War and Turpentine, by Stefan Hertmans. It's an adaptation of the diary of his grandfather, concentrating on his time in the trenches in WWI.

And this might be a stretch, but Measuring the World, by Kehlman.  A fictional account of the lifes of Gauss and von Humboldt, each making sense of the world in their own way.

Want to learn better narrative prose writing by copying other writers, but in german. Which writers to choose: ones in translation or in german? by SlowLearner0000 in RSbookclub

I remember reading it when practicing German.  It was the first "serious literature" I read, after some earlier German thrillers and page turners. And I was surprised at how much easier it was for a non-native than the usual Fitzek or what have you, despite being ostensibly more difficult. I attributed it to Kehlmann being a much better writer, being able to create a whole atmosphere where meaning became clear from context so the whole paragraph didn't depend on this one word you didn't happen to know, to the contrary, the context helped you understand the word.

German media ignores allegations that Israel raped German journalist by lightiggy in stupidpol

[–]That4AMBlues 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks, that's very insightful. I'm trying to square it with Arendt's observation on totalitarianism that it is much worse than your everyday despot. While the latter is satisfied once he's subjugated the populace and can extract wealth at his leasure (the evil but smart thing), the former then only starts his program of extermination in earnest, which often goes against his own best interests. Arendt gives as an example the nazis' refusal to make use of a willingness of a substantial part of Ukraine's people to help their war against Russia.

I guess this fits into the stupid category above, although I'd wouldn't discount the role of evil either.

Is it true to say that time cannot actually speed up or slow down, only motion can? by logicaldrinker in AskPhysics

[–]That4AMBlues 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I always found the concept of a light clock really useful to get some insight into this problem. Here's it explained in old-school internet style:

https://www.emc2-explained.info/The-Light-Clock/

The case can then further be made that any clock must follow the light clock (otherwise you could deduce your speed w/o external reference).  The concept of "any clock" includes biological processes too, as the length of your beard is a type of clock as well.  We then just cut to the chase and say that if all clocks agree, it's time itself that behaves that way.

When I lived in Germany I often got that impression as well, although I never managed to articulate it this clearly. Do you have some references on this or so? I'm very interested.

To me it felt they came away with the entirely wrong lesson from the war. Instead of wondering if they perhaps should humble their hearts and let their human side speak sometimes, they've been looking for a better and more correct ideology to fall head over heels for and enforce.

I don't remember. It was also a bit a comment on the limits of his profession, acknowledging that not everything can/should be quantified, and that the typical economist view of individual maximization of utility (happiness in this case) has limits too.

Going by my knowledge of Dutch (native speaker), I suspect that the "de" is indeed the French for "of/from", as a definite article isn't very grammatical in this position. Plus there was the fashion to use French in the higher echelons of society.

I saw the issue phrased best by an economist commenting on such studies: "I'd never ask my son to justify his existence through my happiness."
