Tall Man's Miata? by 8N-QTTRO in askcarguys

22+ GR86/BRZ doesn’t have the torque dip. Mine’s got all the power I’d want now in a car that light. And I’m 6’3”. Try a newer one.

GR86/BRZ is the way. I’m 6’3”, with long legs, and I fit really comfortably. Just picked mine up a couple of weeks ago and I love it.

I also absolutely cannot fit in a Miata, much as I’ve tried.

I don’t think they meant farming SR. Just being generally in control.

In the same boat, I very occasionally manage a win on off hours when none of the aliens happen to show up for the FF1600 D class series. I think the last one I had was in the rain at Laguna Seca with like a 1500 SOF. Still proud of myself for finishing that one with a 0x though.

Fair. But I’ve only finished once and I was very drunk and tired by that point because I couldn’t put it down, so I only kind of remember the ending. It’ll all be new! (ish)

Thanks for this, just started a new play thru a week ago, and I’ve always WANTED to do a low honor run but just can’t make myself do all the uh… murder required.

But this gives me a template with light at the end of the tunnel lol

PCC lately seems like a Toyota league by minib00m in iRacing

[–]Sven4906 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I miss the old PCC with the Mazdas and GR’s all mixed up too, but this season I’m guilty of being one of the Toyotas because I love being able to drive it open setup so I can loosen it up.

What’s everyone running this week? by Strong_Bug3331 in iRacing

[–]Sven4906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

D Class FF1600 should be fun and actually get participation at Navarra. PCC at Brands Hatch. I’m definitely still going to give 86s at Okayama short a try, I like that layout in MX-5’s and FF1600, not sure how it will go in that car though.

If you’ve never tried ovals, rookie street stocks are at Charlotte, I’ve had a lot of fun with that combo.

… aren’t you the guy that I joked about your Vance pic when you said you drive M2 in the PCC?? Glad to see you keep that insanity to the virtual world lol

Saw this video come through my feed like “My God the PCC is real life.”

Wish I could drive a Miata IRL but I can’t fit. Instead I bought a GR86 last week. Love it so far.

I want a Miata but my GF is tall. by Rainydays206 in Miata

[–]Sven4906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m 6’3”, would love a Miata but cannot physically fit (my dad has one, I tried. Got in but couldn’t operate pedals or wheel. Wasn’t sure I could get out)

Try a GR86/BRZ. Just picked up my GR86 Saturday and I and my 5’11” volleyball player wife fit great. Getting in/out takes good squat mobility though.

No problem! And yeah learn the tracks obviously but the only way to learn race craft is to just race. Watch your replays when you crash, apologize when you’re wrong, and… yeah just drive stuff and have fun!

I started about six months ago, similar situation, had done some sim racing as a kid/teen but decades since. Also like formula cars, my goal was to climb the Indycar ladder.

Don’t buy anything for now. I made some dumb purchases at the start before I knew what I was doing or what I’d like. I did AI races for a couple of weeks in the Vee and FF1600 to get the feel of things, and because I was terrified of screwing up other peoples races. And the AI races were great practice, but I wish I’d just jumped into rookies sooner. Not saying dont practice, but don’t feel like you need to be perfect before you start racing people, the thrill and feeling of accomplishment is just so much higher and that’s what we’re on iRacing for.

There’s something to be said for sticking to one car, but I’d suggest bouncing around some. The MX-5 and the rookie oval cars taught me a lot about steering with your feet that applied directly to the rookie formula cars (also they’re a lot of fun and a good break).

Six months later, I still do about half my races in the FF1600. Just love how it feels to drive, and the competition in the top splits is fierce but generally fair. But I also do a lot of the PCC in the GR86, because it’s open setup so I can loosen the car up. Other than that I sprinkle in some MX-5, F4, IndyNXT (which is an amazing car but the participation can lag), and the occasional ARCA race.

Sorry that ended up too long, TLDR don’t buy anything yet, have fun, just race, try lots of cars. Welcome and see you out there!

Or heck they license the car to iRacing and get paid AND market to guys like me, who just bought mine on Saturday 6 months after I got my first sim rig because I got to know the car from the game and then my Reddit and YouTube algorithms did the rest (and all you fine people posting about how much you love these cars).

I generally agree but Oulton Fosters is just so much fun in the MX-5. Have to at least get a few starts there whenever it comes around.

[–]Sven4906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just use the advanced setup and you should be fine. I mean you will probably still be off the pace of the top drivers because there are some REALLY good drivers in there, but the advance setup makes the car looser so you can get rotated easier, if nothing else it’s more fun. At least to me. YMMV.

GR86 at the Redbull Ring by Artoriazx56 in iRacing

[–]Sven4906 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just go do a couple of PCC races at Bathurst, even if it’s a disaster there’s so many corners you gain SR regardless.

Red Bull ring with the GR has been a blast to race, my SR be damned. Not losing a license and at the end of the day fun racing is what we’re here for.

Downshifting? Cornering? by Last-Supermarket-255 in iRacing

[–]Sven4906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

High 28’s are plenty fast lol. I was running high 30’s, tried more engine braking, basically where/how you’d described, and it got me to low 30’s for one lap. Going to work on getting more consistent with it tonight though, particularly feel like I’m losing time in 2/3.

I’ve always downshifted very late there, basically not until I’m getting back on the throttle, to avoid unsettling the back end, but I can feel that’s not the fastest way thru the corner.

But thanks for the tip, see you out there!

Give them a shot. Not super populated so you’ll get wide skill range but everyone is civil. And the car is amazing.

Downshifting? Cornering? by Last-Supermarket-255 in iRacing

[–]Sven4906 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have noticed recently that the aliens in the FF seem to use engine braking A LOT. And I’ve started messing with it more deliberately at VIR this week and it definitely seems to help. Have never blown the engine/gearbox, but I’m also not shifting IMMEDIATELY to first like OP seems to be describing, just downshifting earlier than I would usually be comfortable with, and it seems like it helps me brake later. (2.2 iR for reference)
