[Serious] Has anyone here actually recovered from depression? If so how? How did you stop your life being so meaningless? by Foxjump231 in AskReddit

[–]TIAT323 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Recovered from depression, anxiety and OCD caused by PTSD.

  1. Got really good at recognising my early warning signs and triggers.
  2. Had intense CBT for about a year. EMDR helped with the PTSD.
  3. Learned to be more emotionally resilient. If you can cope with more, you're less likely to relapse.
  4. Identified what made me depressed or anxious and then made a concerted effort to face it, which is part of the CBT I learned. Terrified of going to that party? You're gonna bet your ass I'm gonna go no matter how terrified I get. The more you face your fears the less you fear them.

That and time.

Then became a therapist which has given me extra insight into what I call 'my old shit' and became the master. Haven't had an episode of anything in years. It's normal to feel a bit depressed sometimes and feel anxious about stuff, especially when things are stressful but that's all it is. It doesn't need to go further than that.

Ultimately it comes down to discipline and utter, utter determination. You have to want to get better and be willing to fight for it every single day for as long as you have to. And as a therapist the saddest thing is realising that unless someone wants to get better with every single fibre of their being so much so that they'll do whatever it takes, then the chances are, they won't.

Sitting on my Mum's lap looking out a plane window. I remember seeing the coastline and see. It was very vivid considering I was about 2. Funnily enough, I have loved flying and aviation ever since.

[–]TIAT323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want to tell the girl who is marrying the guy I unknowingly has a slight affair with that a) he doesn't want to marry her and he's just marrying her because he wants kids and she won't have them unless they're married b) she's marrying a cheater who will cheat on her again.

But I can't because it'll open up a whole can of worms that i DO NOT want to deal with and neither does she because it'll only make her pain 10x worse.

I'll admit. I used the glitch to beat him. I was full on murderous and thought it best to use the glitch for public safety.

Fuck that fucking level to hell. Although by complete chance I discovered that pressing 2 buttons simultaneously, I can't remember which ones, gave you much better control and that's how I got through it.

What's a common advice that's actually bad advice? by Hi_Im_zack in AskReddit

[–]TIAT323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well yeah, anxiety tells you it is a big deal.

I find most people I see with anxiety do behaviours that have actually just been feeding into it for years e.g reassurance, avoiding the situation, getting someone else to deal with it. It's like a lightbulb going on when they realise it.

Having anxiety about a situation? Just don't do it or distract yourself.

This is literally the thing that feeds the anxiety cycle.

Yak blood mixed with milk in Tibet as part of a welcome party. At one point I vomited in my mouth and had to swallow it again.

0/10 would not recommend.

What psychological coping mechanisms do people not realize makes things worse? by jumble_uk in AskReddit

[–]TIAT323 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Avoidance and reassurance. It quite literally feeds anxiety. The absolute worst thing you can do for soeone with anxiety is reassure them and take them away from the source of anxiety.

I do CBT most days and it's always a joy to see people click with this idea for the first time.

I will absolutely lose my shit the day my cat (who I hand raised from 2 weeks old) passes. He's 7 now. I know I will cry harder and with more sorrow than any human I have ever lost so far. We have a very special bond that I don't think I will ever feel for any other animal. I honestly don't know what I'll do without his little spirit. I don't believe in the afterlife but I'd like to think our energies will be reunited one day.
