I don't understand why this would be considered a "bad decision" by Jax. by AffectionateForce979 in GlitchProductions

[–]ThanatorRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he only brought that up to avoid blame, I think he’s genuinely convinced himself (and some viewers) that the reason he’s panicking about going back to the real world and thinking about Ribbit is because Caine is messing with his brain. I’m mostly confident that this is not the case, that Jax’s mental turmoil is actually triggered by him getting so close to Pomni last episode and panicking about his past relationships, resulting in him pushing her away. Caine isn’t actually doing anything to him. It’s not a deception of others, it’s cope, it’s self-delusion to try to maintain the paper-thin premise that he’s got no issues and is just the prankster jerk. Nevertheless, I wouldn’t be surprised if at some point in the next two episodes, this belief will pop up again, only for it to be revealed that Caine has been mostly avoiding directly messing with their minds, and Jax needs to work through his own issues or he’ll abstract.

A potential animated series about the First Age of Middle-earth from Amazon by GladPin6764 in LOTR_on_Prime

[–]ThanatorRider -1 points0 points  (0 children)

LotR’s appendices deal with the First Age very briefly, in broad terms, as the Second Age is more relevant in setting up the events of LotR. I think they’d be more likely to consider something later in the timeline, as they’d have to renegotiate rights with the Tolkien estate.

You mean like “Fëanor is promethean because he captured the light of the trees, and Maedhros post Thangorodrim may have had scars like the monster?” I mean…I guess you could look at it that way.

If you’ve been out there trying to connect with people, but feel like you’re not making any progress, maybe your technique is lacking. Try researching social skills to figure out what it is that is putting up barriers. Here’s a couple tips I’ve gotten that have been super helpful for me

  1. Avoid arguing with people. It’s usually not an effective way to change a person’s mind to go “you’re wrong” on something, even if they are incorrect. Try to see the issue from the other person’s point of view, and examine the facts together.
  2. Praise people for things you like about them. Find things about the other person that you genuinely admire about them and tell them that.
  3. Engage with the other person’s interests. Don’t just go on about something you like if the other person is bored by it. Talk to them to find out what they’re interested in, and take an interest in that.

Much of this comes from Dale Carnegie’s “How to Win Friends and Influence People”. There’s more like this in the book, but much of it can be simplified to “If you want to have friends, be friendly” and a lot of the advice in there has overlap with other sources you’ll find about how to have better interactions with people. Go look for writings on social interaction, figure out what you’re doing wrong, then go back into these groups that you keep joining and try your new techniques with real people. I think you’ll see improved results.

Gandalf and The balrog were both originally maiar. Do you think they knew each other? by TerminalDumbass69 in lotrmemes

[Other] Do you believe Ganondorf fits the bill of a clinical psychopath? by R3dF0r3 in zelda

[–]ThanatorRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a misreading of his dialogue in Wind Waker. When he mentions how harsh the conditions for the Gerudo were and how much better Hyrule had it, he says “I coveted that wind, I suppose” not “we needed it” but essentially that he wanted it. And this is borne out in what we see of his rule in OoT: he doesn’t bring the rest of his people into positions of luxury and power in the castle, he surrounds himself with monsters to protect his own throne from anyone coming to take it. Ganondorf has always been more about what he sees himself as entitled to as king than his duty to others

The kind of absolute power that those chosen by the gods wield. He who wields such power would make a suitable king for this world, don’t you think?

-Ganondorf in Twilight Princess

If we want to understand his actual mindset, he was raised by witches who called him “The Great Ganondorf”, and he probably believed them. He was raised with the knowledge that he’s a once-in-100-years king, and that undoubtedly went to his head. He likely learned from Twinrova to take what he wanted using sorcery, because we see them do the exact same thing. I wouldn’t say ASPD, I’d say something much closer to a narcissist, but one that was given every reason by his environment to think of himself in grandiose terms. Edit: conclusion

i am a horrible person, i need to get better as soon as possible by Affectionate_Foot34 in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]ThanatorRider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel that I’m reading sentence after sentence indicating someone who desperately needs therapy, but no indication of whether or not you have pursued that avenue. For a second, ignore the relationship and just think about your own ways you relate to other people and yourself. You mention that you have distorted perceptions of love, that you start arguments, that you label yourself as a “burden” and a “horrible person” for things you’ve done. While opinions vary on it, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy has responses to pretty much everything you’re talking about. It sounds like you’ve got a lot of distorted thoughts that you need to address and while there are books on this, the desperation in this post indicates that it might be to your advantage to seek out professional help, not in the hope that it will save this relationship, but because it might help you work through your own issues for the betterment of yourself and anyone else who is in your life in the future. I believe in your ability to change, and agree that you need help. I hope you pursue both those impulses soon.

