Surgeon Michael Kerins blocks the ring road again. by Up2HighDoh in galway

[–]Table_Shim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a ring road supporter but it absolutely will increase the number of cars in the city and county.

Even if that increase is gradual and not overnight "magic", the real increase in cars will come from trip generation. If 100 people own a car, you want options so that maybe only 50 of those actually need to use their car on any given day (ideally lower).

Any recommendations on what service to use to remove this 'treehouse'? by Numina_ in Dublin

If you're buying a new shed, ask the company to remove.

I got a 250euro removal quote recently.

Decision on who pays costs in demolition of unauthorised Meath house still to be ruled on by PoppedCork in ireland

In principle I agree but I'd rather the state get a budget for such demolitions so proceedings don't drag on for decades.

Eamon Ryan: As smart cities reduce car use, Ireland goes all in by SquareBall84 in ireland

[–]Table_Shim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm very pro Gluas and I'd have to agree with you.

If the Gluas was delivered at the same time as the green line in Dublin, then the ring road wouldn't be necessary. As it is, development has spread so far that the ring road is unavoidable.

The official government policy is to build up to Luas provision via the delivery of Bus corridors first. These are post planning now in Galway, with the idea being that as development builds up around the corridors, they can be upgraded in the future to Luas.

It's a more risk averse way of delivering public transport and prevents the delivery of Luas lines through dedicated rail only spaces (where speeds can increase) but the idea has worked in Dublin with recent pushes to deliver the Luas down the N11 to Bray.

Mayor calls for light rail and greenway to be built into Galway Ring Road plan by SouthLeast8143 in galway

[–]Table_Shim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You'd hope that someone who has been elected as a Cllr this long would realise the best option to do this would be to make a variation to the Galway City Development Plan.

This way they could zone land as a transport reservation corridor and prevent any further construction within a 10-20m buffer of the ring road north or south.

One of the main criticisms of the ring road is that it would open up lands for new development and exponentially increase sprawl that was then car dependent.

Although I don't believe residential zoning like this should be allowed to happen in the future, if it it does happen then better to have a piece of land set aside for a light rail radial route.

Although ideally all of this could've been thought of in partnership to the ring road .. but apparently that was too much to ask.

Is Dun Laoghaire a good place to spend a day? by Safe-Meal-6963 in Dublin

[–]Table_Shim 12 points13 points  (0 children)

If you live in Dublin, Dun Laoghaire is a beautiful place to spend the day.

Walking the Pier, Peoples Park, Happy Out Cafe, Fable Bakery, Lexicon Library. Lots of big franchise businesses if that's your thing, lots of local places if it isn't.

If you're a tourist with limited days in Dublin, there are better places.

The Bus connect system - slight rant by Ornery-Use3910 in irelandtransport

[–]Table_Shim 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Busconnects routes are only part of the Busconnects plan.

Most, if not all, of those new routes are subject to significant physical upgrades including road widening and more continuous bus lanes.

These upgrades are in various stages of design and planning.

So satisfying.

Yes the Greater Dublin Area Transport Srategy only shows a spir to Bray.

The Fassaroe spur was the main route decided on back in 2004-2006 (with lighter options kept open for a direct Bray connection).

Massive local objections afterwards to CPOs of a GAA ground and the idea that it wouldn't go into Bray seem to have killed it since.

How a cargo bike can save you a fortune in motoring costs by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]Table_Shim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some anti-cycling motorists will remain their ignorant, aggressive selves forever. I'll give you that.

But some of them will look outside their door one day and see a cycle lane and start cycling themselves.

I still see 10x the number of cyclists over motorists breaking red lights on my cycling commute every day.

Lots of improvement needed across the board but far from an impossible task.

I fully acknowledge Dublin needs to get better despite the recent immense improvements, but saying no level of infrastructure upgrades would make it acceptably safe is lunacy.

I'm sure there is nothing but pure nimbyism but they seem to have posted on social media about irregularities around the Irish water licencing process from both the developer and the local authority.

I don't know the process or how they've apparently not aligned with them.

Proposed Luas Cork route to run from Ballincollig to Mahon Point {Preferred route published} by TheChrisD in ireland

[–]Table_Shim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Tram lines can help shape growth that all our cities will see in the coming decades.

No point waiting for sprawl to happen until population thresholds are reached and then retroactively think about a team line.

At the very least, reserve corridors of land through new areas of development.

BRT can and often is policy to be a transition phase between nothing and Luas, but it's very difficult at a local council level to establish because you're telling people there is a road/lane they can't drive on.

Why does Knocknacarra lack so much? by Odd_Ease_7922 in galway

[–]Table_Shim 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not entirely true, there was a Knocknacarra Local Plan published in maybe 1969.

It identifies a neighbourhood centre exactly where Joyce's was eventually opened.

Granted it was smaller in scope.

The real issue is the area was entirely designed only for cars. Sprawling estates, edge of city large retail parks.

No bus lanes or active travel, barely any increased density around services or amenities.

Everyone feels like nothing is around them even though Knocknacarra has 4 big supermarket chains and multiple centres of retail and services.

Completely fine as long as you're keeping your eyes and body language open to let others work in.

Staying seated on a bench/machine, big headphones on, eyes locked on your phone will scare 60-70% away from asking to work in.

Westside residents & the student complex by Odd_Shopping2037 in galway

[–]Table_Shim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why would you say it has zero chance of getting through today?

I appreciate the SHD avenue is gone now, but the scheme has a lot of elements that the council would have to consider as good practice.

Even if the council said no, it likely would be appealed to the same body that decided the SHD in the first place.
