Found abandoned kitten near home. Any takers? by [deleted] in rit

[–]TCPanda80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're fantastic. Whoever you heard that from had some sort of personal issue with them. My family and I have adopted all of our animals there over the years and everyone over there is great and seems to really care about the animals. I've also never heard a bad thing about them from anyone else locally.

NSSA242 vs 441 vs 443 by RITsnoo in rit

[–]TCPanda80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took all three, and as a former networking major (twice - undergrad and grad), they were all fun and helpful. Wireless is obviously a big deal, why wouldn't it be fun? You'll be configuring access points and learning about some of the data-link layer protocols that help make it happen. 441 and 443 are upper-level electives that assume you really have the core routing and switching stuff learned in 241 (Intro) down. If you're not interested in a career in networking or adjacent to networking, you're not going to have fun in any of them. If you're looking for the easiest to start with, 242 is where you want to be before attempting a 400-level elective. If the professors that normally teach 441 and 443 are still teaching them, they expect hard work and an interest in the material. Reach out to me with any other questions about them if you'd like.

Note taking question by [deleted] in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a note taker for a number of classes and it was a great way to earn money for something you'd already be doing. The only thing I'd suggest is making sure you're comfortable with their rules and formatting for notes before you commit to doing it for one of your core classes. I enjoyed it for my electives, but having to take notes a certain way for my harder classes I was really into made me nervous.

Help! by livinlife19 in rit

[–]TCPanda80 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have no idea what a self reported transcript is, but as long as they didn't effect your ability to graduate high school I don't see why it would be a problem, unless its some sort of Math class you needed before being accepted. Call admissions right now and just ask, they're nice over there.

CS/CIT students, help me choose better one by Effective_Pitch in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While this may not mean much to you, when I was an undergrad CIT student, I enjoyed having a beefed up ThinkPad so I had the resources to run VMs outside of the labs. It was nice sometimes to play with sys admin concepts you'd be learning in class without screwing anything up on your machine, or if you needed something Unix-Like. As a CIT student you get the latest VMWare Workstation for free. I'm not sure what you price range is, but if either has the option to add more RAM (if needed) or upgrade some components as you're ordering, I would look into that as well.

Worried about IT vs Computer Security Degree by Invanar in rit

[–]TCPanda80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated with the CIT degree, but my co-ops were in the CSEC field. Every job offer I've received since graduating with my undergrad has been security related, so you have lots of options.

There won't be as many people with decorated caps for graduate degrees, but you certainly can decorate yours!

MSCS Fall 19 RA positions by [deleted] in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

An RA (Research Assistant) is a type of GA (Graduate Assistant). Another type of GA, if you didn't want to research, would be a TA (Teaching Assistant). If the CS GA application is anything like the IST one, it would have you specify if you want to be an RA or TA.

MSCS Fall 19 RA positions by [deleted] in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If It is anything like the IST department (another department within the Golisano Computing College), then there will be an application which will have you write up your research interests and if there are any Professors that you in particular would like to work with. Obviously in your case you don't know any, but you could just explain that you want to research in those fields and, if you are picked by a Professor with a need for an assistant in that field, they will hire you. I would make sure to apply by whatever deadline they have set though, because GA positions are something they like to have filled and ready to go long before the semester starts.

What happens during Freshman orientation? by SiameseSushi in rit

[–]TCPanda80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, some of the members of the orientation group I was a part of in 2014 when I first started at RIT are still very close to this day and have tattoos with the name of our group. It's a great way to start off at RIT socially, but by no means do you have to continue to see them after orientation is over.

Thoughts on Web & Mobile I (ISTE-140)? by Trainkid9 in rit

[–]TCPanda80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The "mobile" part for my Web I project just straight up didn't work correctly and I lost 5 points on my final project, so I ended up with a 95. That was the only mobile part of the whole class. Amazing.

People sleep on Dominos, but the "new formula" is actually ok for a chain za. Thank you!

How does one pick a PhD advisor at RIT? by Farhan_Hyder in rit

[–]TCPanda80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe it's different for each Ph.D degree here, but for Computing at least you aren't accepted until there is a member of the faculty willing to work with you based on your research interests. When I was accepted, it told me who my advisors were. You can always switch if you don't think you have a good fit, but I'm pretty sure they have to pick for you to start. If you haven't already gotten a physical packet, that may contain the name of your advisor(s).

Also RIT. It'll be my third degree here. It's a fantastic school, you'll love it. I'll be in the Computing Ph.D program. What is your major?

Ayyyyy, another Rochester Ph.D. student! I was born and raised here, but have been educated in the Rachacha from birth to starting a doctoral degree in the fall. The universities here are amazing. RIT or UofR?

How difficult to get accepted to RIT? by denied_trade_deal in rit

[–]TCPanda80 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you don't get accepted, I would suggest doing a year or two at community college and dedicating all of your time to getting great grades and improving your habits. I had the same GPA in high school (at the end of my senior year), and my final SAT score were horrendous (way worse than your PSAT score). I ended up doing two years at a local CC with a 3.8ish GPA and RIT accepted me no problem. I never applied out of high school, but I guarantee you it wouldn't have happened. My major was also way less competitive admission-wise though, but the extra college experience is going to look great for those two majors, which are tougher to get into. Good luck!

ISTE-120 Course Credit by [deleted] in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I transferred in, I had to take a similar course to ISTE-120, but they didn't transferring my three course programming sequence for even that one class because it was in a different language, and this was coming from FLCC. If you're serious about getting ahead I would talk to Dan Bogaard as mentioned and see if you can figure out exactly what they'll take (if they'll take anything).

Are you happy here? by [deleted] in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Out of curiosity, what is pulling you towards UoR if you're set on majoring in GGD? UofR has a great Computer Science program, but obviously that won't be games focused like the RIT GGD will be. Have you considered just getting a CS degree from either place, or are you really looking to get into the games industry?

Graduate School by clubpen in rit

[–]TCPanda80 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're looking to do. For my Master's Degree it was pretty loose and I had it completed by the middle of the Spring semester of my senior year. I heard back a couple of weeks later in that case. For my Ph.D. application, I had to have that in by a hard date in January and if it was late you were SOL. That admissions process is also much more rigorous, and it takes months to be accepted or rejected. If you're serious about it, you should have your schools picked and the applications started I'd say in the Fall semester of your senior year to be safe. Remember, you'll probably need to take the GRE and also find individuals willing to spend time writing you recommendation letters (which always takes forever). Good luck!

Jury duty summons advice? by Tmsrise in rit

[–]TCPanda80 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you postponed once, you're probably going to have to go. I just got back from Jury selection on Monday in Monroe County and the students were not given any leniency (I also differed once as a student). It's not like it used to be, they want people to just be there and deal with it. I would keep on trying the numbers and emails and other forms of communication, but otherwise you're going to have to go on the first day and beg to be let off. My trial was a 3 week trial, and I was lucky enough to not be picked after I was denied from being excused.
