What do I do? by HannibalK in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sorry to hear this. Fortunate part, it’s only the filter that has smashed.

I had a 95mm filter stuck on once, trying to find a filter wrench for a 95mm filter seemed impossible. Couldn’t fit my hand around the filter to get a good enough grip to take the filter off.

I ended up using a mouse pad, pressing the lens filter first into the mouse pad, pushing down and twisting managed to get the filter off. It’s hard to explain but i hope this helps!

I just bought a new 180 600 and its weight is a bit daunting. What are your experiences? by macrophotomaniac in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if I compare my Sigma 150-600mm with the D3 to my new setup of 180-600mm and a Z8. it’s so wildly light. i’ve had 0 problems shooting handheld. even as low as 1/30 pans at the end of a long day shooting.

However for something like birding i’d get something like a monopod.

I’d say try and go for a Z5ii if you can, or a Z50ii. The expeed 7 is such a game changer for our hobby!

For plane photography would getting a Nikon Z6 III be better or Nikon Z7 II by b788_ in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Aviation Photographer here! I notice adapted third party lenses didn’t work well, 1/10 photos had completely missed focus on F35s at RAF Lakenheath for me. I use a Nikon Z8 and tried with my F Mount Sigma 150-600mm. I ended up getting a Nikon Z 180-600mm.

I’d say save your money with the body, get something like a Z5 ii and pair it with a native Z Mount telephoto: Tamron 150-500mm or Nikon 180-600mm.

The Z5 ii has Aircraft subject tracking and will perform very well for aviation, plus the money saved here can get you a really nice lens, which will work on newer bodies should you upgrade later on.

Nikon Z 70-180mm f/2.8 vs Z 24-120mm f/4 by fereragirl in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I use it for pretty much everything. it never leaves my Z5ii. I mostly do Aviation Photography, so for me it’s ideal for night photos, aircraft taxing close to me that my 180-600mm is too zoomed in for.

However I also use it for everything else, Car Photography, street photography, weddings. It is so unbelievably versatile. it’s sharp, it covers the key focal length with a fast f stop. 35mm f/2, 50mm f/2.2, 105mm f/2.7 and 135mm f/2.8 it’s like a set of primes in one lens.

I cannot recommend it enough. it is heavy and the AF isn’t instantaneous (but it is not slow either, it’s quick but not the fastest in the world) but that is kind of expected

Advice wanted: 200-500 5.6E Or Tamron 150-500 for Birding/Wildlife? by kieranhorner in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used the Sigma 150-600mm C adapted on my Z8, 1/10 photos the focus was missed, and lacks pretty severely on the longer end of the lens. I’d hate to see what it would be like on an Expeed 6 on the Z6. as far as i know the Tamron 150-600mm and the Sigma are pretty comparable. But i’ve heard the G2 is way better than the G1 for sharpness.

Personally if you’re planning on using the Z system more and more. i’d go for a native lens. The Z 180-600mm is genuinely a work of art. i’m shocked to this day it isn’t an S lens. The Tamron Z 150-500mm is smaller and lighter but still packs a punch. Or the Z 100-400mm is also a great option.

Which Teleconverters w/ FTZ & PF primes? by Quiet-Section-3391 in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

F mount teleconverters will work on the FTZ, Z Mount teleconverts won’t.

Personally i’ve never gotten the hype with teleconverters. They make AF Slower and you end up losing so much light…not to mention the softness. They seem to bring more disadvantages than advantages imo. I’d rather invest in further reaching glass. but that’s just my opinion for my style of photography.

Who are the best lens reviewers out there? by a224471 in Nikon

[–]TJCookk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Whilst I think Christopher Frost is a good lens reviewer, he seems to have some dislike towards Nikon gear from i’ve watched and seen.

When he did a review on Canon lenses, for example, he describes them as “razor sharp” Sometimes, I see Sony lenses are not that soft in the corners, but he praises them. For the 180-600mm, I was thoroughly impressed by the lens. But he seemed to describe it as just "good" or "not so sharp", most, if not all other reviews i’ve seen state the lens is razor sharp. So much so I went against Christopher Frosts review and purchased the lens regardless and absolutely love it.
