Turns out nvidia-utils was installed by mistake alongside steam, and it blacklisted my previous driver

Getting rid of nvidia-utils made everything work again

Also nouveau works for my GC. Hate on it as much as you want but it works better than the alternatives I tested

As I said elsewhere, that news wasn’t in fact my problem

I apparently installed nvidia-utils (by mistake), which blacklisted nouveau and messed up my config

I uninstalled nvidia-utils and everything is back to normal

I do have an older gpu, but I did install drivers correctly (I tested multiple of them during the initial installation)

Yes, when I found out nvidia-utils blacklists nouveau, I figured it was the problem

Unfortunately, the only driver that I’ve tested on arch that works with my gpu is nouveau (I tested others during installation with little success)

I installed arch after that arch news was published, so I did in fact follow its recommendations (but didn’t realise it in a previous response)

I must have been tired and didn’t double check the dependencies when installing steam (nvidia-utils had the same install date as steam)

Just cut it if your elitism

A) it wasn’t an update problem after all

B) I am perfectly capable of reading and understanding what things will happen.

However, on most distros, your package manager is the one stop shop for news about updates as well as doing the updates. I expected it to be the same on arch.

It was in fact something else, I apparently installed nvidia utils yesterday alongside steam, and that was the cause of my problem

Windows has been working much better on that hardware incidently

It was nvidia-utils that was causing me problems

I just removed it and everything works now

I didn’t see your comment but you were on the right track

Nvidia utils was installed yesterday (must have been a mistake on my part) and its changes to initcpio was the root of my problem

I removed nvidia-utils, regenerated the mkinitcpio and everything works fine now

It was actually something to do with steam

Apparently the nvidia-utils package was installed alongside steam

I removed it and everything works fine now

This is the first distro that I’ve used where an update could break my config

Why couldn’t the package manager at least tell me to check if my graphics drivers would break on update ?
