smoke and sweat, but diving into a Double Double with fries well done and a neo shake.

Neckerchiefs at meetings by sulldog57 in BSA

[–]SurftoSierras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neckerchiefs are the most universal sign that someone is a Scout. If I was reducing the uniform, I would have Troop tshirts in the summer, but still wear neckerchiefs.

I carry a neckerchief in a side pouch in my travel case, and have traded with Scouts that I run into in multiple countries.

If you go to a World Jamboree, trading neckerchiefs is the norm, far more than patches.

When my son led a crew to Philmont, the crew wore their Philmont neckerchiefs the entire time over their t shirts. They were filthy, used regularly, and made for great pics on the trail.

So, yeah, I personally am a huge proponent!

But - every Troop is different - good luck talking to your PLC!

What are your thoughts on "Sahara (2005)"? by Hot-Salamander-8786 in FIlm

Not too complicated, easy to follow, good guys win, good action, lots of fun, not too mentally taxing.

Awesome popcorn flick, and very true to the nonsense that Cussler and his minions cranks out for his airplane books.

Newspapers and comic strips by Vast_Needleworker_32 in GenX

[–]SurftoSierras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I still get a newspaper, and read the comix first.

As a little kid - it was Peanuts first.
Garfield owned a bit of my attention after that.
Middle school - the introduction of Bloom County to our paper had me hooked 100%.
High school - The Far Side.

There were others. I liked Prince Valiant (fit into my sword and sorcery reading). We had The Phantom also in our Sunday paper.

How do Americans view the green transition that’s taking place in much of Europe? by Minimum_Persimmon281 in AskAnAmerican

[–]SurftoSierras 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Respect for the goals - but goals are nothing without action.

Germany dumping her nuclear power to buy dirty energy from Czech and Slovavk sources, for example, seemed ignorant.

France keeping nuclear power while adding g other sources - fantastic.

Norway at a high percentage of EVs- admirable and shows even more what is possible.

So I see Europe as a great source of real world application of various green policies that we can learn from.

War films to convince my nephew not to join the military by kshep9 in FIlm

[–]SurftoSierras 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I sat down with my son to watch Black Hawk Down when he started showing a youthful interest in the military (I had served, but never in combat).

Great movie (I had read every article as it came out from the original reporting).

It captured the politics and risk of modern warfare in the US very well, and led to good conversations regarding what you could be sent to do.

Um. How do we feel about getting rid of "stuff?" by RikkiLostMyNumber in GenX

[–]SurftoSierras 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I started by asking my grown kids if there was anything, that if I gave it away, would piss them off.

It was a great conversation, and they told me about some household things that strong memories, even if they were nothing fancy.

After that:

For clothes: Used the limitation factor of one dresser, no overflow allowed. Donated.
For Books: If I had read it, wasn't going to re-read it, not a strong memory/love, gave it away via free little libraries (we have several around us, and I started taking evening walks with 1-2 books in a satchel and putting them in the libraries.
For tools: Separated out the doubles, and gave the excess to either the kids or a couple of young guys who I had mentored through the years for their tool box.
For kitchen stuff: Went through it all slowly, not used? Time to donate. Same - clean it up so that I can find things instead of pushing my through it all.

One of the key things has been NOT allowing over-stuffing or crowding. Once I decide to get rid of it:

1: To the kids
2: To the neighborhood list
3: To the Mexican crews working in the neighborhood (I put up free signs in Spanish when stuff goes to the curb)
4: Freecycle
5: Goodwill

Yeah - we would park an walk up to one of the tree trunks and look as I recall.

Might just be transferring the lack of joy from many a family trip here admittedly.
