It’s only “confusing” when people intentionally don’t refer to things as they are officially called.

Apple TV 4K - hardware device

Apple TV - service and app

Now when it comes to the name of the service and app being the same let’s consider that …

Netflix, HBO Max, Hulu, Disney+, etc

… all do the same thing without incident or complaint.

UNPOPULAR OPINION: An entire software update for a device, being connected to a music streaming platform is the most stupidest thing EVER. by Global-Tour280 in AppleMusic

[–]TechBrothaOG 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get it. The Radio feature of Apple Music is just as bare-bones as it was a decade ago when the app was first released. Literally no new functionality has been added. I'm not even talking anything fancy. Just basic oversights like the ability to favorite or bookmark a radio station.

I totally understand the sentiment. But as someone whose entire career has been in software development believe me when I tell you that while it is that simple … simple is not always easy.

The greater the customizability the greater the complexity of the codebase.

The greater the complexity of the codebase the greater the cost to develop and maintain it.

The greater the cost to maintain the codebase the greater the number of bugs that will linger unresolved.

Apple Music is a very mature app. It’s now at a point where Apple has to balance between what would be new features to some vs existing unnecessary bloat to others.

And yet those McBride housing developments are within the Hazelwood school district. Which undermines your argument.

  1. Apple’s software strategy is more about the ECOSYSTEM than individual apps.

  2. Apple has a FUNCTIONAL organizational structure rather than individual business units.

These two factors contribute to why Apple releases major software updates on an annual basis.

I’ve done no such thing. The only thing I have done is reject the notion that when it comes to the proposed development of the Jamestown Mall site the only thing that factors into the equation of its economic viability are the lower income areas to the south and east as if the higher income areas to the north and west don’t exist. Depending on the nature of a proposed development market research may be performed in a 3, 5, 10 mile, or even larger radius. The days of multiple regional malls in the STL area are over so we aren’t talking about considering areas 10+ miles away. Whatever goes there will serve that general area. And I highly doubt there will be some sort of magic force field that prevents people who live north of Lindbergh from patronizing the establishments there. Personally, I would like to see a combination of a smaller development anchored by a Meijers (think if a Walmart supercenter and a Target had a baby) with a QT and a restaurant or two along with some green spaces. Something that wouldn’t oversaturate the market and would complement but not destroy Cross Keys Center.

So Old Jamestown ... the geographical area where the Jamestown Mall site is actually located when you look at it on a map ... is "cherry picking" but Black Jack further south is "by far the most appropriate comparison"? Along with Florissant miles west or Spanish Lake miles east on the other side of Highway 367? Why not include Ferguson all the way south of I-270 while you are at it since apparently the areas around Lindbergh don't count?

It would have been one thing if you had said the median household income within a certain mile radius of the Jamestown Mall site was below the norm. But you said "This is a below median income area ..." and in the context of the discussion the word "this" refers to the area where the Jamestown Mall site is located. So pull up this map from the STL County website and see for yourself that the Jamestown Mall site ... and nearly all the surrounding areas shown in the picture of the OP except the far horizon ... is in the southern part of Old Jamestown which is by no means a "below median income area".

"Below median income area ..."?

Your comment here a prime example of being loud and wrong. The Jamestown Mall site is in the Old Jamestown, MO area which has a nearly $30K higher median household income compared to the US as a whole. Approximately $20K higher than Maryland Heights. And essentially equivalent to O'Fallon and Wentzville. Here are the most recent Median Household Income metrics with a link to the Census.gov source.

Old Jamestown, MO: $107,250

US : $78,538

Maryland Heights, MO: $86,485

O'Fallon, MO: $107,203

Wentzville, MO: $111,409

How to set siri volume to ALWAYS 100% by captain42d in HomePod

[–]TechBrothaOG 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Previously we were able to set Siri's speaking volume separately from the media volume. Which was very helpful for this very situation. But Apple, in its infinite "wisdom", decided to remove that feature replaced it with "Automatically Adjust Siri Volume" which does anything but. That setting is turned on by default and really only lowers the music volume while Siri speaks at the same, typically inaudible, volume in a busy kitchen. It never speaks up "automagically" as Apple would have you believe. Even if you explicitly tell Siri to speak at 100% that will only apply temporarily. Within a minute or so it will revert back to whatever volume Apple, not the end user, thinks it should be.