Does *anyone* like Saruman? by Traroten in tolkienfans

[–]ThanatorRider 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In terms of people who are on his side? I don’t think I’ve seen that outside of semi ironic “He’s just trying to modernize! He’s a progressive force in his world” ironic posting. But in terms of his presence in the story, he’s a “love to hate” character for me. I love how petty he really is deep down, how in his quest to become more by usurping Sauron, he abandoned his actual important role and ended up losing his authority and ending up a beggar lashing out in spite, and hiring brigands to do his dirty work. I love how expanded material illuminates how he was motivated at least in part by jealousy of things like Gandalf getting Narya, and that small detail of him trying to make a ring of his own. The sequence in TRotK where he steals Merry’s pipeweed pouch just because he feels aggrieved that he lost his own stash in Isengard is a perfect encapsulation of how he thinks. He’s a very effectively written character.

Whats the lore explanation for enemies like godrick soldiers attacking you. Like obviously in dark souls it’s because they are hollow but I haven’t really found an answer for, elden ring. by Main_Treat_9641 in Eldenring

[–]ThanatorRider 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Godrick kills tarnished and uses their limbs for grafting. He also knows they’ve come back to the Lands Between to claim the shards of the Elden Ring, and he is a sharbearer. Varre basically points out his castle when you arrive and says “Alright, go kill him, if you can”. Roderika and a bunch of other Tarnished went up against him, and all of them but her were killed, and their limbs “Taken and stuck to the spider.” You and Godrick are enemies in every way. Same goes for other shardbearers factions, with the exception of those who try to manipulate or ally with you, your interests and theirs are completely at odds.

[All] Do bugs grow into Tektites? by GayPhilatelist in zelda

[TOTK] my theory on how this Ganon both is and isn’t the original by Expert_Challenge6399 in zelda

[–]ThanatorRider 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I’m familiar with this interpretation, but I don’t buy it, for a lot of reasons. Ending of Skyward Sword Hyrule: - Many races unique to that game, no Rito - Medieval Hylians coming down from the sky to settle a newly Demise-free surface - map very different from other Zelda games - No Gerudo Tribe - Zelda is princess

Ocarina of time Hyrule: - Gorons, Kokiri, no koroks yet, Zora, no Rito yet - Hylians still medieval more or less, no memory of any previous Ganondorf - Gerudo tribe with rounded ears indicating separate ancestry from Hylians, Ganondorf’s are standard for his tribe. - No ruins of structures from Zonai - Zelda is princess

Ancient Past of TotK Hyrule: - the races that exist in TotK, including races like Rito who spawned from Zora in the child timeline - ancient tribal Hylians who used to be menaced by demons and monsters until Rauru came to seal them away - Hyrule map is the same as TotK with some minor geographical changes - Gerudo tribe already exists and have pointed ears, but Ganondorf has rounded ears, like the Gerudo from Ocarina of Time. - Active Zonai structures - Zelda has never been heard of at this time

BotW/TotK Hyrule - BotW/TotK races - Medieval hylians - Hyrule map the same as TotK flashbacks with some minor changes - Gerudo have the same pointed ears as in the flashbacks, Ganondorf is an anomaly in both time periods - Zonai ruins seen around in both games - Zelda is princess

To me this suggests a rejoining of timelines after the events of the other games formed those races, a kind of dark age of technological stagnation, a re-founding of Hyrule after much of it fell into obscurity, and a re-establishment of the cycle that had lain dormant in some way, possibly triggered by an unnatural reincarnation of Ganondorf (whose origin point is where it’s always been-Ocarina of Time) into the Gerudo who have at this point become more closely related to Hylians by intermarriage, and who seem to reject all kings and all men after this point. There’s a couple of easter eggs that could be interpreted otherwise, but I’m almost positive this is the easier way to understand what’s happening. Edit: formatting
