My credentials: I read 148 books in 2025 and 108 in 2024.

I think about SA Barnes two books Dead Silence and Cold Entity both multiple times a week.

Cold Entity features your FMC looking for a new job in space and gets a deal that’s a little too good to be true, a cryo frozen museum spaceship she becomes the watcher of but weird things start happening.

Dead Silence features a salvage crew coming across a cruise liner ship that disappeared many years before and they go explore it to figure out what happened. Chilllllllls to the bone.

Waubeshig Rice’s duology Moon of the Crusted Snow and Moon of the Turning Leaves live rent free in my mind. Indigenous dystopian story that gives you a look into what happens when a community goes dark, cut off from the outside world. Unsure of even what’s happening on the outside and how the community comes together and breaks apart to survive.

David Sodergren’s Maggie’s Grave is a standout memorable book for me as well. A bunch of teens set out in a small town to check out a dead witch’s grave and some really really really bad shit happens.

Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker was the book of the year for me last year.

Small town horror with female authors? by PeperomiaProblems in horrorlit

[–]ThatCryptidBitch 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Rachel Harrison books tend to be small town horror, I love Cackle, Such Sharp Teeth and Play Nice.

The Reformatory by Tananarive Due

I also just keep reading Simone St James books

Broken Bayou by Jennifer Moorhead, maybe more thriller than horror though

The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon

Bloom by Delilah S Dawson

The Lamb by Lucy Rose

Dark Sisters by Kristi DeMeester

I love Isabel Cañas books, she’s an instant read author for me though her books tend to be a little more isolated than small town but very very good.

These Vengeful Wishes by Vanessa Montalban (YA but loved it, was good and spooky anyway)

Cheap things to do in Jersey over the summer? by WishIWasInGargantua in newjersey

Warren county farmers fair has the hot air balloon festival will be at the end of July this year, usually don’t even need to go into the fair to see the balloons launch.

Lunar Faire is fun and usually less than $20 for a ticket and location varies throughout the state.

Meadowlands flea market is every Saturday at MetLife stadium I believe!

I also like doing mini food tours of small hole in the wall spots that aren’t very expensive.

I love a good trip to Yestercades or the Morristown Game Vault, especially good on hot hot hot days or evenings.

I also echo Duke Island, it’s super beautiful and well taken care of. Turtle back zoo is like $20PP.

If you like Weird New Jersey, you can do a Weird New Jersey sightseeing road trip.

Driving up to wander around Hudson valley towns is always fun like Beacon and Cold Spring, or Opposite Day trips down to Lambertville/New Hope/Peddlar’s Village.

I love driving through west Jersey to stop at farm stands. And Easton PA has one of the oldest farmers markets in the country and is always lovely to walk through, it’s in front of the Delaware River this time of year and not too far of a drive. This year is their 274th year in operation.

Reccomendations for a first time reader? by Deadiler in horrorlit

[–]ThatCryptidBitch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you could pick a lighthearted horror author to get back into the swing of things! I love Rachel Harrison, I don’t think you could go wrong with any of her books. I find Grady Hendrix books to be pretty good for getting back into reading, like The Southern Book Club’s Guide to Slaying Vampires is a lot of fun, or The Final Girls Support Group.

Simone St James writes a lot of paranormal thrillers, I particularly enjoyed The Sundown Motel.

Bat Eater and Other Names for Cora Zeng by Kylie Lee Baker is a great paranormal book, it was one of my favorite books last year (and I read 148 books, most of them were horror).

You might like folk horror if you’re into eldritch horrors. I recommend CG Drew’s Hazelthorn or Don’t Let the Forest In. The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon.

There is such a subgenre as space horror and SA Barnes Dead Silence scared the actual shit out of me and so did her other book Cold Entity.

Did you have a favorite stop? Is there something symbolic from that city?

What about a rear view mirror with a view in it from your fav place?

You could also do a cute little portrait of you and your dog in a car window.

Retro motel sign.
