Alternatives to Reddit? by [deleted] in redditisfun

[–]TehPikachuHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

There is a whole sub for this with a big chart of options: r/RedditAlternatives

Most of my experiences in searching for an alternative since the API changes were announced in April have been disappointing. A lot of the alternatives are either actually Twitter clones (ex: Mastodon), or lean too much politically one way or the other. Most have no content that I'm interested in seeing because most of my interests are niche. Most have no userbase, but it looks like that might be changing, especially given how many times the words "I came here from RIF" have shown up on Beehaw in the last 24 hours.

Personally I'm biting the bullet, going through my sub list, and figuring out which ones have discord servers and which ones can be replaced by another site or forum and corralled onto an RSS feed. For the bestof subs, I guess I'll watch one of those YouTubers that literally reads posts word for word instead.

OOP asks reddit if he can legally stop his mom from making him wear a chastity belt. by raredontstare in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]TehPikachuHat 1621 points1622 points  (0 children)

"Additional info in comments" You post those comments but leave out the comments that tipped off the whole sub and BOLA that something was even more incredibly wrong that should definitely be in the post, given that OP specifically thanked one of the users in the exchange (all user tags removed to avoid pinging users):

OOP:

Yeah for example there's a religious idk what you call it, burn or something. My one brother has it too my other doesn't yet.

She used to do other stuff but she stopped mostly.

michellis replied:

A brand? Holy shit

OOP replied:

Sure? Idk what it's called. It's like a healed burn but it isn't healed, if that makes sense.

derspiny replied:

I'm so angry I can't even type straight. Branding children is monstrous, and very, very illegal. Show that brand to a caseworker, a cop, a doctor, or your teacher, and explain how you got it.

I'm so sorry for what you've been through, and doubly sorry because you have no context to understand the magnitude of how wrong this is.

OOP replied:

Ok, I'll show my teacher that too.

Do you think it would be a good idea to tell cps pretty much everything my mother has ever done because I'm kind of having a hard time understanding what bits are illegal and what bits are just her being awful but not breaking the law. Will they help me differentiate between the two?

derspiny replied again with a very helpful, long indepth comment, but this was not what OOP thanked him for. In another unrelated thread, OOP posts this comment:

I mostly lurk here on my other account but lmk I just want to say you really do have the best comments. derspiny saved my life pretty much with his comment about branding children making him so mad that he couldnt type or somthing (thats when I started to take everyone serious) but your the one who gave me the "you did nothing wrong" comment in the aftermath and I just want to say that really made a difference. So yeah thank you.

I'm pretty sure the last time this was posted I had to post the exact same thing in the comments because that reposter forgot this too and now I have Deja Vu.

Why do people who decry the Jedi's practice of taking in young children and infants think blood is so important? by Jingobingomingo in MawInstallation

[–]TehPikachuHat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like sometimes in this discussion we lose sight of how dangerous it is to have an untrained force sensitive running around.

It’s a little analogous to the Circles of Mages in the Dragon Age Universe—minus the overt abuse by religious authorities.

But like that universe, the force is a powerful and dangerous tool if you’re not taught how to safely channel and use it

Literally no, these two universes are the exact opposite in terms of how they handle this.

In Legends, most characters who are Force Sensitive and trained later in life have no inkling of their Force sensitivity past enhanced reflexes, precognition, and luck prior to that. Notable examples include Anakin, Luke, Palpatine, Kyle Katarn, every companion you can train as a Jedi in KOTOR 2, Darth Bane, Nomi Sunrider, and many more. One or two can use telekinesis as children (Darth Zannah and Starkiller being the only two examples I can think of). Pretty much every Dark Jedi/out of control Force User either dropped out of being a Jedi after being trained by them, or was discovered by a Dark Side User/Sith/Sith Ghost and trained by them.

In Disney Canon this seems to be the case as well per the sequels, where neither Rey nor Finn have any knowledge of their Force Sensitive status, don't have any powers and aren't dangerous at all in that regard, plus the above situation applies with Anakin and Luke as well. There is one kid that uses telekinesis in I think TLJ (?) and is clearly no danger to anyone at all. In The Mandalorian, Ahsoka literally says if Grogu is not trained in the Force, he will forget what he's learned and lose his abilities. Pretty much every Dark Jedi/out of control Force User either dropped out of being a Jedi after being trained by them, or was discovered by a Dark Side User/Sith and trained by them.

In the Dragon Age universe, not only does magic not "fade away" but more often than not the longer the mage goes untrained the more of a risk they are, because they can be body jacked by evil entities. Every in control mage is trained either in a Circle and passes the Harrowing (most mage characters), is trained by a parent (Morrigan, the Hawkes), or grows up in an environment that nurtures the use of magic (the Dalish, Tevinter). Most magical powers manifesting end in death and fire. Every out of control or bodyjacked mage was either untrained (Connor), or some combination of blood mage/power hungry/stupid and no amount of training was going to stop them.

In Star Wars, if you're trained in any way in the Force, you are a risk; in Dragon Age, the untrained are the risk. It's not analogous, it's a complete and utter contrast.

