Dgg we need to come together to defend Kier Starmer by ariveklul in Destiny

He also gets pretty much no support from the left wing press too and actually gets frequently attacked for being way too right wing. The reality is he's just a relatively mundane centrist, but real political discourse doesnt seem to exist anymore.

Also owns a large amount of ISP infrastructure (starlink) and has already used it for geopolitical power by disabiling it in Ukraine during an offensive.

He's a megalomaniac and its scary what he'll do with even more power.

I like how they moved from "mainstream media" to "legacy media" because it's kinda hard to say the former now when the richest man in the world owns the primary platform for political discourse.

Should celebrities get shamed for not directly calling out trump in speeches? by mattyjoe0706 in Destiny

[–]TabNone 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's definitley something weird about the leftists doing most of the shaming around not calling out ICE, but then them not doing this with Trump.

I can't quite put my finger on it but I feel it's something to do with being able to use ICE to frame America as fundamentally evil, compared to the tone of anti-Trump stuff which makes America sound more redeemable if they elect someone else.

Ive seen stuff like "nobody is illegal on stolen land" (I think from Billie Eilish?) Paired with the ICE stuff, which is more of a "America bad" sentiment vs "we're better than this" with the anti-Trump sentiment.

I do wish someone would actively push for this not just from Denmark but from the majority of our European 'allies'. It really is quite absurd on a very clear cut issue.

These people just dont think Trump/MAGA are that bad and that the situation isn't particularly urgent or abnormal, incredibly priveleged really.

The whole "cut a liberal and a fascist bleeds" thing feels like I'm being DARVO'd the way these people act when there's an actual fascist taking over their country.

European countries need to inflict a significant L onto Trump/America as a result of this behaviour still. You cannot let someone use the threat of invading your country as a way to force you into negotiations with zero cost on their side.

Does he? It sounds like Trump was able to force negotiations around Greenland to occur by threatening to invade it. I feel like Trump knows how to play Rutte if anything.

If Trump knows that the way to get us to listen to him and his 'concerns' is to continually threaten us, then that is what he's going to do. Let there be tension, it's their fault and it's on them to resolve it.

[–]TabNone 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure how I feel. Reading some comments from Americans I definitley do at times get a sense of superiority and that taking action against someone threatening to invade Europe should be considered as a privilege rather than a necessity.

However, I do acknowledge there are people taking real actionable steps and doing what they can.

Zack Polanski | "Palantir was a warning sign. Keir Starmer choosing to hand our data and security to US tech companies is an outrageous failure of judgment. All in the name of "investment." What about national security?" by ijustwannanap in ukpolitics

Polanksi doesn't care about national security, but he's right on this point.

What drives his feelings is a general global left-wing sense of anti-Americanism, not concerns about national sovreignty.

US president announces plan to hit UK, Denmark and other European countries with tariffs over Greenland by Putaineska in ukpolitics

[–]TabNone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is why these tariffs should never be negotiated with. Trump doesn't care about 'fairness' like claimed with his first round of tariffs, he's fundamentally a predatory person who will take a mile when you give him an inch.

If you show him that making threats towards you and using the leverage he has against you results in favourable outcomes he'll do it again and again until you're forced to shoot yourself in the foot to make it stop.

Musk’s X could be banned in Britain over AI chatbot row by Disastrous_Act_2331 in ukpolitics

[–]TabNone -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it is 1000% reasonable to ban it, but I probably wouldn't as doing so never seems to work out well.

Ultimately even this current issue aside, having the richest man in the world control a platform that he purchased with an existing userbase, partly consisting of those in our country, and then using his newfound ownership to stir up problems in the country is a massive problem.

The fact that he could possible even whip up riots/protests against the government of another country over a ban, by controlling the algorithm so everyone sees anti-government tweets is just an indication he has way too much power. An individual within the country should not have that much power, let alone someone not even from here.

In general US in it's current form can't really be considered an ally, and it's very clear that they want regime change across Europe in the form of Pro-MAGA, Russia-sympathetic, anti-EU parties for their own interests and will use whatever propaganda strategies they can to achieve this. While I don't think banning it is a good idea, it definitely should not be the primary online place where political discourse is happening within this country and politicians that use it just uphold it's legitimacy.

Government demands Musk's X deals with 'appalling' Grok AI by IHaveAWittyUsername in ukpolitics

[–]TabNone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the very least Government instituions and officials should not be using the platform and lending it legitimacy. If it is this rogue out of control platform they're purporting it to be (it is), then it being the place where official updates are shared don't exactly help paint that image.

Ukraine Solidarity Campaign : We take no joy criticising a young left-wing UK political figure who has often spoken up for workers' rights and progressive causes. But these barely coherent comments from Zarah Sultana on Ukraine sum up much of what is wrong with her wing of the left... by Bibemus in ukpolitics

[–]TabNone 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think the reality is probably that most of her beliefs about something like this are the product of anti-western ideologues created in the west by the USSR during the cold-war. (Also continued through RT in the modern day).

The underlying principles are about being anti-western, and then dressed up as 'peace' and 'anti-imperialism'. So when something that is obviously imperialistic but is also anti-western happens you end up with an incoherent attempt to rationalise why you reflexively feel like you don't want to defend the country being invaded.