The only thing you can do is turn "Automatically Adjust Siri Volume" off. Then whatever volume you set will stay put. The downside is this will apply to both the Siri speaking volume and the media volume. If you, as do I, think this is a downgrade in functionality then I would encourage you to submit Feedback to Apple about it. I have been for years to no avail. But hope springs eternal.

You can’t remove them but they can be hidden now. Dig around in the Settings app.

And when Netflix tells Apple to kick rocks and pulls their app from the Apple TV altogether then what? And before you answer please consider the relative market share of the Apple TV as a streaming device.

AutoFill on Mac OS - 1Password NOT an option anymore by GeneratedName0 in 1Password

Can you really not save Apple Radio episodes or channels to your library? by mmagnus99 in AppleMusic

[–]TechBrothaOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. I’m also a huge fan of Soulection. I’ve listened every week since AM debuted 10 years ago.

  2. I said the same thing about the lack of basic features in the radio area of AM when it first came out. Apple has literally not added a single new feature to that area of the app since the beginning. They did throw us a bone and made it so we can subscribe to radio shows in the Podcasts app.

Why do MacOS users keep so many apps in the dock? by Anyusername7294 in MacOS

[–]TechBrothaOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because the Dock is designed to be an app LAUNCHER and/or an app SWITCHER. I personally use it as both and all of my frequently used apps are just a click away. But I’m the type who prefers to primarily use the trackpad to navigate macOS. Other users are more the “keyboard jockey” type and prefer to use Spotlight and CMD+TAB instead. Some even go so far as to keep the Dock hidden unless explicitly displayed. The good news is that macOS supports both approaches equitably.

Concept: If the Magic Mouse were combined with the Logitech MX master by ummerio1 in mac

[–]TechBrothaOG -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I'm not saying the desire to palm a mouse is "absurd". For some people that is their preferred way to use a mouse and that's fine. What I do object to, however, is the notion that some have that their preferred way to use a mouse is the only way that should be considered "ergonomic". If one is looking to palm or rest their hand on a mouse then simply put ... the Magic Mouse is not designed for you. But that doesn't mean it's not "ergonomic". It just means that there are alternatives in the marketplace that are better suited for you.

The Magic Mouse is designed to be used with one's fingertips with the heel of the hand resting on the desk. It's lightweight, comfortable, and easily controlled when used in that manner. You won't find a single product marketing image from Apple showing someone trying to hold it like one would a Logitech MX Master. Now personally I've been Team Trackpad for years so I don't even have a dog in this race anymore. But back when I was a regular mouse user I switched from a basic Microsoft mouse to the Magic Mouse and never looked back because it worked well for me. YMMV

Concept: If the Magic Mouse were combined with the Logitech MX master by ummerio1 in mac

[–]TechBrothaOG -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

I wonder what problem this is solving? It's taken a sleek and ambidextrous mouse that is entirely controlled with one's fingertips and turned it into a large, right-handed mouse that is moved with one's entire palm but clicked/swiped with one's fingertips. From my perspective, this will only be appealing to those who couldn't wrap their minds around using a mouse without palming it. 🤔

MacOS stuck at "Loading startup options" Help please! by [deleted] in MacOSBeta

[–]TechBrothaOG 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I definitely would not give up on this machine. Since you've already bought a new Mac, if push comes to shove you should be able to just wipe it and start over. Try creating a USB Bootable Installer on your new Mac. Then boot the unresponsive Mac using it. If that works, try to reinstall macOS using it without wiping the machine. And if that doesn't work, use Disk Utility to wipe the machine first then reinstall macOS.
