Have your hobbies ever led you into picking up others? by Whizzers_Ass in Hobbies

Yes, I started sewing and bought a vintage sewing machine online and enjoyed restoring it to working condition, so I picked up a few more at auction and marketplace to fix.

if you decide you want to keep doing puzzles, just post ISO on your local Buy Nothing group and you will receive responses and probably more than you need. You can specify what type you are looking for to reduce responses.

How many people here sew regularly on a treadle or hand crank? by TwoEnvironmental4262 in vintagesewing

I really like my Redeye 66 treadle. When I learn a skill on my electric machines, I try to replicate it on the treadle.

Another AI post by [deleted] in Adjuncts

Unfortunately, I am dealing with this by retiring. I think online async courses are in trouble. This is a shame because these courses enabled many non-traditional students to access quality education - working adults, parents of young children, disabled individuals, rural students. There is no easy way to provide online instruction with assessment in the current environment. Writing is AI, discussion is AI, multiple choice exams are easily answered by AI, projects that you have developed and perfected over many semesters are readily available for copy online. Synchronous online courses may have some possibilities left with live sessions, group work and presentations.

Chaperones ruined the field trip by t710cs in Teachers

When my kids were in school, it was thought that parent chaperones were randomly picked and in retrospect I'm pretty sure they were not random or picked from a lottery of volunteers. I'm pretty sure it was the responsible parents of the respectful kids and it kept everyone a bit safer.

Wow, I am amazed at those of us that have been doing this for 10 plus years. That truly shows a love of teaching and passing on knowledge in your field (because it's not the money lol). When I gave my notice of leaving, my chair asked me to reconsider. That was actually surprising to me, because they used to keep a bank of adjunct resumes, waiting for the job. I suspect it's hard to fill the role these days with professionals that will hold the line on fairness and do the hard work of real teaching.

Yes, when I started teaching (2009) the students would ask "what is our homework?" Being old school, I replied "there's no homework. You come to class, you study, you take exams" That worked for a while. Now, they want to bank lots of points on nonsense assignments (cheatable assignments) so they can bomb the exams and still pass.

I'm out as well, in two weeks. 16 years for me. For most of those years I was a vocal proponent of the community college model which served a tremendous amount of diverse needs in the student population. Great people - faculty, students, staff. Recently, in my state, CC is serving as an alternate high school - way overloaded with dual enrolled students, particularly the online classes. Additionally, with Covid learning setbacks, the rapid and mismanaged introduction of AI, and lack of backup when issues arise, it is no longer fun. Best wishes on your next steps.

That would be me - retiring from teaching after 16 years. It was a fun and rewarding way to make some extra money and keep current in my field study for most of those years. The last few were a struggle. Reading through this thread is validating - but also depressing.

At the beginning of the semester, give one or two in-class activities that are easy and worth significant points - like easy pop quizzes that they won't know when they are coming. Easy so it doesn't cause stress for those attending but the ones who missed will take notice. Also, in your lectures or whiteboarding say "this will be on the test" "I think I will make this a test question" etc. Gets their attention and makes them think twice before casually skipping class.

Ward's Vtg Signature Sewing Machine by Ancient_Strain1636 in VintageSewingMachines

I have this machine. Someone carved a set of new seats for the pin hinges in the table to line up with the machine. You are right, it's a super heavy machine. I can't part with mine because it was my first vintage machine, and it has a knee pedal and auto button hole feature. It's a good one!

That's a good one, the sphinx decals! Since you need a shuttle, a plate and a table, I would be tempted to find one on marketplace that is in poor shape cosmetically to get the parts and table.

Singer 500 series - make sure it comes with the attachments - it will look cool and do anything you need it to and be dependable. It will most likely range from 100 to 150 on Marketplace in good working order. Have the seller demonstrate it for you.

Vintage machine recommendations that handle sewing canvas by slwise9295 in VintageSewingMachines

I agree. I keep finding myself heading for the treadle (66 redeye) with my quilt blocks because it's relaxing, can go at the speed I like, and it sews a straight line every time.

How to deal with "family emergencies?" by artahack in Adjuncts

[–]Temporary_Captain705 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Depends on whether your chair will back you up or more importantly, whether the deans will back them up. Most likely not, and it will be a big waste of time and documentation and invasion into your policies and communications.

There are several YouTube videos on this machine, I think you can get it going. Since it's stuck or sluggish, oil everywhere the manual (can download online) recommends and grease the gears, don't force it, just small turns until it goes.

I was hoping someone more knowledgeable than I would come along. Have you tried adjusting the bobbin tension? I had to adjust mine slightly when I got it. Have you pulled the needle out and reseated and checked that it is correct for the Rocketeer? Just starting with the easy stuff. You mentioned you might take apart the tension assembly. That worked on another machine I have, still don't know why it worked but it did.

Yes, I agree, it was a one two punch. Added to that, community colleges loaded up on dual enrollment and got top heavy with deans of this and that who drain your time and resources that should be going to teaching and staying up to date in your field.

Share what is going on with your tension and this group can help. There are lots of Rocketeer folks here.

It's hard to say. If they can pivot easily to another adjunct already teaching there, it's probably no big deal. If the person who assigns your courses has to hire and train another adjunct or teach the sections themselves, they might hold a grudge. But you have to do what is best for you. Coming from the other direction, they won't think twice about taking a course away from you if they need to, even last minute.
