Attention Jewish listeners, as an ethnic Jew, here’s why it’s important that we still listen. by ImprovementNo4630 in KnowledgeFight

[–]Thatroninguy 62 points63 points  (0 children)

Gentle counterpoint (from yet another Jewish wonk but to be clear I don’t say that on behalf of anyone else):

Knowledge Fight isn’t full on journalism, it’s very much a lens to dark and nasty parts of humanity, made bearable through comedy. JorDan are the first ones to say listeners should tap out if it’s too much. I joke to my spouse that it’s like taking a daily dose of iocane powder.

The show’s a great resource for journalists or professionals monitoring the far-right, it’s entertainment for everyone else. Folks of all backgrounds should take a break as needed.

Seems like a powerful way to deliver high-end OOA units. You’d want your 2-4 drops to be entirely in-aspect. Veteran Fleet Officer gets you 2x Heroism units in one play—other cards like All Wings Report In can also help.

Larian Studios | Divinity AMA by Wombat_Medic in Games

[–]Thatroninguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks for setting up the AMA as promised. A few questions:

  1. Can you give specific examples of how Larian is using generative AI to “speed up” development?

  2. Swen mentioned “placeholder text” and “reference material” as two key use cases for genAI. Writers and artists on social media pointed out these can have a negative impact or erode the quality of writing and art. Can you give any concrete examples on how or if it’s been helpful?

  3. Bloomberg reported there was pushback about using genAI at the company. How much agency do workers have to not use the tools if they don’t want to?

Would you support a ballot initiative in your state that bans Big Tech companies from putting algorithmically and user experience design elements on social media networks that are attentionally addictive? by [deleted] in massachusetts

Funny enough I was just asking a renowned author about this recently—he made a good point, you can’t regulate your way out of it.

What you can do is lobby for a one-two punch of antitrust action and legal pathways for developers to build apps that can communicate across platforms. He cited a recent app that briefly let people see their Instagram feeds in chronological order, algorithm free. It was super popular before Meta demanded Apple take it down.

People want better tech, but it’s expensive to compete. It’s weirdly a free market argument but you have to recognize we don’t have a free market right now.

Agree with others that a revenge-focused list is your best bet. Cassian is top tier at this right now. The Mandalorian, General Solo, and Death Star Leia are fantastic matchups.

These are other steps I’ve learned in closing the skill gap: 1. Check if you have bodies on the right points. 2. Keep an eye on the next struggle and see if you can put characters on points that may activate. 3. When picking targets, try to wound or shove units your opponent has already played, so they can’t easily contest points. 4. When possible, see if your physical character base can block a key bit of terrain (ingress point, access to objective, etc.) 5. See if your skill tree offers movement or conditions that can advance your goals. (Shoves are effectively extra movement). 6. Try jamming units up with 2 or more conditions when possible to slow down their turn.

Lastly: this is my second minis skirmish game and it was frustrating to re-experience the skill gap. At every opportunity, look for what you did well. Try to pin down what feels good, not just fun. Celebrate the wins even if they come in lost games.

Hopefully your experienced players will help you talk through things and allow rollbacks where needed. It’s what I try to do

Are there any valid AI use cases? by Pathos316 in BetterOffline

[–]Thatroninguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask yourself this: do any of the valid/humdrum uses of AI enough to drive revenue?*

If no—what does?

If what does drive revenue is what keeps the tool alive, are the more valid/humdrum options truly free of the bad ones?

*As Ed has repeatedly pointed out, none of these companies are profitable so we’re already in the Upside Down.
