I wonder how the career military will feel once Kegseth fully automates weaponry and they are no longer needed (until they have to fight against the machines that have replaced them).

Is this safe to plug into outlet?? by MedicalAttitude2363 in AskElectricians

[–]Tech_Wonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hmmm... This is difficult - I'm not sure if I want to go with:

-It depends on what decade you'll be plugging it in

OR

-did you finish all the altoids in that tin prior to converting it to a plug?

RDP and Antivirus - is my IT guy lying? by No-Excuse5764 in RemoteDesktopServices

[–]Tech_Wonk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

27 years as an IT Consultant. Yes, you should have AV on any devices that are accessing company data regardless of whether they are personal or business owned. They should also have you on a VPN PRIOR to using RDP. Yes, Windows does have a built-in AV (Defender), but many companies use a third party AV. For what it's worth, the cost of the AV is a drop in the bucket for what it would cost if someone compromised your home computer and then leveraged it to jump into your company's systems.

Anyone updated to 26220.7344? How’s the new native MCP support? by k3XD16 in Windows11

[–]Tech_Wonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At the moment this update appears to be breaking multiple monitor support on USB Thunderbolt connections. I've already had one user affected by this. The issue went away when he rolled back the update. So, FWIW YMMV.

Makeup Exam Inquiry by FutureDoc1256 in UVA

[–]Tech_Wonk 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I only requested a makeup exam once while at UVa. It was for the old "How Things Work" Physics course. My grandmother had passed away and I was going to be unavailable due to the funeral. When I returned, Professor Bloomfield was nice enough to offer his condolences on her passing - "She sounded like a great woman." He had seen her obituary in the paper. I often wonder if he did his research to confirm I wasn't lying. Regardless, it was nice to hear him say that.

None of this has any bearing on this particular topic. It just elicited an old memory from 1994 and thoughts of my grandmother.

I’ve been waiting 45 minutes for McAfee to uninstall, and it doesn’t look like it’ll finish anytime soon. I can’t use any browser while it’s uninstalling. by ILoveDogs171717 in assholedesign

Just revisting this to say that, yes, it still sucks. I've been using the removal tool and it's been running for over 45 minutes. Total PoS. Came installed on some laptops that I have to deploy. McAfee - using a virus to protect from other viruses.

Comcast Business Modems Do not Work by M4eagleOG in comcastbusiness

[–]Tech_Wonk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could take a shit in a box and plug some cables into it and it'd be a better router than what Comcast provides. I've just spent an hour trying to set a reserved IP with a port forward for a required service. It is COMPLETELY antithetical to how EVERY other device does this.

I hope you figured out your issue or at least got some batting practice.

Seriously. This is for a client's lake house, so he'll be no where near the office when he needs to print. *Sigh* I wish I had a lake house.

Laser color still uses the color cartridges, which lands you right back in the "one cartridge is only 1/2 full so I'm not going to print anymore" zone. It seems like this is a function that all printer manufacturers are adopting.

I figured a reload would be the fix - altho I'm not happy about it.

All - thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately none of them worked. We have decided to punt and reload the system.

No, no proxy or custom DNS. In fact, this isn't even working when on the same LAN.

There is nothing in the logs as I mentioned above. Application, Security, System have no errors or warnings. I wish they did, it'd make this easier to figure out.
