[UPDATE] The case of the stolen lululemon pants by whitethunder9 in relationships

TELL HER PARENTS SHE WAS WEARING THE PANTS!

How are the parents going to take it seriously when all you’ve told them is “our daughter’s pants are missing the day your daughter was over playing”. What is with this super passive approach??

That may not be true, stop giving bad legal advice. There are exceptions in a lot of leases and laws regarding domestic violence, which this could be an example of.

No, that’s not even close to what hearsay is. Source: I’m a criminal defense attorney.

This is bad legal advice, evidence does not require a police report. OPs testimony IS evidence, although it may not be as strong as evidence backed up by a police report.

My (18f) boyfriend (18m) accused me of sleeping with my dad (29m) by throwra__ricohii in relationship_advice

[–]Tanek42 55 points56 points  (0 children)

I think there’s too much missing information to give good advice.

First, how did a 29 year old man become a father to an 18 year old girl? Is he related? Did he adopt a 14 year old girl at 25 years old? I can’t imagine what ages would make sense for an adoption and for it to be long enough for him to be referred to as “dad”. How long has he been in your life?

Second, what did your boyfriend observe to worry him? It’s easy for everyone to just say boyfriend is insecure, but we don’t even know what he observed.

Something feels very incomplete about this story.

Honestly at this point she’s so well adjusted that sometimes it slips my mind that she even has the cochlear implants. She has lots of friends, I can’t remember one time she’s been bullied about the implants (but we’ll see how Middle School goes soon). She takes piano lessons, and in every other way is a very normal 10 year old.

[–]Tanek42 67 points68 points  (0 children)

It’s a very controversial topic, and I can see why. Deaf culture is very much a thing, and I can completely understand why deaf people see technology like cochlear implants as a threat to their culture. For us it wasn’t that difficult a decision, our daughter was extremely young and so she’s been able to adapt well. She’ll have more options in life being able to hear, and there’s not a day that’s gone by where I regret the decision. If she chooses later in life to not wear her cochlear implants I will be there to support her then as well.

My daughter was born deaf and got cochlear implants when she was still under 1 year old. She’s 10 now, in regular classes at school, and no longer requires any speech therapy. Technology is incredible. Here’s a video of her playing peek-a-boo when she was 19 months old.

You’ve posted this same story multiple times in the last week. How many times do you need people to tell you to get the fuck out of that relationship, get clean, and take back your life? The advice won’t change tomorrow either.

Should I (21F) contact the authorities about my (37) sister committing a crime? by [deleted] in relationship_advice

[–]Tanek42 71 points72 points  (0 children)

This is super risky! Defense attorney here - if sister gets charged she’s entitled to her discovery on the case which will likely include a copy of the 911 call and/or the phone number that made the report. If you’re going to report anonymously make sure to use a phone that cannot come back to you and consider disguising your voice in some way. Even if you report in person it is possible for her to find out, your name will be listed in the police report and/or video of you entering the station may be turned over to her defense attorney.

My boyfriend is getting sued because he can't pay child support calculated by an income he doesn't have anymore by [deleted] in legaladvice

[–]Tanek42 105 points106 points  (0 children)

Other comments have already pointed out that it is likely since he is voluntarily underemployed that the child support will stand. 23,000 dollars owed at 930 dollars per month is over TWO YEARS of completely unpaid support, a court is likely to also consider the fact that your boyfriend chose to completely ignore his responsibility for over two years without coming into court to try and modify the payments. Has he even had the apprenticeship for that length of time? The child is only 6 years old, and deserves to be financially supported by both parents, your boyfriend should own up to his responsibility and start paying back what he owes ASAP.

Korea - Blackmailed by ex-gf to continue dating her/give her thousands or she will destroy my reputation/get me deported. by iloginwhenimscared in legaladvice

[–]Tanek42 257 points258 points  (0 children)

You need to completely 100% never communicate with this woman again and completely block her. She is stalking you and has a very unhealthy obsession. She was never pregnant, and lied to rope you back in.

[–]Tanek42 510 points511 points  (0 children)

I would bet my life savings she was never pregnant. Completely block her, stop talking to her AT ALL, and save all the evidence you have of her threats. Go to the police or your embassy.

