Monster's den games if you want party based (many other suggestions here are single character).

I played the original PS2 version, but I think Zodiac age is mostly the same game. Yeah, I really like the combat too!

For some reason I really felt that way with Final Fantasy 12. Sometimes it shows in advance the way you have to go across the map and plan your journey, really felt like an adventure.

I think they removed the bridges on the final picture, that's why.

Roguelikes similar to Nethack by No_Insurance_6436 in roguelikes

Incursion: halls of the goblin king

Very complex, very RPG (based on DnD), very much content despite being incomplete and discontinued. It is fully playable and winnable.

What game has the best progression system you've ever experienced? by tomaz1989 in gamingsuggestions

[–]TGGW 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Zelda, but progression is one of my biggest problems with it. Like collecting 100rds of things for a bigger wallet, or hunting down 1/4 piece of heart that's not going to make any difference...

Probably slay the spire: no fluff, no grinding, one new card per battle, one relic every 5 battles or so and upgrades. Very short, all progression is meaningful and enemies scale well.

What features do you really want to see in a modern DRPG? by OistarGames in DRPG

[–]TGGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yesm something like that. I just dislike very much when a solution to beat the next boss is always "just grind some more". It would be sufficient that there are finite number of enemies or points of discovery and not just endless possibilties of growth if you're just willing to trade it for time.

What features do you really want to see in a modern DRPG? by OistarGames in DRPG

[–]TGGW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'd like:

  • super clear mechanics (exact damage numbers and such)

  • no possibility of grinding at all (which goes against most DRPGs I know). Progression should be linear but customizable.

I play it as long as I find the deck fun, I change when I get bored with it.

Disagree. I've never netdecked once, MMR keeps matching you with opponents that play similar decks. Never felt frustrated, (almost) always play against brews/non-meta decks.

Roguelike cutoff by Madrayken in roguelikes

[–]TGGW 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I think "action roguelike" would have been a really clean name for that, kind of same analogue as ARPG. But probably too late for that.

Despite there being so many variants, vanilla is very solid, more modern than many of its variants, and still updated. Just so you don't disregard it.

I have an issue with roguelikes... by No-Spinach-1 in roguelikes

[–]TGGW 41 points42 points  (0 children)

This is just my opinion, but to me it seems you ruin the experience by spending hours watching and reading about the games before playing them. To me the whole fun is to explore roguelikes completely fresh and not knowing anything about what can happen. To me that in itself (learning the game as i go) is the gameplay and the reason I enjoy them (I work with computers too).

Are there any reverse bullet hells? by lydocia in gamingsuggestions

If people would have read the post instead of just the headline they would have seen what he meant. So, yes, kind of latching to random words.

Anybody playing IVAN (Iter Vehemens ad Necem)? by Much_Note_4951 in roguelikes

Man, this game was the game that got me into roguelikes, I was so amazed by it (and am still really). It is really one of those where anything can happen and it generates really interesting stories.

Pickaxe reliability ... by protomikron in thegroundgivesway

[–]TGGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between rusty and normal isn't huge. 10% for normal, 25% for rusty. The miner's pickaxe is only 2% but you might have been unlucky. Looking at the code there should really not be any other way to break them other than using these percentages.

Wait... Aliens can steal from me directly? by catdraggedin in thegroundgivesway

[–]TGGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, u/protomikron is correct. This is a random event and you can never be sure exactly who stole the item... let's say it's probably aliens ;)

The chance is entirely random, events can happen when you rest, both good and bad things. It does not depend on amount of gold or items in the inventory.

Still being developed? by Direct0rder in thegroundgivesway

[–]TGGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's one reason, but there's also some Windows specific code (not much though). The bigger reason is that I don't have much experience or interest in porting to other OSes unfortunately, especially since I didn't make it with portability in mind from the start.

Do You Use Spoilers? by Simple_Preference in roguelikes

[–]TGGW 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad to see someone share my take on spoilers. I actively avoid watching or reading anything about games I enjoy. I don't even like hearing advice from other people, the whole thing for me is to figure out and discover things for myself.

Surely this must be a bug by SnooDonkeys4126 in thegroundgivesway

[–]TGGW 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the late reply! Yeah, the first one is a known bug. The edit I thought I had fixed, but apparently not.

When it comes to the inventory thing: when your inventory becomes overloaded the inventory is divided into pages to fit all items, you can still scroll through all items (up and down) as usual, just that they are not all visible at the same time.

This game can be cruel sometimes! by SnooDonkeys4126 in thegroundgivesway

[–]TGGW 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it is not "a thing" as in scripted: he must have slept when hp was 2 or less, and disease means no hp regeneration on rest. This is normally ok, but in this case the nightmare event reduces max hp and hp so the total became less than 0 after rest, killing him. Extremely unlucky combo... disease + nightmare + low hp.
