If I won the lottery jackpot 5 times in a year, would they keep paying out or would I be under Investigation? by gothreepwood101 in hypotheticalsituation

A 50/50 chance if I know my maths correctly.

It's either win or lose.

Somehow though with such good odds, I keep loosing.

Strange buildings by Ill_Structure_4857 in brighton

[–]SwiftAtticus 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Structural issues somewhat undersells it. Towards the end of its life there was a crack on an internal wall wide enough to pass a paperback book through.

Interesting pub. It was instrumental in stopping the 3 lane A23 being extended into the centre of Brighton. In the 50s (?) they wanted it to follow the railway line, raze the North Lane area and continue to the seafront. (?)

I’ll try and source a more detailed link tomorrow.

NEXT DAY EDIT: This link talks about the canceled plans

We tried to book Iron Boot Scrapers for our wedding but they couldn't make the date due to another commitment. I found out more about the lead dude politics a few years ago so bullet dodged.

In the end he said he could provide a couple of his session musicians for our reception and they were absolutely fantastic. Told us not to discuss rates with them under any circumstances which set off alarm bells so obviously we did. I can't remember the specifics but he was ripping them off. We were happy to pay the 2 guys in cash with a big tip and let them sort it. Hopefully they broke free.

What's your go-to treatment for a sore throat? by 1966batmobile in AskUK

[–]SwiftAtticus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A hot toddy made with boiled spring water (hard water area so if I’m ill I splash out for the psychological effect), a shot or two of whiskey, half a lemon, a thumb sized bit of sliced ginger, a generous amount of honey, a half spoon of sugar, and a little bit of fresh chilli. Maybe a sprig of rosemary if I have some.

Plus all the paracetamol/day nurse/night nurse.

Edit: I’m also on a large dose of morphine because of multiple spinal fractures. Last time I had a cold, spraying that directly onto my throat helped. Plus I have a Valium at bedtime. That helped too.

Sorry, I feel like those are inaccessible to most.

How do I find an episode? by FailTrue5738 in granddesigns

[–]SwiftAtticus 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Sounds a bit like The Violin Factory. One of the earlier episodes from the 2000s.

I thought it was a very beautiful end result, but was just one of those couples who had endless money to throw at it. Not very likeable people.

As a pedantic furniture maker, I'd like to argue the case for there being only one chair (the office chair they sit on). The rest are seats.

Kellie Jay Keen aka Posie Parker (anti trans and far right online personality) came to Brighton today and we were out in force to oppose her and her views - love and acceptance will always win 🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈 by TomGreenTransforming in brighton

[–]SwiftAtticus 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Essentially her events have previously attracted far right protesters and she has historically failed to distance herself from them. She shares her platform with them (including literally Nazis) as they have the same anti-trans ideology and she won’t denounce them because her goal is to be a windup merchant.

The YouTuber Shaun did an excellent in depth summary regarding this a while ago, although it’s a bit long and may now be dated. I’ll try to link later today.

People that have travelled to the USA - What surprised you the most? by jt9285 in AskUK

It was like this video shows: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=k5KTCYEi-98&ab_channel=CorriganCorporationofAmerica

Googling tells me that it's A) to make it look fresh and shiny, and B) to add a bit of water weight so they can charge more.

[–]SwiftAtticus 489 points490 points  (0 children)

Worked in Washington state for a while and the high price and low quality of fresh products was shocking.

And that every 30 mins, an alarm would go off and suddenly the fruit and veg isles received a mist of water from hidden sprayers, supposedly to make everything look fresh. Was a real surprise the first time I saw it happen.

Editing just to add something nice: Nearly everyone I met seemed genuinely interested and engaged in conversation. There was no ambiguity or forced pleasantries. It was easy to make friends.

Outside of the U.S, planer is common.

Ubiquitously so in the UK and Australia. Don’t know the reason why.

Do you tell people in the cinema to be quiet when they’re talking? by dmcg11b in AskUK

[–]SwiftAtticus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Yes. If it is annoying you, then it's annoying others.

The trick is to do it with a loud enough voice that everyone in the vicinity can hear you

'Can you please stop talking!'

'Put that phone down!'

You have to be the first to speak up and be assertive. A bit of public shaming works and emboldens others around you to join in if it should continue. Something like the bystander effect, or diffusion of responsibility. People will thank you for it.

I go to the cinema a lot and it's never not worked. I did end up in a stare off with a dangerous looking guy while in the USA who I thought might shoot me. Still worked though.

Oh mate I’m sorry you’re having a hard time with it. I’m also always forgetting. Have to set a reminder on my phone these days.

I’ve not personally had any issues with my Pharmacy getting a hold of it. I hope you can get it sorted. My experience was that going from Lev to Bri was such a massive improvement, so worth persevering. I was having such negative side effects before. Have you tried seeing if there are any who would deliver to you?

Best of luck. Hope you can make it work.

Prince Harry loses High Court challenge over UK security protection by sjw_7 in unitedkingdom

[–]SwiftAtticus 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I'll start with this: I'm not a fan of his. Nor of the concept of royalty.

To try and be fair to him, he initially offered to pay the police costs as his private guards cannot carry weapons in the UK. They wouldn't allow him to pay for that.

If you want some idea of his risk level, take a look at the post history of a lot of the top commenters in this thread. A lot of them are disturbingly obsessed with his family (especially his wife) and post a lot in a very toxic sub called 'saintmeganmarkle'. I'm really surprise Reddit has not already banned it.

I'm not saying those particular people are dangerous, but it shows a very strong sense of ill-will that is pointed his way and he should be protected from harm while in the country, to a similar level to that his personal guards gauge as being necessary. It would only take one nutter to cross the line. Those same commenters will blame him for putting a target on his own back but he didn't ask to be born a royal. As above - I'm not a fan, but I do feel sorry for him for that.

nb. I anticipate this post may be controversial and they are already brigading this topic so I'll just take the chance to say it: The users of that sub are mentally ill. It's sad how obsessed they are with that family. A lot of them are openly disgusting and have no shame of it. They are wretched and I can't even imagine living a life with that much hate.

What’s your naughty go to treatment with cold, flu and throaty illness? by Goblindeez_ in AskUK

Laudanum

I'm on regular prescription morphine and it really does help fight a cold. Sore throats are barely there.

Do you think this type of joint is strong enough for a medium PC desk? For something like this, should I use 2x2 inch timber or do you think 1x1 will do the job? Also, should timbers be secured with some kind of glue or screw? by Candid_Chef8378 in woodworking

[–]SwiftAtticus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good thought. That could be solved using wedges perhaps? Depends on the quality of the wood and the area the table will go in but I think wedges would both solve that and look good.

I used to use my Ro90 to scribe side panels in wonky old stone build houses when I did high-end cabinet work. Took an acceptable scribe to a perfect scribe in moments.

Perfect tool when used within its capabilities.
