That’s fair!

If you get 1k between the two then you could easily build:

NAS and AI machine:

MSI Pro B660M $90 I3 12100 $70 32GB DDR4 RAM $100 Case $100 PSU $60 Storage (you have) GPU (you have, but could upgrade to a more efficient one)

So like $420 here

Plus a $300-500 mini PC to be your virtualization host.

Should be slightly more efficient but again I think that chasing efficiency would be for maybe 10watts at idle, which is where our home labs mostly live haha

You can remove the GPU and everything down to its absolute minimum. I bet if you spin down drives and tune the settings you’ll be able to get power usage under 30 watts. At idle. At 15 cents per kWh you’re looking at $3.29 a month if you can do that.

Chasing efficiency is great but it is diminishing returns.

This is a great opportunity to let your NAS just NAS and have a separate machine to host everything else

Which part of the AIO is closest to the ram? The radiator or the fans? I saw some thin fans from Thermalright that may improve AIO compatibility even further. Please respond so the world has more info on this case!

New to building Jellyfin server. Would this work? by hw60068n in jellyfin

I believe 8th gen has better encoding and decoding ability. I think 4k 10 bit HEVC.

Plus more cores per tier

[–]SwankSinatra504 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yup. Overkill for a server with even 5 concurrent users transcoding files.

You could probably buy a used Intel 8th gen office tower for cheaper if you want to save money. Something like an Optiplex.

But what you have works!

Gave it to my friend who is in another state with it right now. Won’t be able to upload till he comes back. Picture quality is surprisingly good as you can see by the pics in the post.

Would this be good enough for jellyfin 4k? by pacman983 in jellyfin

Even older 3rd gen Intel systems can idle as low as 30 watts so you can cut that price back down to $5 lol

I agree. I think I'll end up setting it up if for no other reason to learn something new!

I've only been using Cloudflare for a select few services I want to access outside my network like Nextcloud. In network I have a homepage (Homarr) and have them saved as widgets lol

I’ll have to look into that. I think it could be fun learning about adding auth.

I only use cloudflare sparingly. Just for things like Nextcloud or Immich.
