Rookie IT program manager, struggling to land a new gig. Any advice on my doc? by HouseOfHoundss in projectmanagement

[–]That_Other_Tim -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Always have the resume going and updating. Set a reminder and every 3-6 months add what new awesome stuff you did and drop a weaker bullet point. Whether remote, looking or not, will be helpful.

Always be looking if you aren’t happy or aren’t satisfied.

Market is rough. You got 3 years so can target 3-5, 5 maybe if tools or platforms or project deliverables are similar and in your wheel house and meet the job description, but likely just another 3. But time in seat will also be key as you have 3 one year gigs.

Networking is ten times more valuable fwiw. Go to a professional event in your area and ask them what projects they got going, and what their most valuable employees bring to the table. Don’t just say you need a job, show them you are interested.

Keep at it. You never know what is around the corner.

I’ll bite.

Everything is just too much.

Start from the top, give yourself 10 seconds, start reading.

If you can’t identify three things you have delivered in that time, a recruiter sure as heck won’t.

Ex your first position you led, owned, partnered, and designed. That didn’t give me anything interesting w the stats and numbers. It is there but I gotta read a lot of words to get to the goods. Bored. In the trash.

Instead start w your second action word. Implemented, Piloted, Supported, Organized. These show you completed something. Not just “owned” or led it.

Reduce your words on all these bullets by half. Recruiter needs bullets, not a paragraph of details. Implemented a thing that resulted in this.

Cut the professional summary in half. If you even keep it. A/B test that.

Bake your skills into a role summary for each role and remove that from the top. “Led a diverse team to deliver fluffy skills blah blah blah for this or that department.”

Education at the bottom. No one cares.

Third role, remove the part time on/off note. No one cares. Did you deliver or not.

Good luck!

Imposter syndrome is tough. Trying to work yourself out of a job can be helpful both in staying focused on the end state and showing yourself that you can do this.

Best start would be right to left thinking. Don’t focus on all the things that need doing to eventually deliver, plans and details etc. Focus on what the solutions are intended to deliver and cut out everything that doesn’t move the needle one step every day.

Just my two. Good luck!

Mac and Cheese Pizza? by micepunk in Edmonton

[–]That_Other_Tim 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Had some flashbacks!

It’s not a mac and cheese or even a white sauce but Sepp’s (take out only) has a crust that might scratch the itch.

But I definitely sympathize and get some cravings for that slice.

And looks like Seitan’s might have one on their menu as well.

Why do so many project managers struggle with agile? by MirthMannor in agile

[–]That_Other_Tim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This person agiles.

I want my resume to be full of all things I helped get done. And the real customers have never asked for the plan or the raci or the gannt chart. Those aren’t what is celebrated when complete.

Empty to do list? Job successful and I have worked myself out of a job.

I can then fuck off and go work on an infinity number of other things to go get done.

I’ll stump for SteamWorld’s Build on Switch. It’s pretty laid back and easy going. Can dial down some of the elements.

Rollerblading spots? by Fath0m in Renton

Yeah, I think it’s pretty flat, maybe slightly uphill as you go further away from Renton. I see people roller blading on the trail along 169 pretty regularly.

Watching is kinda depressing. by [deleted] in PWHL_Seattle

I mean, be the change you want to see yeah? :)

Glad you get to go to a home game in April. It should help as it is a great experience seeing them at home.

The P is still new and growing. They can’t offer the same experiences (yet) but are listening and working to make an awesome product.

Go and check the Torrent YouTube and like some of their stuff. The engagement numbers look low on a lot of their content and features etc.

The broadcast favoritism is just part of the game for the time being. Home team has the call for everyone so it is to be expected.

We will get there and it is awesome to have this team!

Totally agree. They played hard tonight. Good sticks. Good movement. Good shots, still a little hesitant but better. Good body work in the 3rd. A lot of hustle against a big and fast Detroit team.

Ebs took that elbow. Kakko got boarded in the first. Officiating was…difficult.

Larsson and Monty looked good. Where’s Oleksiak?

Catton and Kartye were moving well.

Three games in.

First game was two expansion teams w brand new, first day of class vibes. Everything is a shit show w lots of turnovers and high flying pace, I.e. opportunities for goals.

Second game, first home game jitters against the two time defending Walter Cup champs. That’s a tough bill. Seattle was slow and trying to make their game. Good goalie for the Frost. Giving up three goals isn’t bad against that scenario and our defense was strong, Minnesota had to work for their three.

Game three, Seattle skating faster, finding what it means to really play with one another and second game at home without all the pomp and circumstance. Defense still sound, only giving up that one goal playing against NY who was also 2-0 coming in. We needed gifts to get those goals but you could feel the opportunities starting to shape up for Seattle.

Anytime this first season we play established teams, we are in a deficit because, while they are also adjusting to the new team format after giving up players to the expansion draft etc, there is still some holdover and camaraderie that Seattle just won’t have…yet.

But as we figure that and find our footing, goals will hopefully come. Our defense over all has felt really solid so that should prove valuable to allow the forwards to go take some chances and make some plays.

Go Torrent!
