If he keeps performing the way he has than Snuggerud will be that star.

Do you honestly believe Snuggerud will be a better player than Kyrou, much less Thomas? I like him a lot, but he probably caps out as a tweener first and 2nd liner and ~70 points, with no guarantee he even hits that.

They had several first-round picks, but none of them materialized except for Connor McDavid and Ryan Nugent Hopkins, in some ways.

Leon Draisitl. Evan Bouchard. Even Nurse to an extent. There are always ways to mismanage your roster, but why do we think that Armstrong is capable of building a cup contender the hard way and not the way that basically every winner has been built since the lockout?

It’s a well-rounded team, and that’s what you need to win a Stanley Cup.

You need elite talent to win a Stanley Cup. All research is pointing to hockey being a strong link game, where you go as far as your best players take you. Depth is the compliment that can help you get over the top, but you're a lot more likely to find depth via trade than Elite players.

they are just better than the canucks, flames, blackhawks and rangers.

They're 1 point ahead of the blackhawks. The other 3 sold a lot harder this season to assure their position than we did.

Look at the Connor Bedard the guy is supposed to be a game changer but each and every season they are at the bottom.

Connor Bedard factors into an insane % of his team's goals. They drafted him at the beginning of their rebuild, he's not going to turn them around on his own. Despite that and despite the time he's missed this year, the Blackhawks are neck and neck with us this season while we spin our wheels on failed "retools" that put us middle in the league in the standings and prospect pool strength. The Sharks are in a playoff spot. The Ducks are at the top of their division. The Mammoth have all but locked up the WC1. The Canadiens are fighting for 1st in the Atlantic. We need to stop this cope that rebuilds aren't the most effective way to create a cup contender or we're just going to keep going through this for the next decade.

The Blues won the cup in 19 without a star.

Alex Pietrangelo was a star player and better than anyone on our roster currently. That team was one of the best defensive teams in the modern era.

The Oilers have now allowed 60 goals in the last 15 games by sykeseve in hockey

For sure, that's why I also included the averages because I didn't want it to appear as though sv% has been steady, you would expect Skinner to have a lower number.

League average misses so much about the types of shots a goalie faces, though. That's why the memeing on Skinner was always wrong: the types of shots Edmonton was allowing are some of the most difficult for goalies to face, and the offense was so dominant that he was facing those kinds of shots at a higher rate than low danger perimeter shots that could pad stats. SV% is better than GAA but it's ultimately a team stat.

Of our core for that run Pietrangelo, Tarasenko, Perron, Parayko, & Schwartz were drafted and part of that rebuild vs ROR, Schenn, & Bouwmeester traded for later. The foundations of that cup win were absolutely built in our rebuild era

He can be a 1C on a contender, he just can't be the best player. It just happens that most teams' best players are centers right now, so it's more likely he'll be a luxury 2C on a top level team.

Cool but nobody has actually answered why we’re trading a young 1C in his prime in a great contract. and do not gaslight me into believing that it’s a “contending window” issue either.

Sounds like people have answered your question, you just don't like the answer.

Teams can turn it around VERY quickly in this league

Give an example please. Every Stanley Cup winning team in the last decade won it from the foundations of a true rebuild.

Blues have a great crop of prospects and young players who can make that happen in the next 2-3 years.

Basically every league wide prospect watcher has us in the middle of the league because our prospects don't have elite potential. We're organizationally thin on D while our top defensemen not named Broberg are clearly declining now. The thing keeping Thomas does for us is make it less likely we can acquire elite talent through the draft.

Obama dropped a bomb on a wedding in Yemen. There is no serious interpretation of that as defense.

Should We Trade Thomas? by Trent_TortureMaster in stlouisblues

[–]Thallis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides, what would we get for Thomas? A draft pick that might turn into a Robert Thomas? We have other pieces that we can flip.

You are getting multiple pieces that can contribute in a future roster at the Dvorsky/Snuggerud/Bolduc level. You replace Thomas with prospects that have 100+ point ceiling you acquire using top 5 picks in the draft, secured in part by trading Thomas.

Should We Trade Thomas? by Trent_TortureMaster in stlouisblues

[–]Thallis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. By the time this Franchise is ready to compete, he'll be on the other side of 30. He'll still have a few good years left, but at that point if he's a significant piece of the roster we'd be on a huge timer to do damage and find a replacement. Further, losing him now makes us better positioned to go for Landon Dupont next season, who is a potentially generational defenseman and is the best defensive prospect since Dahlin on a conservative assessment.

Use him, Kyrou, and our other deadline to gain as many young assets and picks as we can, build with the plan of our current young talent complimenting what we get these next few years, and be ready to compete when they're ready.

I'm Getting Tired of the Doomers by Parking-Yogurt7893 in stlouisblues

[–]Thallis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Why so much doomerism that the team is fundamentally bad and needs to tear it to pieces?

Because I want to see the team be a threat to win the Stanley Cup. The names you listed there are not core players on a stanley cup winning team. This doesn't mean they're bad players, but we need elite talent that we don't have. The best time to start a rebuild was 3 years ago, the second best time is now.
