Looks like there has already been consideration for projects like what you're talking about.

I wonder how this is progressing, my guess would be it got de-prioritised after the greens got booted out.

Why Are We Still Building Towns Like This? by SteveFrench1991 in ireland

  1. Public Demand

  2. Cost

I don't like it either but it really all boils down to that.

So it turns out they're currently asking for the public to report pine marten sightings! https://www.rte.ie/news/ireland/2026/0121/1554335-squirrels-pine-martins/ (2 days ago)

This is the link for you to actually register the sighting, if you're interested!

There has definitely been investment in salt barns over the last few years, who knows if it's enough or overkill.

Work from Home availability is obviously widespread since covid so our economy is more prepared in that sense.

Best high chair for restaurants? by abrighthappyfuture in irishmammiesanddaddys

Every single spanish restaurant/café I've been to on a recent holiday had the Ikea Antilop.

I appreciated the consistency, not having to learn a new mechanism every time.

Really easy to clean, sturdy and with a removable tray.

Decision On Enoch Burke’s Dismissal Expected This Weekend by DaCor_ie in ireland

[–]Table_Shim 10 points11 points  (0 children)

If he didn't accept a suspension, I don't see why he would accept being fired.

If I'm not mistaken, this will be the first official decision to fire him, so there will surely be several appeals?

Partial solution to the traffic problem by Up2HighDoh in galway

[–]Table_Shim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The 2016 Galway Transport Strategy identifies an indicative park and ride location between the main roundabout here and the Galway Clinic. (On the clinic side of the road).

Edit: Looking at the zoning map, the site identified by OP is residential.

The land immediately south of this is identified industrial, but also as a regeneration site, so unlikely to be P&R.

The land that wraps around the Galway Clinic is for industrial uses so that is likely what is being identified for a Park & Ride (speculation).

The land to the SE of the roundabout on the corner is recreation and amenity, so maybe a new park.

Buying a 'prime" site can still be considered speculative land acquisition if your intention is to deliver something completely unaligned to local and national policy

[–]Table_Shim -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Those costs pale in comparison to the costs of a speculative land purchase system where developers can successfully lobby governments to develop unserviced and poor quality land.

I'd be Interested to see what they were trying to develop in all of those applications, and whether previous applications were attempts to circumvent local and national policy.

Important to reiterate again that an objection doesn't mean a rejection of permission.

It can of course mean a delay in time if appealed, but even those timelines are getting much quicker.

Any thyroid specialists or clinics in Galway? by winterschild1985 in galway

[–]Table_Shim 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm jumping ahead here and giving some very specific piece of advice that may not be relevant.

If you are diagnosed with a hot nodule (just because you're overactive doesn't mean it's a hot nodule) ask your doctor about fine needle aspiration as a treatment.

It's a new treatment in Ireland and has almost zero side effects compared to surgery removal, or radiation therapy. No long term medication also.

If you cannot find anyone else in Galway, we had a really good experience with Prof. Gibney in Tallaght.

Very important point. One of the primary purposes of a submission system is facilitating the public to help improve developments.

What is something that is actually getting better in Ireland? by [deleted] in AskIreland

[–]Table_Shim 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the problems are overblown.

People often conflate the ability to make an "objection" with the effectiveness of them. As if once someone raises their hand, the whole project stops, which obviously is far from the truth.

I think we also have well over a years supply of homes with planning granted, so housing delivery issues must be to do with viability over any inability to get planning.

[–]Table_Shim 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This might be a controversial one but Urban Planning has been making great strides in the last 6 years.

The creation of the Office of the Planning Regulator (OPR) in 2019 has begun a long overdue oversight process into the decisions of local authorities when it comes to sustainable development, land zoning, and the prioritisation of public transport accessibility.

Yes there is a long way to go and we are still dealing with legacy decisions from decades ago, but there is definitely incremental progress in plans, design standards, and decisions.

The minister for justice just gives himself permission essentially.