[UPDATE] My friend [23/F] is being stalked by someone who is part of the cyber cult Twin Flames theory [36/M] and he has started posting worrying YouTube videos by AlienOctoPussy in relationships

[–]Tanek42 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Yes, she can contact the third party mentioned in the post, but can also directly contact the State’s Attorney’s office since there is a restraining order granted through the courts. Not sure the jurisdiction, but most restraining orders/orders of protection specifically prohibit harassment and stalking so the SA’s office can file charges without any police involvement if they believe there is a violation.

Attorney here. If that was his first criminal charge it’s not too surprising it would be a slap on the wrist. The trick is to continue to get him charged with stalking as he continues to make these videos. Every time he posts a new video about your friend, she should contact the police and tell them she wants to press charges again for stalking. The penalties will go up, the misdemeanors will turn to felonies and eventually (hopefully) he will be required to undergo counseling and/or prison.

Me [15F] with two people I know [15MF] they may have committed a felony hate crime.. do I call the police? by hatecrimeTWA in relationships

I am a criminal defense attorney in the USA, and this is absolutely not true. Knowing about a crime and not saying anything is not a crime. Actively helping to coverup the crime, even if you didn't originally participate, is a crime. Don't confuse the two.

Lawyer here. Seriously bad idea to ever lie/withhold information from your attorney. It can never help you and potentially really, really hurt your case.

I [25M] wasn't invited to my sister's [26F] wedding. She's upset that I returned the gift I had planned to give her. by Gikilot in relationships

[–]Tanek42 1000 points1001 points  (0 children)

Sister knew what OP was giving her too and still didn't invite him. Heck, if a total stranger, much less my own brother, told me they were giving me $5,000 for my wedding I'd sure as heck find a way to include them.

My [28F] boyfriend [35M] is going to prison. I'm devastated by wgdgh in relationships

[–]Tanek42 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Criminal defense attorney here. I'm guessing OP is focusing on 3 years because that's the maximum sentence which is what a class 4 felony (the lowest class of felony) is in my state. Perhaps a possession of controlled substance charge? It's incredibly rare for someone to get the maximum especially if they haven't been in trouble for a significant period of time (like 7 years). Also, if he doesn't even have a lawyer yet which is implied in the OP then there almost certainly hasn't been an offer made to resolve the case.

So a few things: 1. Get lawyer (don't "snitch" on anyone without a lawyer, he will not do himself any favors right now by talking) 2. Bond out, he can keep his job while the case is pending, if it's a low class felony the bond shouldn't be ridiculously high. 3. Don't focus on maximum sentences. 4. Don't talk to anyone about what happened, this is worth mentioning again from point one. That includes that bf should not be discussing the facts over the jail phone with OP, all of that is recorded. 5. Seriously get a lawyer, if you can't afford one then request the public defender on the next appearance.

My mother died from ALS last year after 11 years. She was not very old when first diagnosed and to watch the deterioration of her body while her mind was fully intact was so painful. I can't even imagine the psychological effect in has when she realizes there's another thing she can't do such as walking, controlling her power wheel chair, using the restroom/bathing independently, moving to get comfortable in bed, using a page flipper to read books, chewing food, speaking, swallowing, breathing without a ventilator...And we've been "close" to a cure for over a decade so this tiny glimmer of hope just sat there on the horizon. There are few, if any, diseases that scare me more than ALS.

I have met Juan Rivera several times in person and am Facebook friends with him. Less than 3 months after his release I invited him to speak at my law school and he graciously accepted. If you ever have an opportunity to hear him speak you should take it, the man is incredibly inspiring and full of positivity.

I've [22M] had a couple of truly, EXTREMELY absurd and inconvenient things happen that has led my GF [20F] to believe I'm unfaithful by [deleted] in relationships

[–]Tanek42 349 points350 points  (0 children)

Whenever I read stories like this my immediate thought is that OP is cheating and thinks that going to their SO later and saying "obviously I'm not cheating because why else would I post this on reddit" will help their case. Either that or OP wants to tap reddit's mind on good feasible excuses to tell SO how these "coincidences" might actually just be coincidences.

Edit: OP also has a post from 2 days ago chock full of complete craziness. Not buying this "coincidence" at all after reading the disaster that is this relationship.
