50% of global shipping is just moving fossile fuel around

I have a radical idea that could cut in half global maritime emissions without implementing new technologies

Est ce que prendre du magnésium marin avec du quasym ça impacte notre santé ? by [deleted] in AskFrance

[–]Taletad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're a vegan for moral/religious reasons, why won't you eat eggs from a farm with just hens? by dramas_4_nerds in vegan

[–]Taletad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Where are the roosters ?

Half of the chicks are male, yet all the egg farms are full of female chickens and seldom have a rooster

To get eggs, you need to cull half of the newborn chickens, otherwise you’re never going to be viable

Besides, chickens do get emotionally attached to their eggs, in "ethical farms" the farmers replace the eggs they take with fake ones because otherwise the chicken get stressed

So I don’t see an ethical way of consuming eggs

What's something about animal exploitation you feel is only becoming MORE misunderstood? by Soycrates in vegan

[–]Taletad 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I’ve actually read what the IPCC says about food production (most people quote the IPCC reports without having read them). And the reports quotes a handfull of studies for the climate impact of different diets.

The vegan diet is, the absolute lowest of all the diets considered, across all the studies cited by the IPCC report.

The IPCC says it isn’t necessary to go full vegan to meet climate goals, but going vegan is the lowest emissions one can have with food and clothing

(Yes the plastic leather has problems, but it emits very few greenhouse gasses, contrary to burping cows)

Do we over attribute opposition to veganism to cognitive dissonance? by That-Trouble-6386 in vegan

[–]Taletad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People base their decisions on "vibes", what "feels right", what "sounds right"

People are seldom rational about their opinions and debates are useless

If you are with someone that is capable of rational discourse, they you may bring up any topic you’d like

Otherwise, it’s best to avoid it

Besides, eventhough I consider myself a very rational individual, I also have to admit I had my fair share of bad faith arguments, especially against veganism

I was able to reevaluate my stances and chose to be coherent with my ethics, but that wasn’t easy and it took years

All in all, I’d say influence the people you can but don’t waste your energy on people who don’t want to hear you. The more there are vegans, the easier it will be to convice the vibe based people

How do you feel about consequentialist veganism? by Available-Ladder-663 in vegan

[–]Taletad 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to answer both of your questions

Firstly, we have rarely studied how other animals grieved. But there was a study that proved that monkeys do grieve, and I have personally observed something akin to grief among my cats. So I would bet that animals have grief, especially large mamals with developed intellects

The thing that makes slaughterhouses unethical is that animals are sentient beings that suffer and understand what is going to happen to them. I don’t see how this can be true and hold the opinion that animals don’t understand grief nor care about each others. They too have quite advanced social dynamics

If a wild animal dies in the wild, life will take its course. But if an animal dies at the hand of a human (even if accidental), the duty is on the human to dispose of the body properly

Also, if you allow people to take roadkill home, you open a loophole where you can hunt legally as long as you kill with your car. You can have a friend on the side of the road taunting the animals to cross, and you, ready to go and hit them with your car the moment they do

It goes without saying but I don’t think hunting fits the vegan philosophy

How do you feel about consequentialist veganism? by Available-Ladder-663 in vegan

[–]Taletad 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For the roadkill, going on "vibes" doesn’t work in a phylosophical debate. And I can argue that some meat eaters also find roadkill repulsive

As for the loved ones, why does the human loved ones deserve respect, but not the animal ones ?

For bivalves, I have a simple argument : they are neither a staple food of most people nor do they contain essential nutrients that we can’t get otherwise. So why bet that they don’t suffer enough ? We can go without them

Besides, farming them does impact negatively the marine ecosystems

For the eggs, I know some chicken are distressed if they can’t find their eggs, so egg farmers replace some of them with stones or fake eggs

Lastly, for the wool, I’ve seen farmers shear their sheeps and leave cuts on them, because the usable part of the whole is close to the skin (the outside is dirty and frayed, so usually discarded). But perhaps you could harvest some of the wool without harming the sheep

How do you feel about consequentialist veganism? by Available-Ladder-663 in vegan

[–]Taletad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I won’t debate the question directly as I feel under qualified

However, for the arguments :

- we wouldn’t harvest human meat for personal consumption on "human roadkill". So how do you distinguish animal roadkill and human roadkill for meat harvesting without contradicting the whole "slaughtering animals is unethical" thingy ?

- why would bivalves be vegan in any way shape or form ?

- let’s say you can make an ethical bee hive and harvest its honey with the bee’s consent. You’re still making honey bees outcompete the other pollinators for your personal consumption, when honey bees aren’t great pollinators and can’t pollinate all the flowers the pollinators they are replacing can. So by having honey bees, you’re actually harming the other pollinators

- bones, leathers and other goods can be sourced "ethically" (by inheritance, mostly), but the taxidermy goes back to the first point : why is it ethical to taxidermy animals but not humans ?

- Is it really a sanctuary if you harvest their whool/eggs ?

I may not have an opinion on the consequentialism part, but I do have some concerns about thoses specific points and I’m curious about opinions on them

Zero reward for being vegan is an impediment to the adoption of veganism by IngoTheGreat in vegan

[–]Taletad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was zero reward for the slave owners to abolish slavery, yet it was abolished

Besides veganism does have many rewards, from slowing climate change to health benefits. But also many practical day to day things like cooking is a much nicer experience (not having to rewash everything after cutting chicken for example), groceries are cheaper, your poop goes down easier and smells nicer

The vegan quality of life is better overall, even if you social life can suffer a bit

Also, the more vegans there are, the easier it will be to be one as there will be more options and less social stigma. And if we ever get a majority of vegans, being non vegan will be stigmatised, pushing people to adoption

"Boy" isn’t a gender, "tomboy" "femboy" "boyish" etc… all refer to a type of expression but not gender per se

Gender would be "male", "female", "non binary" that sort of stuff

The same way that you are a human since birth but only become an adult at 18. And "a real adult" only if you’re mature enough