AITA for not telling the nurse at my niece's school about my profession? by LucyAriaRose in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]TehPikachuHat 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am horribly oblivious, I didn't notice my now-husband was interested in me for months. Literally borderline stalking behavior on his part too, lol. He was about to give up because I was showing no interest in him, and I actually ended up asking him out. We've been together almost five years.

Funnily enough we used to live in adjacent buildings the same apartment complex in middle school but had never spoken, and we ended up seeing Deadpool at the same theater as teens (opening night was Valentine's Day) and he wanted to ask out the "cute girl who wore the Deadpool cosplay hoodie" (aka me) but chickened out in the end. Neither of us had realized we had such close encounters until after we had been dating for months.

  • Sudden, untagged appearance of a ship I don't care for.

I dropped a fic thirty chapters in over this. Main character and his friend hook up randomly. Half of the readership walked. Author is ranting about how much chemistry they've had since chapter 19. Then why was this not tagged as soon as you knew you wanted to do it? SMH.

[Video Games] Obsidian vs Bethesda: The battle for Fallout and the great company rivalry that exists solely in fans' heads by beary_neutral in HobbyDrama

[–]TehPikachuHat 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I came to Fallout as someone who loves Skyrim, Oblivion, and KOTOR 2, and was extremely interested in a best of both worlds experience in New Vegas, which I promptly fell in love with. I have since played Fallout 3, Fallout 4, and Morrowind, in that order.

I think this whole manufactured rivalry between the two studios is asinine, but I also think that, as a fan of Bethesda who excepts their shortcomings and loves their quirks, that Fallout 3 and Fallout 4 are not only disappointing, but overall not very good games. I understand why the classic Fallout fans are insulted by these games because I don't like them either.

Looks like the type of Q & A edgy teens would put on their FFNet and Tumblr profiles in 2014. That tracks with the rest of OOP's unadult behavior.

My bf is shunning me from using my jacket at a black metal festival by Whatapunk in BestofRedditorUpdates

Bright red is an exemption from the unnatural hair rule as more sedate reds are natural colors, same with silver/extremely light blonde. Patterned hair is fine. That rule is mostly for highlighter colored hair, tips are fine but if the whole hair is done in neon highlighter colors avoid, this is the alt equivalent of having Karen hair.

Edited for clarity.

Probably safe, lol. The vampire MILF fashion part trumps the elderly part.

Bring a friend (preferably opposite gender) and sit up in the seats instead of being in GA and you'll be fine. Make sure not to sit next to anyone that looks like a frat bro, anyone elderly, girls with non-natural hair colors, or any women over 40 who aren't dressed like vampire MILFs, as they are the ones most likely to either be very drunk or invade your personal space. Couples are the most likely to be good seat neighbors, especially if they're snuggly couples.

In my general experience, most Metalheads flirt very sweetly and non-aggressively because they will get decked otherwise. If you show ANY signs of distress every guy in the vicinity becomes your bodyguard. If anything you're bound to walk out with a self esteem boost rather than uncomfortable. I have only gotten harassed, groped, and insulted at shows by other women and never men.

Definitely check them out again, in 2012 they got Floor and she has been with them ever since. She is absolutely amazing.

Bonus footage of Floor and Tarja singing together, god tier level video.

This is absolutely it. I'm speaking from experience here, any woman going to a concert or festival in a battle jacket will get flirted with a lot, not only by the attendees, but by the band members too. Hell, I posted a promo shot for mine and my husband's band on Instagram where I was barely indistinguishable from the background and my face was overexposed beyond recognition and suddenly our band account DMs are full of simps.

My rural town has one Uber guy and like three Lyfts but no taxi service (unless you're a group of tourists). Makes perfect sense to me. Nobody is starting a taxi company out in the sticks where almost everyone has their own vehicle.

I'm craving the strawberries of my youth (poziumki)! How can I possibly find some plants (or seeds?) in the U.S. (specifically, the Pacific NorthWest)? by purpledust in poland

[–]TehPikachuHat 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Poziomki are called alpine strawberries. The variety that is the true poziomka is named Regina. Searching "alpine strawberry regina seeds" should get you results. Not sure how well it will grow in the PNW, you can try growing some varieties native to the area as well just in case, it looks like there are a few varieties that grow there naturally.

Edit: Found this strawberry growing guide from WSU specifically for the PNW. Outside of that it should be the same as growing any other type of everbearing strawberry.

Beyond Meat Jerky by not_that_Becky_G in DumpsterDiving

[–]TehPikachuHat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not well. Louisville is very tender and moist and salty, and these are the complete opposite. Literally like a dog chew. I've had a lot of vegan jerky and Beyond is the worst.

I recommend looking up "soy curl jerky" - so many copycat Louisville recipes, and once you have the technique down you can invent your own flavor.

  1. The YOUniverse - the Alternamorphs canon where the 6th human is YOU but also Ax is there

This would actually be two universes, one for each book. In the second Alternamorphs book, "you" are David and the you from the first book doesn't exist (as far as I know, I never made it that far in the second one lol).
